yet posts were still spoiler tagged after it aired:p

Most people probably watch it online and not on US TV. Personally I dont even know when it airs in the US I just catch it onlin when I notice its up, I just seen someone say it was leaked so I added spoilers so as not to ruin it for people if it hadnt aired. One other person of all but 2 posts on the site also added spoilers in response to what I said.

Damned if ya do and damned if ya dont on here I think, let slip something and ya have people whinging, ya try not to let something slip and ya have people whinging.

People complaining about the new Spartacus,I think he is alright, does the job. Its the new navia that has actually bugged me more. She is bloody shocking! Can't act to save her life. Everytime she was trying to look scared and crying, she just had this stupid ugly expression on her face. Not that its majorily important, but she is also no where near as good looking as the original actress!

However it was mostly her acting, that recasting has actually bugged me way more than Spartacus.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,780 ✭✭✭✭Galwayguy35

It feels like the new spartacus is trying too much to be like Andy Whitfield playing Spartacus so it feels all hammed up. He is too small to be honest. Everyone seems huge compared to him.

In fairness i dont think any of the actors are as bulked up as they were in the last series. Crixus doesnt look fully as big as he was before either.

Before all they did was train and fight, now they are on the run so that regime is out the window.

Yeh Liam is definitely more in keeping with the Kirk Douglas era sized Spartacus, fit but not exactly ripped.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,805 ✭✭✭FortuneChip

Just wow! I'd go as far as to say that's the best episode since Spartacus brought the rain!

Given the explosive start, I thought the episode would dwindle when I saw the text "One Day Earlier". Yawn, some nonsense about how they got to be there or whatever.
Not the case at all. It was near unrelenting from start to finish, and what a finish. Explosive is an understatement.

    Bravo Spartacus. Bravo

Yup, got to agree with that. It was one of the better fight sequences they've done imo

Well.....that was suitably epic. Best episode this season. You can tell they spent a good chunk of their budget on that.

Glaber is so evil. Great stuff. :D

No more Arena. Alas, by Jupiter's cock I shall miss it so. :p

    Brilliant episode. Wow!
The fighting was well executed (no pun intended).

Its gotta be more fun from here on in! LOL
Rome will suddenly I think, kick things up a bit now!

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,391 ✭✭✭PhiloCypher

Shows starting to kick into gear now in the same manner it did in it's first year, a few so so episodes then really kicking on from about episode 4 on(the pit episode of B&S).

Absolutely brilliant episode. Love the pace of the show, anyone else would have dragged out those last 5 episodes into a full series.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,878 ✭✭✭Burkatron

Pure brilliant! Everything about this episode was class!!
Gannicus back is just going to = more awesome :D

Absolutely excellent episode, now that was Spartacus of old.

Glaber is finally turning into a proper villain, the final scene with him and Ilithyia was brilliant.

The only complaint I have is the way they brought back Gannicus, felt it was a bit weak.

Hopefully the series will continue on in this vein.

I agree it was , it should have gone more like this imo -

Having heard of the fall of the house of Batiatus Gannicus makes his way back to Capua to see what has become of his old friend Oenomaus only to find that he is to be sacrificed in the arena , hearing this a world weary Gannicus decides while a lone rescue attempt is doomed to failure he can at least die defending his friends, to this end he presents himself to the magistrate as the author of their very destruction thus putting him in a position to switch sides and do exactly that.

Another change I might have made would be
to have had Oenomaus throw the spear instead of Spartacus, as some of you may or may not recall in the Kirk Douglas film a Nubian makes attempt on Crassus life with a spear throw and is subsequently killed attempting to scale the pulmanis , being that Peter Mensah has been cast in next seasons Trueblood I feel it would have been a fitting send off and call back to the film if he had died in just such an attempt.

First episode that i felt the new Spartacus felt right ! was epic from start to finish.

He still stood out at times for me. The lines and the fighting choreography were just so good that it covered up for his lack of acting ability I think. It was really apparent when he gave the little speech at the temple. Lines were brilliant and he delivered it well (he has a good voice for that kind of thing) but his face when he stopped talking just struck me as being very amateurish or something.

I do think he was a lot better in this episode all in all but I'm still not convinced by him. The gender equality squad must be in full swing at the studios too crow barring Mira into whatever is happening.

yeah, now the sh1t is gonna kick off, very like season 1 some good episodes to get us in and then rack it up a notch or two, i really loved that they destroyed the arena, and god know how many citizens with it,

illithia is ****ed now, when he dropped that bean on her father i had a really big smile on my face, i just despise that woman, but love her at the same time, :D

No doubt that the best part was the arena action, 5 out of 5, awesome episode.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,988 ✭✭✭constitutionus

that was the dogs bollocks !

    :)

really really ramped up the pathos and the action. the areana stuff was just fantastic.

glabbers turning out to be a great bad guy !

"epic" sums this episode up prefectly.

Another big uptick in the ratings this week, seems the ratings agree with the opinion ep. 5 was awesome: http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2012/02/27/friday-cable-ratings-gold-rush-bering-sea-gold-stay-on-top-spartacus-vengeance-merlin-smackdown-more/122113/

Definitely the best episode so far.

Glaber is such an excellent villain, he makes ya want to hate him so much while pitying him at the same time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,081 ✭✭✭ziedth

I caught this episode last night and it's definately back to it's best. I agree that I think Gannicus should have had a better reason to come back into it such as vain attempt at escape.

I'm loving Glaber as a baddie now, i thought they had made him a bit of a tool this season but the scene with Ilithia (spelling?) at the end was brilliant.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 16,287 Mod ✭✭✭✭quickbeam

Am I the only one that was feeling a bit sorry for Glaber in the middle of this episode? He seemed powerless to stop Illythia leaving him. I so cheered at the end when he killed her father and was back on top again. I think Illythia's number will be up soon. He'll keep her on a tight leesh until she has the baby then she'll have an "accident", I think.

Lucretia won't be happy at Ashur's change of plan. He was meant to swap the vial so that the baby surviving was an act of the gods, instead of Glaber finding out. It'll be interesting to see how that'll play out.

Great to see Gannicus back again.

I cheered to see that guy get stabbed by the spear (I can't remember his name - the pervert guy from Gods of the Arena). Definitely just desserts there.

I am liking Liam's Spartacus a bit better, but still not won over by the new Naevia. It'll be interesting to see how she and Crixus are together when they finally meet properly.

I'm liking all the nods this season to the prequel season. I wonder how different this season would have been if the prequel was never needed as originally intended.

Overall, great episode. I cheered out loud on several occasions throughout. Really gripping and hope the same momentum carries through to the end.

I am back from the Sky pace thread since it was just me talking to myself. As I said earlier there isn't enough interest to fuel 2 threads

Home n Away for ex pornstars :P

I have but one criticism of the episode -
the cgi for the stadium collapsing sucked donkey balls - especially the second collapse where the people falling looked ridiculously fake.

Oh now....I must sit down for a minute...I'm all tired from the extra effort required to use the spoiler tags....

Phew regained my breath. As to new Spartacus - I think he is really growing into it. He makes a good speech and he is great in the fight scenes - there is something really wolf like about him. He does a great job of looking like a man possessed by the gods

Is there a law against doing 2 shows at once ?

I wonder though - how many seasons will there be ? I can't see it going beyond a fourth season - can you ?

i dont see why he cant, as long as they film at different times of the year, spartacus id say would take probably anwhere between 3-6 months to shoot, so that would leave at least half a year for him to shoot other stuff,

i always though maybe 5 seasons of 12 episodes, a nice 50 episodes should tell a good story, (i wouldnt include the prequel in the 50 TBH)

well the show is called spartacus, so hes the main caracter, but the show is more an ensemble cast, there a lot to get through in the show so spartacus sometimes isnt front and center in the show, but he is the driving force behind whats happening in the show, he convinced everyone to rebel, so without him thered be no show,

So will Gannicus follow him like the others? He doesn't seem the following type, should be interesting

Pretty weak compared to the last one, Glaber turning into Batiatus is great. Really bringing that part of the show back to the standard of the first two series. Ashur and his gang of thugs adding a much need bit of brutality back into the show. Didnt recognise him without the beard at first, looked a bit odd.

The new Spartacus has had enough time to do his job now and he hasnt. He's a dud who cant act or fight as far as I'm concerned. Once again made worse a lot of the time by Mira being crow barred into the thick of whatever is happening.

Everything that happened in the rebel camp seemed forced or something. Even the fight scene with Gannicus was poor. Spartacus has lost all appeal in this series and other than Agron, Crixus, Agrons new boyfriend and the women we know nobody else in the rebel camp. All the recognisable faces are gone which is rather disappointing. Ashur's new gang is 20 minutes old, not one of them have said a word and they already better characters than the rebels.

To be honest if the show was changed to be more about Glaber and Ashur trying to find Spartacus I think it would be better than the way it is now.

I'm really not seeing people's problem with the new spartacus. It was never a role that needed amazing acting. In fact I don't think Andy Whitfield was so amazing, and I know that seems bad since he has died, but really it was never such a challenging role.

The new guy has done grand,it has been very entertaining as this show only claims to be,lets face it, its was always about blood and sex to claim thrills. Yet this season has been good, the attack on the arena was great, hopefully they will show attack on the ports as mentioned.

Like I said before, the re casting of Navia has had a bigger impact than that of spartacus. she is rubbish.

I wasnt a fan of Whitfield to begin with but he made the character his own and by the end of the first series I really liked him. I think he was a decent actor and I think any lead role requires a certain level of ability. Perhaps Liam would have grown into the role as Andy did if the character could be moulded to suit his attributes but it didnt work out like that. Liam had to portray Andy's Spartacus and he's much to weak an actor to pull it off.

I'd be a bit kinder on the new Naevia after the last episode, she hasnt really got much to work with in the way of lines and the original Naevia always had a bit of a face on her anyway. I think she might come good in the upcoming episodes if she's given the opportunity. Just as long as they dont take the lazy option and try turn her into a Gladiatoress like they are doing with Mira.

I've should know but I don't, character overload

Glaber and the young looking guy, I think he's some sort of politican could not come to an agreement.
So Glaber sent Asher's new gang around to sort out him and his household

Sorry but who is he? Some official and political appointee from Rome who oversees Glabers efforts in the manhunt?

    Thanks

I'm growing to like Liam's Spartacus more in these last few episodes. He's not got a particularly strong presence but it's been building up a little.

Far more fun though are the bad guys. Ascher is in great theatrical form in this episode - he does a manic grin so very well. Running around recruiting a bunch of utter lunatics!
And Glaber is now stepping up in the villain role in a much better way. He's cast aside the boring political again and decided to go as being that bit more menacing.
In fact for the first time I felt that the two of them together made up for the lack of Batiatus.

Young guy is Seppius, I'm not 100% clear on it but I think he's a Roman of status from Capua who has quite a big private army under his control. Glaber was sent from Rome to sort out Spartacus but doesnt have enough soldiers to take him on. He wanted Seppius to join forces with him to send enough men out to put an end to Spartacus.

But Seppius is an arrogant little shít and thinks he can catch Spartacus himself, make a show Glaber who he doesnt like and gain favour in Rome. So Glaber lets Ashur put together a gang of scourges and send them over for a visit to inform Seppius that he is no longer required. I assume Glaber will now put the moves on the sister, gain control of the private army and continue on his business.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,395 ✭✭✭✭mikemac1

When Glabur and his officer were discussing the soldiers deserting I was expecting them to drag a few captured soliders in and give them some gruesome end as an example to others.

Or maybe decimation, they are at the house of Batiatus so every tenth solider thrown off the cliff

It didn't happen anyway, ah well and was just my immediate reaction when they talked about desertion.
Sure Batiatus beheaded a guard who lost a key and tried to cover it up so the powerful men think nothing of deadly discipline

Ya never know, Glaber might do it to his troops when Spartacus kicks their ass by Vesuvius

Liam McIntyre is slowly getting better but he's never going to have the screen presence that Whitfield managed by the end of Blood & Sand. It's not a role that needs great acting but it does need to be able to carry off the 'I command hundreds of men and am a general badass' side of things.

The new Naevia is atrocious, I know acting is not this series' strong point but she is woeful, and the guy that Agron is in to, who's name escapes me at the moment, makes almost no attempt to hide his Kiwi accent :)
