The picture of the USI guy in the OP's link looks like someone who's being arrested for bing drinking.

But you do agree that the terms are still derogatory, even in a friendly context?

Originally yes maybe. But I am strong believer in words like that having the meaning they are used to have. If I call my best friend affectionately using what you would call a derogatory term, it is not insulting. The point I am making really is that the intention behind the use of a word has massive implications on whether that word is actually insulting/derogatory/offensive.

Words are a lot more fluid than a reading of a dictionary or book on etymology would suggest. Context and intent change words much more... and increase their range far beyond... anything a dictionary would tell you about them.

I do not mean it as a point of disagreement, but just as an answer to the question "Why would anyone want to be referred to as an insulting word?". The reason is that in groups and friends often do, and their reasons for it are many. I could think of lots and list them all but it would just be boring. One random one is as a status symbol of saying "Look, me and this person are so close that I can use words like this and its ok".

The reference to black people using the word that even the forum auto blanks out on me is a good example. Its a status and territorial use saying "I can say this about my friend, but you cant, because this person is in my in group".

You probably meant your question rhetorically, but I chose to answer it anyway :)

A slut is simply a woman who sleeps around with lots of men without requiring anything else in return. They do nothing wrong. A lot of women judge and criticise sluts because sluts reduce the power potential girlfriends/wives have over men by reducing the market price for sex.
You have a very strange POV. What are you on about ''the market price for sex''? AFAIK, the word 'slut' is a particularly offensive term for prostitutes. Some people apply it to women who sleep around (still others apply it to all women) to shame them. OP, do you call men who sleep around without requiring anything else in return sluts as well?

I don't think there is anything wrong with men or women sleeping around.

IME women are one's who do the nasty slut calling. Men are only really bothered by sluts if it is their girlfriend or wife.

The market price for sex is the ability to enter into a relationship with a man where you get a degree of control over him. A woman can order him to clean up and have the house as she wishes it rather than how he wishes it to be for example. When women are going around giving it away for free that isn't so good for the women who get power over men for sex.

again, you have a very strange POV. It seems you see men as the dogs of the relationship while their female overlords bark (excuse the pun ;)) orders at them and reward them with little sex treats. Any person (male or female) who allows themselves to be treated like that needs to build up some self-respect.
I'm fair sure slut means prostitute, not woman who sleeps around. Dictionary.com agrees

I largely agree with your post, but it should be pointed out that it also means an immoral or impure woman

A slut has sex for free so isn't a prostitute.

    A whore is a prostitute.

I do think that's how a lot of relationships are, well not as extreme as the above.

From the dictionary definition, a slut = a prostitute, not a woman who has sex 'for free'.
I pity you if that's been your experience of relationships and hope you'll experience some better ones. That's really not how it's meant to be.

Like it or not, a small percentage will become escorts/prostitutes. It DOES happen, whether you believe it or not. Irish girls have been documented to have worked/be working in brothels abroad too. It may be a very small amount, but it does happen.
I'd say there's probably been an increase in the number of late twenties/early thirties prostitutes claiming they are college girls, if that's any good to you.
If (as is documented fact), English students become prostitutes, why would it be crazy to imagine that a small amount of Irish girls would. Particularly those having difficulty with fees (postgrads, people not eligible for free fees etc).
There's more than a stretch of water between them and us, as the Big Fella put it.

What I'm saying is not that some young women don't turn to prostitution, of course they do, but rather that visions of droves of female students lining up outside brothels is someone's grimy little wet dream, if not simply an attempt to drum up traffic for a "sugar daddy" website.

Just think about this for a second. I am saying that from time-to-time there will be some students that do this. I am not saying it is widespread. I am not saying that there will be that many. Some might not even consider themselves escorts or prostitutes. But there will be a tiny percentage that will sell sex for money.

I never said that droves did this. I didn't say that the website was correct. The way it presents things is clearly nonsense. I was responding to your post that called the notion of Irish girls selling sex as bollocks. You said that anybody that believes it is out of touch with reality. My post saying that some can and do sell sex is not me agreeing with the link in the OP. It is me saying exactly what I have just said.

As for us and the UK, little one-liners like that will not change things. They are not that different.

OK so aside from picking one line out of my post instead of actually using the whole of it. What did you mean when you said this?

So did I imagine that post when you said this? You then followed it up with this:

It reminds me of one genius who was warbling on about young Irish women going to work in German brothels, presumably based on his analysis of the economic crisis and whatever theory of how war should work he gleaned from the pages of Hustler.

Its true, there is no rage like nerd rage.

Do have the courtesy to all contributors to figure out whats going on before you leap in halfway through a conversation, dander aflap like the jowls on a politician strapped to a JCB, like a good man. Better for the blood pressure and all that.

A prostitute will sleep with anyone.
A slut will sleep with anyone - except you...

It's not nerd rage, it's called being able to read. You are the one posting snide remarks about me needing to clean my glasses and calling me a nerd. When all I have done is reply to your posts and point out the blatant lie you just said. You clearly said it was bollocks and it was not the first time you said so in this thread.

So perhaps it is you in need of some relaxation. Maybe go to the student residences in UCD, I hear the girls there will help you relax if you bring a few 50s in your pocket.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,872 ✭✭✭strobe

In my experience the best definition of the word is "Any girl who has/enjoys sex more than a given self-righteous overly-opinionated man deems appropriate for her when it is in fact none of his business".

Another workable definition would be "Any girl who shows as much interest in having sex as guys do, because girls are not meant to enjoy/have it as much as guys in this 'guys are studs, girls are sluts' world".

You missed out "A word used in bitterness by girls who are jealous of the fact that a more attractive girl gets far more attention from men than they do."

Which is the most common usage by far I have encountered on my travels, personally...

If someone with the patience to have actually followed the thread would be so kind as to illuminate the good poster, I have neither the humour to polish Parker's befuddled bifocals nor the temper to put up with his dawn handbaggery.

I have read all your posts on this thread. I have also read all of this thread since it began. Notice all the "thanks from Parker Kent" under certain posts throughout? This was your first post in the thread:

    Bollocks.

This is either some website trying to drum up traffic or some deviant yanking the chimp off himself at the thought.

    Maybe a little of both.

Notice the first word you used?

I agree the website has published a stupid story. At no point have I said the story in the OP is true. As I have said numerous times, the article in the OP is completely exaggerated. Nonetheless my point remains, there will be a small percentage of girls in college in Ireland that will sell sex for money. You have said that anybody that believes that has lost touch with reality. To use your favourite word, that is bollocks.

Your faux over-articulation just looks ridiculous btw.

That's my real over-articulation, lad. It doesn't appear to me that there is any substantial disagreement between us, merely a deficit in communication.

You do realise what I mean by faux over-articulation? If so, I'm not sure why you would say that. Anyway....

The communication deficit is not on my part. If you read what is actually written on the thread instead of idiotic jibes about glasses and nerds, I wouldn't have to continually show you why I said what I said and re-state your own posts.

Faux, French for false. Over-articulation, I'm guessing that is in reference to verbiage which being one of the few blessings of our exalted status as sentient creatures is our privilege to indulge in, unless of course one aspires instead to the condition of the wordless beast, content or at best constrained to express its full gamut of emotion with a glistening eye and a raised paw.

Maybe indeed, but that has not been my experience and as my post said I was only defining it from the point of view of my experience :)

Clearly however what we are both getting at is that it is essentially a term without any actual workable meaning. It is just a term to make the speaker feel better about themselves by demeaning another. It says very little about the actual target of the word, and quite a lot about the actual user of the word.

Girls were doing this in UL as escorts even during the boom years FYI. When you're spending all your money on a car, clothes, booze and nights out it doesn't come cheap and banging some wealthy dude is easier than doing any actual work.

it's been answered already. People (both men and women) call women sluts to shame them. As strobe pointed out, often women call other women sluts out of jealousy and bitterness. As stoneill pointed out, men often call women sluts out of sour grapes and bitterness caused by rejection. And there's always a few stone-agers who think women should guard their virginity like a sacred chalice

I know a 19 year old girl who pays for her uni by sleeping with dirty old men for €100 a time. She seems so innocent too!
