    Weds 9th May, didnt make it to the club session so did my own one on the track in the heath. Did 5 x 800m off 2 mins rest (walking around rest). Times were;

    3'06, 2'56, 2'58, 2'58, 2'54

    This wasnt easy at all (bar the first one where i eased into it) and the HR was fairly high on the second laps. Max was 196 so nearly all out. Goes to show how much fitness i've lost. This will bring me on a mile of course and with Dunshaughlin 10k just over 6 weeks away a pb (37'30) is a very realistic goal there. I know Mcmillan had me on the cusp of sub 36 just 3 months ago but that was then and this is now.

    1 ml w/u and w/d for 4.5 mls total, happy with it overall i guess.

    Thurs 10th May, 3 mls recovery in 28'30 (9'30) Av HR 151. This was a slog and didnt feel great. HR showed that the session took a bit out of me.

    Fri 11th May
    , 7 mls in 55'51 (7'59) Av HR 161, down to Regents Park and back. Felt better today. Tried to keep the pace under 8 min miling and the HR under 165. Not a bad run and felt recovered from weds night.

    Sat 12th May, 3 mls recovery, this was a truly awful run. Set out to do easy pace and felt crappy so eased off. HR hit 199 going up a hill at 9'20 pace, shocking altogether.

    took Sunday off, 21 mls and 5 runs. Not a terrible week overall. Good to return to speedwork. 655.5 mls for the year.

    Mon 14th May, Battersea Park 5km road race.

    43rd in 19'41

    headed down to Battersea Park much later than i should have and the warm up was the run from the train station (not for the first time if i'm honest :rolleyes:) Got to race HQ 6 mins before the 7pm start and got to the start 1 min beforehand.

    Plan was to run about 18'20-18'30, i knew i could forget about a PB or a sub 18. March and April were disasters and i've missed a load of training. I headed out at about 3'40/km pace but i knew from 1k that it wasnt happening today so slowed to 4'00-4'05 pace. Rest of the race was awful, but picked it up last 300m to at least get under 20 and salvage something. Strongly considered dropping out after lap 1 of the 2 lap race and maybe i should have tbh. I achieved nothing by finishing that last night. A far cry from my last Monday eve race. It may be the fastest 5k road race course anywhere (not a metre of climbing) and i'll be back later this summer hopefully :)

    One thing it tells me is i can forget racing until July at the earliest. Gonna go to the doc and get another blood test asap cause i'm not right clearly. Its disappointing cause i've been feeling better in myself and running ok if not spectacularly the last 2-3 weeks.

    I'll still do the cork relay cause thats a bit of fun but i'm out of Dunshaughlin now. Hopefully i'll be back into it by the autumn.

    Don't worry about racing and just get well, if you can get easy runs down just keep it all very easy . Don't be doing anymore races until you see a doc again. The way your going now i'd prob beat you never mind the brother...

    Tues 15th May, 4 mls recovery in the heath in 36'56 (9'14) Av HR 148, legs felt fine all day today, weird. Doesnt feel like i had a race at all. Being 2 mins off my pb might have had something to do with that. Not gonna over analyse it, i'll just chalk it down as a 5k tempo and move on.

    Got a fast blood test today thankfully and i'll keep tipping away doing easy/recovery runs till i get the results. But tbh i feel grand now.

    Weds 16th May, 5 mls easy down to Primrose Hill Park and back in 41'49 (8'22) Av HR 160. Felt fine again. Did 25 mins outdoor core in the heath after. Need to get back into this regularly. The more sunny evenings we have this summer the better in that regard.

    Thurs 17th May, 4 mls recovery in the heath in 35'54 (8'59), Av HR 149. This felt good again. Nice to get under 9 min/miling at that HR.

    Fri 18th May, made it about 2 mins in when the pre rotterdam 2010 coccyx injury flared up again :( Quite sore now but painkillers are helping. Will see how it is in the morning and try an easy one i think.

    Feck, you're having no luck at all at the moment.

    Sat and Sunday were both rest days, pretty painful to get out of chairs/stand up in general. Right bitch of an injury in that regard. Didnt stop me drinking all day Sat though :p

    Mon 21st May
    , paced RK down at the Battersea Park 5k. Finished up in 25'13 (8'04). I headed out at 23'30 5k pace but it wasnt her night. I felt very good myself and maybe i could have raced it but its a bit soon for that i think. Bit of a warm up for 4 mls total.

    Tues 22nd May, headed down to Finsbury Park for the club session (for the first time in months :eek:) Session was 5 x 1200m starting every 6:00. I ended up doing 3 in 4'20, 4'24, 4'27. Before i fell in a heap on the infield. 3.5 mls total with w/u and w/d.

    In fairness it was 26 degrees here and still very hot during the session. I know i dont run well in the heat so i ran ok in the circumstances.

    http://connect.garmin.com/activity/181061439

    Weds 23rd May
    , i felt a cold coming on on Tues and sure enough it was a bad one Weds morn. I tried a run after work but only made it a min or so in before packing it in. Did 20 mins core after in the Lagos like temperatures.

    Thurs 24th May, 6 mls easy in 52'01 (8'40) in the heath. 27 degrees here today and very humid. This run was a bit of a struggle and it was tough to keep the HR down. Av HR 164 but it was 170 a lot of the way.

    http://connect.garmin.com/activity/181660795

    Still i'm happy enough to be tipping away for the moment. No real targets for the minute, just wanna get back running well again.

    3 weeks since i've updated so better grab a cuppa for this one :p

    Fri 25th May, 4 mls easy/steady in 31'51 (7'58), followed by 30 mins outdoor core. 17.5 mls and 4 runs this week.

    brother over so no running till Tues but 2 x 1hr tennis, better than nothing.

    Tues 29th May, 3 mls in 24'30 in the heath after an hour of tennis. Not the greatest of ideas but there you go.

    Weds 30th May, wanted to do a speed session to get the body used to fast running before my relay leg in Cork 5 days later. Did 5 x 800m off 2 mins recovery, times were;

    2'54, 2'58, 2'57, 2'56, 2'55

    http://connect.garmin.com/activity/183840544

    Similar to the session i did a couple of weeks before it. Not too bad but still a bit off where i was. This was a slugfest after the tennis stiffness.

    1/5 mls w/u and 1 ml w/d for 5 mls total.

    Thurs 31st May, only time for 2 mls recovery before Rome Diamond League/after work but better than nothing (9'21 pace)

    May Review, 79.5 mls. Hard to believe but this month was worse than April :(

    Fri June 1st, 5 mls easy in 41'23 (8'17) down to Primrose and back. Not a bad run and 10 days off ahead of me :D

    Sat/Sun, travel home/travel to cork. Not overly bothered about the 2 rest days.

    15 mls and 4 runs for the week.

    Cork Marathon Relay;

    headed down to Cork sunday evening, had a few pints and it was decided i would run the 3rd leg (5.8 mls) I had warned the team i would be the weakest runner on the team, but the mostly flat leg and race day adrenaline might have been enough to get me through.

    I was apprehensive tbh after the 19'41 5k 3 weeks beforehand, i had hoped that was too bad to be true and this would help me forget about it.

    Mithril ran the frst leg and Meno the second. They both ran ok legs and off i went. My garmin didnt start measuring until over 2 mins in which was annoying. I passed 3 teams within half a mile, too fast a start possibly. After 2 mls the pace dropped and i was in big trouble, a couple of lads passed me here and as we hit the bridge over the southern ring road i was at jogging pace :( I tried to re rally along the walkway towards Paric Ui Chaoimh but it wasnt happening, my 3rd mile was 7'30 on the button :rolleyes:, the 4th 7'10.

    I looked behind with about 2 miles to go and saw the leading lady in the full closing in on me slowly but surely (who i beat in Dungarvan over 10 mls 4 months beforehand :rolleyes:) This sprung me into life and i hit about 6'15 pace for the next mile before hitting sub 6 pace the last half mile while passing 2 teams and salvaging something. I handed over to Robinph physically exhausted. Overall in ran the 5.8 mls in 38'26 (6'37) A pathetic run, and i left the team down no question. If it wasnt a relay i would have DNF's no doubt. We ended up with 2'48'00 and tbh i should have been 2/3 mins faster. Good night after though :D

    http://connect.garmin.com/activity/188104470

    Tues, rest/hungover. Weds travel to Oslo :)

    Thurs 7th June, got out for just over 3 mls at 9'09 pace in the local Botanic Gardens in Oslo. Nice park and felt good on the run. Diamond League was cool and its a lovely place, but my god it must be the world's most expensive city. €3 for a mars bar/ €10 for a pint being commonplace

    http://connect.garmin.com/activity/188104460

    Fri, rest. Sat, travel to Poznan :)Sun, Ireland vs Croatia, amazing experience despite the result.

    Weekly total of 10 mls and 2 runs. Wow :p

    Mon 11th June, back to London for the wettest day of the year so far :rolleyes: and got out for 3 mls easy at 8'10 pace, felt super, despite sleeping till 6pm after getting in at 8am and drinking in Poznan till 4am :D

    Tues 12th June, 5 mls easy between Euro 2012 games in 41'59 (8'24), this was a bit of a grind. Understandable given the weekend.

    Weds 13th June, 4 mls easy at 8'40 pace, took it handier. Felt much better.

    What i need now is to be running 6 days a week and 30+ mls consistently, and almost all of it at an easy pace. 3-4 runs a week and the odd session is not gonna get me back to where i was. Not running Dunshaughlin but i will be there. Tbh my next serious race could be the Cabbage Patch 10 mile in October, with the odd battersea 5k thrown in as a tester. This summer is too busy for serious training anyway.

    Dont forget that 4x1 mile relay :D

    You're fatigued, you need to rebuild the body before you can start building training.

    It's 3 x 1 ml actually. I think Chinguetti has handball tickets that night or something. No olympic accomodation for him if he doesnt run with us though :p

    Surely i wouldnt be the slowest on the team there, but i wouldnt bet on it.

    I think so yeah. 2 months of easy running until the olympics is over then get back into it properly. I do feel grand again though which is th emost important bit. I reckon i've lost most of my fitness though.

    Is it on a track? Surely you'd run faster than me at least? Though who knows maybe I'll be in the shape to smash my mile PB based on my strength and gym work. It's a pretty soft PB.

    Any idea if there'd be a 400m race on in London while I'm there? I contacted the AAI and they were of zero help whatsoever! :rolleyes:

    It's a road relay in Battersea Park, flat as a pancake.

    No sign of any races during the olympics here or here. I'll see if there is any club meets around then though.

    Handball tickets for that night i do have.

    I was at handball at the Athens Olympics, it was pretty decent. We got 2 tickets for €15 that day, what chances a repeat of that in London :D

    Fri 15th June, 5 mls easy in 40'46 (8'09) before the england vs sweden game. Nice run but a little hungover from the irish bar thursday night :p

    Sat 16th June, 4 mls easy in the heath in 34'00 (8'30) Bit of a hilly run which made it tough in parts but ok overall.

    As i was doing my warm down stretches in the heath, i was lucky enough to see a red arrows flyover. Holy sh!t it's an impressive sight. They must have been practicing for the olympics.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,049 ✭✭✭Brianderunner

    Last week ended on Saturday for me, felt like i needed the rest day yesterday. So 21 mls for the week and 5 runs. Not the worst but it will need to improve slowly but surely.

    Mon 18th Jun, 4 mls in 33'00 in the heath (8'15) This run was ok, bit slow to get going. Was gonna do/strides/core but i have a match to watch in the irish bar :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,049 ✭✭✭Brianderunner

    Tues 19th June, 3 mls recovery in 27'46 felt grand despite the pints with Vagga the previous night.

    Weds 20th June, club session in the heath. Session was 4 x 1km ish on hills, basically the rep was all flat/uphill and the downhill was the recovery (cruel)

    My times were; 4'35, 4'55 :confused:, 4'30. Most of the other lads were doing about 4'10-4'20 and i found myself in a secondary group of 3 or 4 of us. This was tough, hills really find you out if your short of fitness but good to get back running with the lads again. 1.5 mls w/u and ml w/d for 5 total.

    http://connect.garmin.com/dashboard?cid=17756770

    rest thurs, wasnt feeling great.

    Fri 22nd June, 4 mls easy at lunchtime in the heath in 31'12 (7'48) felt good going a little faster. fly to dub later.

    Sat 23rd June, met Meno in phoenix park for 10 mls on the slow side of easy at 8'53 pace. Nice route which took in Farmleigh (where i drank out of a hosepipe) :D and the memorial gardens. Legs felt a bit heavoy at the end, shock to the system.

    Headed out to Dunshaughlin later that evening to spectate, something which is happening all too often these days :mad:, good to meet up woth a few people though (and eat a load of free food :D)

    headed to Cork sunday and flew back from there yesterday evening. plenty of pints but no running.

    26 mls for the week and 5 runs, a bit better.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,049 ✭✭✭Brianderunner

    Tues 26th June, club session with the club in Finsbury park. Session was;

    400, 500, 600, 900, 900, 600, 500, 400, 400, 400. Starting every 4:20.

    I did as far as the second 500m and my times were;

    400m - 82 secs
    500m - 1'38
    600m - 1'59
    900m - 3'08
    900m - 3'18 (died a death here)
    600m - 2'06
    500m - 1'42

    http://connect.garmin.com/activity/193127483

    called it a day here as i was shattered. The shortened recovery for the 2nd 900m caught me out. Overall though i was quite happy with the session. Almost feel like i'm making progress. Long way to go still though.

    with w/u and w/d it was 4 mls total.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,049 ✭✭✭Brianderunner

    Weds 27th June, 3.5 mls recovery in 30'01 (9'12) in the heath. Lovely evening but felt stiff from the session.

    Thurs 28th June, 5 mls easy in 41'14 (8'15), 27 degrees and humid but got through it ok.

    Definitely something in the air at the moment, feels like i'm making some gains at long last.

    Update;

    About a week after my last post the virus came back and reared its ugly head. Flattened me for about 2 weeks. Got over it in time for the olympics (which were amazing, 4 nights of athletics and Katie Gold), which is just as well, but it came back again last week after i tried a short jog. Doctor again this Friday and another blood test for sure. Chances are i won't know what it is but at least i'll know what it isnt if that makes sense.

    At home in Limerick early next week and then to the athletics in Zurich so may visit a specialist in Limerick my bro uses to see if he can help. Probably past the point of caring at the mo, it's 5 months since the initial one which caused me to miss London :(

    New York is gone, 2012 is gone too tbh. I doubt i'll be able to run London next April either. At least now i know the one thing worse than an injury. If i can get back to running regularly again in the next 6 months i'll be happy.

    To be honest it's nice to get a break from running, it's all i've done since aged 8. Really lets you know how much marathon training is tunnel vision, when you're in the midst of it, its a huge part of your life, but when you're out of it, it matters little in the real world.

    Haha, just spotted this. Oslo is extremely expensive for everything, not just junk food and booze. It has an extremely high cost of living (probably the most expensive city in the world). Nothing to do with a vendetta against people who enjoy a pint or two.
