    Hi,

Please email us at support@dovado.com and send us some screenshots of what the browser displays.

Also, send us the serial number of the unit. You can find it on the side of the cardboard box it came in, and under the device itself.

    Thanks

This has been resolved. It was a misconfiguration in the setup.

not very technical minded but bare with me. I just ordered one of these routers, i had never even heard of them before and think its a brilliant idea. where i am my bb speeds can vary a huge amunt and my pings would be quite high 250-300ms, i see on the infoferenda website they sell antennas, would they help or solve my problem at all? I see in previous posts about using the y connection. does that improve single with the router??? i know its not a direct question about the router but you guys seem to know what your talking about so i said i would ask, cant wait to have normal broadband when this piece of kit arrives.:D:D:D

The "Y" cable is delivered with modems that actually may require it. Many of the older modems (dongle format such as the Huawei E220) require 0.7A of power, whereas a standard single USB port outputs 0.5A. This is why if you pair 2 USB ports, you can get the full 0.7A and hence improve your overall throughput and possibly signal as well.

Todays stick format modems mostly run on 0.5A, and do not require a Y cable. You won't get anything extra out of that.

However, as far as signal is concerned, we have seen 5-6Mbps on the downlink on signal rates of 20%, so it's not always the signal which is the determining factor, but also the available capacity on the base station you're connected to. In 3G networks, you can peer with several base stations at the same time, but actually connected to one for your voice and data. If you use for instance a directional antenna, you will be able to pretty much force your modem into logging into a different base station which may have more capacity available. 3G is not like ADSL. The entire base station has 7.2Mbps capacity, and everyone's sharing it. In ADSL, every user can get X-amount of Mbps guaranteed. Such is not the case in 3G.

The best thing to do is test, test and test, to see which side of your house gets the best reception in terms of performance, rather than just signal. For that, you will want to use a directional antenna, of course.

What kind of USB modem do you use?

    Cheers

    hi dovado,
thanks for the prompt reply. i am using the huawei e220. so what directional antenna would you recommend. So my speeds are not so much dependant on my signal strength. generally i will only get 3g signal in the upstairs front bedroom. great product support by the way. have you gone to mainstream stores such as carphone warehouse/pc world. i think your product would be very well received.

The folks at Infoferenda have recommended us that this one would be a good match for the Huawei E220 & E270 dongle modems. It already comes with a 10m cable, which is the consumer preference for outdoor setups. A shorter cable would only make your setup more inconvenient to deal with in case you are unable to position the UMR & USB modem near the antenna.

    Dr. Nick,

I'm not an antenna specialist, and I'm sure there are loads of resources available to answer this question.

We have seen people improve their signal strength with the help of all kinds of home-made contraptions, however, sometimes the luxury of time and good handywork come in short supply. More importantly, the knowledge of what is best suited for the environment one wishes to use. Certain antennas we've seen people put together simply do not hold in outdoor environments, let alone deliver improvement.

    Cheers

    Hi there!

Yep, 3.0 is brilliant. I just wonder, is there any way to receive signal via TellStick from another sensor?

My idea is to create simple alarm in my house. So I found something like that - Waveman Wireless PIR Motion Activated Sensor
With this device I can switch lights on if someone will be in coverage. So can I catch this signal with TellStick and send text message via Dovado router?

p.s. If this is not this forum for this question I'm sorry, but mine Swedish is almost that good like mine Chines ;) so I can't really ask on www.telldus.se

The TellStick is a transmitter. It doesn't receive signals, only sends them.

It's great for powering stuff off and on, with the help of a mobile phone.

You can always contact Telldus by email. They're making a new website that'll better suit the international community.

    Thanks

Thanks Dovado, just got the email and have downloaded the firmware.

    One question however.

On my Traffic Useage monitor I seem to have default settings and the dates are set for Jan 2000. How do I change this to the correct dates? And how do you reset if for each month?

Many Thanks for the firmware and great service.

Here is a copy and paste of my page.

    Thanks

    Traffic Usage in megabytes:

    USB-3G: ETH-WAN:

    Downloaded Jan 2000: 36 MB 0 MB
    Uploaded Jan 2000: 0 MB 0 MB
    _______ _______
    Total Jan 2000: 36 MB 0 MB

Downloaded last month: 0 MB 0 MB
Uploaded last month: 0 MB 0 MB
    _______ _______
Total last month: 0 MB 0 MB

These figures are estimations. For more accurate figures - please contact your operator.

The clock is based on NTP (Network Time Protocol) as the UMR itself doesn't have a battery-driven clock. It synchronizes with our server on the internet upon each connection.

It might be that your mobile broadband operator may be blocking NTP requests, however, try restarting the box just in case, and then wait a while in the event that it may take some time before it syncs up. Usually, this is done quite quickly and unnoticed.

Also, while you're at it, check if you're on the right timezone on the SYSTEM->NTP page of your UMR.

Which operator and APN are you using?

    Thanks

I checked my NTP and thats correct.

Once again thanks for the response and speed you do it at!

    Hi,

    You're most certainly welcome.

The APN is the mobile operator's Access Point Name (the main router on their side which your USB modem connects to). You'll find it on the MODEM->MODEM SETTINGS page, where you may have inserted it.

From what we know, Vodafone has two.

"internet" and "hs.vodafone.ie", though I believe the latter one is only for corporate users. Not sure.

If anyone out there has a similar problem on a similar connection, then it's most likely that Vodafone's blocking off the access attempt by the NTP client in your DOVADO UMR.

I am attempting to upgrade the firmware of my Dovado UMR.

The manual includes the following instruction on page 31

" Log in to the configuration pages
from your computer as described in section Configuring the UMR."

I have looked everywhere and can find no section in the manual entitled "Configuring the UMR".

Where are the damn confiiguration pages and how do I log into them, please?

    Hi Dovado et al,

I have upgraded to firmare 3.0 and it looks great. The upload/download tracker and the NTP clock work well however the SMS functionality is not working for me :(

I'm on the 3 network and I have tried with both the sms message center number entered and with leaving it blank. Also I have tried using two different modems - a Huawei 270 and a Huawei E169G

Anybody get the SMS function working on 3?

    Hi,

Are you sure SMS works on your subscription? Have you tried running the USB modem in your PC and sending/receiving a message?

    Could be good to check.

    Thanks

Cannot send SMS messages but can receive messages when directly connected to the PC. According to 3 support they do not support SMS sending but they do allow SMS receiving

So, I assume that you activated the SMS handler first under SMS->SETTINGS, Saved & Restarted the UMR? When you send an SMS to it, your PWR lamp on the front panel of the physical UMR will blink, indicating that there's an unread message. Typically, you shouldn't require a SMS Service Center in there, but in case it doesn't work, you can insert it, which you have tried. Have you checked if it's the same Service Center as that stated in the PC dialer for your USB modem?

Just a quick update.. CONNECT, ReCONNECT and RESTART are working perfectly - when I was trying yesterday I was using STATUS but since 3 don't allow message sending the UMR was trying to send the status message but I couldn't receive it. I dont have a TELLSTICK (not yet anyway) but i'm sure it should work no problem

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,390 ✭✭✭Dr. Nick

Looking back over the thread there were some complaints that SubNet had 'stealth' charges but it now appears to have reduced the price to €109?
    Subtotal: €109.00
    Tax: n/a
    Shipping: n/a
    Basket Total: €109.00

I haven't registered to see if there are further charges after registration.

The Commsoft price is €130 delivered.

Are they selling exactly the same thing?

OUCH! Is that what they said? That's odd.

    I checked here: http://www.three.ie/support/using-3-broadband.htm

Can I send or receive text (SMS) messages using my USB modem?

Yes. Simply open the USB modem connection screen and select the Envelope icon at the bottom. For both Pay Monthly and 3Pay customers, when you send text messages this way, you will be charged a standard rate, or it will be taken out of your allowance if you have a text Add-on. Please note: At the moment, Mac users can only receive SMS (text) messages to their USB modem dashboard if they have the E160G or the E169 modem.
Mac users who have the older Huawei E220 or ZTE MF622 cannot get text messages to their dashboard.

    Hi Dovado,

I installed a UMR last year, with a Huawei E270, on O2 Broadband. I have the latest firmware on both UMR and Huawei. The connection tracker is configured and set to ping a few hosts like Google and Yahoo.

I have two issues, different symptoms, same end result. The UMR is installed in the attic of my father's house and gets minimal usage. 50% of the time when he or I attempt to use it, there is no internet access and the UMR has to be physically power-cycled (not an easy job, given its location).

    Syptom 1:

No internet access. I can login to the UMR web interface, and the modem status page says "Disconnected". I can restart the UMR from the browser, but when it boots up again, the modem status is still "Disconnected". No matter how many times I reset this way, it never reconnects. The only way to restore connection is to pull the power, wait a minute or so, and plug back in. After a power cycle, the UMR boots up normally and connection is restored. This does not seem to be an O2 issue, because it always connects fine immediately after the power cycle.

    Symptom 2:

No internet access. When I connect either a PC, or my laptop, regardless of whether I use wireless lan or a wired port, the result is the same. The wired port shows link up, and the wireless lan connects ok, but DHCP seems to be down. The PC never gets an IP address from the UMR and times out after 30 seconds or so. Of course I can't access the web interface in this situation. However, I have found that if I manually configure an IP address on the PC (in the same range as the UMR itself) then I can actually ping the IP of the device... however the ping response is the only sign of life. I get timeouts when I try to connect to the web interface, or get a DNS lookup against it, or anything else. It is as if the kernel running in the UMR has hung and all it can do is respond to ping... Again, from this situation, a hard power-cycle is the only way to recover.

Both of the above issues appear after a period of inactivity. The UMR might not be used for days at a time. Then when someone attempts to use it, there is a 50-50 chance that it will be found in one of the above states and then they have to wait until the next time I call around and climb the attic ladder. Needless to say, no-one is happy with this situation, least of all me because I recommended this setup and now have to support it.

I have a couple of questions...

first: has the UMR ever been tested for this kind of usage? i.e. left idle for say a week, and then tested?

second: is there any kind of diagnostic information that can be collected somehow, to figure out what is going on? (I asked this before in post #51 on this thread, but never got a reply)

    Thanks

    [ cc'ed to support@dovado.com ]

Has there been any progress with this problem?

I've spent the best part of a day resetting the UMR (hard and soft), plugging in and out the modem, swapping cables, applying the latest firmware etc to no avail. The status on the UMR continually said modem DISCONNECTED and nothing would make it change. The modem light on the modem itself goes through the cycle (green to blue ) indicating that it is connected but the UMR would not recognise its status (the usb light on the UMR would not come on).

This is not the first time that the UMR has acted this way but previously everything "fixed itself" after a couple of power cycles.

Now everything okay again (I've no idea why); 33rd time lucky.

The issue seems to be that the UMR is not receiving (doesn't poll for) the modem status.

Has anyone upgraded to firmware ver 3.0 yet? Notice any performance improvements?

I'm keen to do so but I'd like to hear any feedback from people who have done it already before I risk upsetting everything. Does it erase all APN/Port Forwarding settings etc.?

I'm currently using O2 Huawei E220 with my current 2.1 firmware which works fine.

Whenever you upgrade, the settings remain. Whenever you downgrade, you risk losing your settings.
