Cake is software? They use sheep to make cakes? are they not pies? are they rum babas? are they made by baaakers?

Doesn't say anything about where they are on the SIS (Scrotal Irritation Scale)

I'm not sure how I managed to type that. Clearly I was woolly headed this morning.

It's like buying cake. The difference between Merino wool and regular joe sheeps wool is the same as the difference between Iceland and M&S. They sell the same cake but because M&S are willing to charge a minimum of twice the price, you know it's better. FACT.

All joking aside, there is a real difference. I don't know what accounts for the difference but whereas I'm literally allergic to sheeps wool (not just itching but an immediate skin rash) I can wear merino even for sporting activities. In the deep midwinter I wouldn't go out with my Endura BaaBaa.

just bought these from planet x uk

    1 x FSA Gossamer Chainset 172.5mm 50-34T Include BB €72.91
    1 x Cinelli Spinaci Bar Extensions €14.12

Never tried the Cinelli spinaci bars. they've been band from UCI group race in 1997 and was wondering if anybody has tried them. will be doing more Tri events next year and look a better alternative to full bars

On the subject of SIS, is there a proper way to layer up down below? Only been commuting for two winters now, and they have been relatively mild. I have some padded bib full length, some short padded bibs and some compression type under garments.

It might be obvious, but what should I put on first? I normally use a small amount of chamois cream. When it's cold out I thought I should put on the compression underwear, then the padded bib shorts, followed by whatever layers I need for the upper parts. Is this the correct order?

Off topic......... just use warm/winter weight bib longs and you should be fine for anything here. Look for bibs with 'roubaix' lining as they have a fine fleece-like inner surface

The Spinaci bars are for 26mm handlebars,I think most modern bars are wider than that.

I never knew what I was missing before I ended up buying very good quality merino, the difference was night and day for me. I use merino for commuting every day and it (the good stuff) is brilliant. It may not work for everyone but it works extremely well for me and I practically live in it.

Despite the price of some of it it has worked out to be good value for money too given the amount I use it and how long it lasts (none of my good stuff has failed yet). All of the synthetic kit I used to wear for commuting never lasted long, it remained intact but eventually washing just couldn't eliminate the build-up of odour, plus it tended to irritate my (sensitive) skin at times. Besides, synthetic stuff never worked as well for me either, good merino keeps me warm when its cold yet isn't too warm when temperatures are up, it's my ideal upper body commuting material.

The ethical side is obviously a very personal thing, for me it's very important so I'm willing to pay a bit more to satisfy my conscience. Same reason that I pay more for free range chicken meat and eggs (now there is a topic for heated debate - what does "free range" really mean? :) ). What I've found though is that the highest quality merino (that I've encountered) seems to go hand in hand with strong ethics on the part of the company (ChocolateFish is the prime example of this, for me) - I don't think that's a happy coincidence, good animal welfare seems to yield better quality wool.

As Kurt Kinetic have been selling a revised/improved version of it for a while now, their original Rock and Roll Turbo Trainer is tending to appear on various sites like that one for around the £225 mark.

Good value if "turbo trainer" isn't a dirty phrase for you, you want a trainer that rocks (Kurt Kinetic claim its adds interest during a turbo session, which makes sense to me, and that it makes for a core workout too, a claim I'm more sceptical about), and you don't want/need the improvements offered by the Rock and Roll II (one of which is that it doesn't bounce, which apparently was a significant issue for some people with the older version). That older one also has a bigger footprint and doesn't support as wide a range of wheels, other things to bear in mind if considering it.

The gradual breakdown of friendly relations with my existing Tacx trainer motivated me to buy the old Rock and Roll at that reduced price, it's sitting in my hallway unpacked and unloved so far, I'll post some feedback once my self loathing sinks to a level where I inflict a turbo session on myself again.

Agree, I have some cheap 'wickaway' tops and they don't last long before you have to throw them out.
I also have some expensive Montane merino sports wool tops and after a couple of years of heavy use they're still odourless. Threads are going on them though, so need to re-invest.
What Merino tops are you using?

    Halfords Elite Volare Trainer.

Picked one of these up at that price last year myself, great value and a brilliant trainer. Quiet enough to use at night when the little one is in bed, unlike my old one, w which woke the whole apartment block.

I've had 2 canterbury base layers on the go for 5 years and still in good shape. Used them for football, running and cycling constantly over that period. All depends on the brand

Cantebury were actually what I had in mind to try out next, having read a good few times on here what good quality they are.
If I could get my Montane ones again I would, but they're extremely difficult to order in, whereas Cantebury is easy enough, thanks.

I just got pair of them for €149.98 great value seeing that I needed a pair.

I could suggest that if anyone only needs one then solicit a partner and divide the cost i.e €74.99 each!

PS I'm not an employee of Halfords or will ever be!

None in Galway, just back from there. But they had a similar offer with a can of lube in place of the sponge for the same price. Don't see it on the web but they had other combo's also for €5.00 so worth popping in if your in the area.
