Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Lads,

I've been dipping in and out of this thread to see whether the S3 is worth upgrading to from the S2.

All phones have teething problems and I used to be happy to be in the vanguard of exploring solutions but nowadays I just want my device to work well and deliver a long battery life.

For those of you who switched from the S2 can you let me know what the big advantages are and do you miss anything about the S2 or have any regrets?

    Ben

The big advantage is the screen and everything has worked great so far on the S3. On the S2 I had lots of little issues with certain emails not syncing properly and calenders.

I prefer the shape (more square) of the S2 but the resolution on the S3 screen is great, webpages etc... are much easier to navigate.

Ah... there's your problem. I'm pretty sure you cannot do native video calling between Android and iOS (S3 to iPhone).

You'll both have to use an app. There are loads of apps that can do this now.
    Skype, Fring, Tango etc.

Have you found a fix for this yet? Happening me too.

Also, I have 2 Digital Clock widgets enabled on my homescreen. I work with a lot of people in the states so keeping track of timezones like this is useful. However, it doesn't seem to update itself properly, see below for discrepancy between the clock in the top right and the other clocks. Any ideas?

Can someone tell me the name of the widget widget above with the plane mode, brightness, gps? I can't remember it.

    Extended Control i think

Is there any launcher that will allow me to set a 5x6 app drawer, not just homescreen?

    Hi all,

My S2 is beginning to give a bit of trouble so have decided to get an S3 today.

Can anyone recommend a Docking station which will charge the phone with a protective case fitted and what case do people recommend?

I'd also like to get a spare battery and battery charger so if there are any recommendations for those I'd appreciate it also. I used Antler spare batteries with my S2 and they were very good but I don't think they are doing S3 batteries yet.

    Ben

Can anyone recommend a good flip case for the S3??

Would love something like this but far too expensive to justify,,,

I got an S3 there on Tuesday and to be honest my biggest gripe is the lack of "normal" ring tones. I just cant hear the silly ones that the have. I have it rooted now with Wanamalite ROM and even with that its the same.

Any idea where I can get a ring - ring tone, I think it was called deskphone on the S2 ??

I know what you mean - I downloaded an app called Nostalgic Phone - It has a whole range of standard "ringing" tones..You should be able to find one that suits there

I couldn't deal with all the new age "Health Spa" sounds that are on the phone as standard...

What about the "official" case - amazon.co.uk. T'is about 20 euros now. Can't believe they wanted 40+ euro for it

I like the idea of the back of the case being the back cover of the phone. It reduces the bulk that a normal case adds. Especially to such a slick looking phone :D

I just want to protect the screen in my pocket (damn keys!), so this looks pretty good to me. Now if only I could find it cheaper somewhere...

Just stuck mine on charge... 3days 9 hrs and 15% battery left. Didn't use it as much as I normally would but ts nice to know that I could potentially get 5+ days standby out of it though. I'd never have got that with the S2.

Genuine flip cases are great, got one for my brother in the vodafone shop( I'm sure they all have them) in Clonmel for €20 and it fits perfectly and is of good build quality. He constantly has this phone In his pocket with keys etc and this cover has kept it pristine. However the tripe Carphone whorehouse were flogging we're cheap eBay like yokes.

my own. no juice defender, no app killer... just been busy in work. standby does very little. i made a bigger comment in a thread on three in biz section.
i estimate it is using 0.5% battery per hour on standby.
using wifi uses maybe 1% per hour.
    using mobile data uses more.
    thats in standby.

    34% left. now running 2 days 3hrs 41 minutes

will post some screens later (1hr time). gonna be needing it tomorrow so will be putting it back on charge before going to bed now.

Looking at those screens something is preventing your phone from going to deep sleep. Looks like the broadcom service. you use your gps a lot ? Could probably turn it off when asleep and save a bit more battery. That's if it is that that's keeping it awake.

Have a quick read of this.

Ok got the GS3 today and first impression is very good. However the blue color on the demo S3 in store was clearly different than the blue one I got. It's more like metallic looking and much lighter blue than the one they had in store.

Does anyone know if they get the Pepple Blue back soon so I can exchange it or is that the only blue from now on? Doesn't look that great to me to be honest.

Maybe I just got unlucky. Anyone knows? They said I can return it in the next 28 days. Maybe it will grow on me but right now it's not a great color.

Folks, how do i put a flight mode widget on my home screen ?

Just got the phone this afternoon, moving from HTC Desire and even though the Desire slowed down in the last couple of months the S3 is lightening fast jumping around, very impressed so far.

Edit: sorted, just downloaded a widget from the store.

    Hi

    How'd you get the update?

I read that Samsung released a new firmware yesterday, but when I check the software update service on the phone it says there's nothing new available.

Does the network (3) I'm on make a difference in terms of rollout?

I posted the links to get the download about six posts up.

Is yours Three branded? If so you have to wait for them to decide to update. You can flash to the genetic UK unbranded firmware through the link in my above post. Very simple to do.

Sound, I'll have a look at that. It's 3 branded alright.

Funny how a manufacturers update has to be released from the network network provider. I'd have thought that Samsung updates would have been independent of 3

I think some people got about 3 updates OTA but for me at least Ive never got any from Sammy or Three.

Also in this last updates case I didn't see Ireland on the release list, only UK

    Hi CM,

I'm currently downloading that firmware update, thanks for the link.

Is there anything I need to do to the phone in the meantime (it'll take about an hour to download)? I've backed up the content to Kies.

I'm new to android, but I've jailbroken an iphone before, so I'm somewhat familiar with what I may have to do to get the new firmware on there. Do you have any links to a step by step guide?

I presume I'll need to root the phone. When I do that, is it easy to get rid of the three branding and the bloatware?

Thanks a million, that seems very straightforward. Good to see it can be done without rooting, I'm not super confident that I really want to mess with it that much.

Only snag now is that I'm using a Mac, so I'll have to try and track down Odin for Mac.

Does flashing as per above have any warranty implications, even without rooting?

I am sorely tempted to jump back to Android after 2 years of iOS but don't want to put up with all of the carrier branding crap they insist on putting on or waiting for their approval on updates (and equally don't want to be forgoing on the warranty if I flash it with stock) :(

Are you on Three mobile CM?

If so does your phone still auto jump back to 3G after it's roamed off?

I'm all for jumping the firmware ship but the last few times have stung me bad with the phone never going back to a 3G cell after it's jumped off it.
Means have to jump into settings EVERY time I wanted to use the data network.... This GS3 is very good at holding on and I dont want to mess that up!

Wonder if anyone on three loaded up the new firmware yet?

If you needed to send the phone back, in some cases at least you would be able to just re load carrier firmware back onto the phone before doing so.
I have read posts in the past of people sending phones back with non carrier firmware and they still get fixed.

I found a version of Odin that works on the Mac (it somehow fools the Mac into thinking it's a PC just to run the .exe file).

I followed the instructions as per CMs link above, but the step that is hanging me is when I plug the phone into the Mac, Odin doesn't show up and Com ID, so when I click on start, nothing happens. Bit of a pisser, cos it looks like a really easy way to get the new firmware. I guess I'll have to find a PC somewhere....

GT raises a good question though....does the new UK firmware have an effect on the way Three deals with data? I'm on Three, and I wouldn't put the new firmware on there if I thought it would stop the back and forward roaming, because where I live is borderline for Three reception and it flicks in and out of Vodafone roaming almost on an ongoing basis.
