IMO Zelensky and his people would swallow all of that if they could get a proper security guarantee out of the deal.
That's the thing. If there's any kind of serious element to Trump's stance on China, they'll need European support which will not be forthcoming in the event of a US-backed Russian takeover of Ukraine. Trump has talked about China before but he needs them to make his tat so I doubt he's too serious about armed intervention over Taiwan.

It's not thanks to Trump they are talking about peace. How is could be de-escalated has been discussed from day one. Just Putin wouldn't back down and neither would the Ukraine.
What Trump has done is switched sides, abandoned his allies and wants to rob Ukraine while throwing them under a bus.
He's giving Putin everything he wants at Ukraines expense and the expense of Europes security.
That's not peace thats capitulation and betrayal. It destabilises Europe. That's not peace either.
Next time the US looks for allies to legitimise it's ambitions it might be lonely.

The situation has indeed changed, but the principle of it hasn't. These are the GOP, they don't have principles. So one by one that has dwindled right down. I wouldn't trust them for anything now, apart from a few "hold-outs", they are pretty much captured by MAGA.

We all noticed how you implied it was NATO's fault that Ukraine was invaded. You can come out with the ideal world park but let's remember appeasement of Germany enabled Nazi Germany to grow as a threat. Russia pose a similar threat.

The stark reality is the US has only delivered a tenth of the supplies it promised Ukraine yet Ukraine's self arming capabilities are growing everyday. Russian gains are happening at an unsustainable attrition rate for Russian troops.

Whereas Ukraine have integrated drones as a front line infantry weapon, a long way from the drones that the US used in Afghanistan that were piloted from a warehouse outside Las Vegas that were reliant on imperfect information relayed by unreliable actors in a theatre of war that was essentially a man hunt for a Saudi with little regard to Afghanistan.

In an ideal world we'd all like Russia to pull out of eastern Ukraine, Crimea etc, just as Israel should pull out of all the lands they have illegally occupied since 1967 BUT regrettably we do not live in an ideal world.
The stark reality is that Trump/USA have turned their backs on Ukraine, Europe lack the firepower or backbone to push back Putin's army - there isn't even an EU army with one commander in chief so to speak. So Ukraine today is in a limbo situation they have to consider whether to keep fighting an unwinnable war and all it's consequences or sign a very unfavorable peace treaty that will mean loosing up to 20% of their country and billions worth of their natural resources.
I would not like to be in Zelenskyy shoes right now - no peace treaty that he may sign will be favorable to him, his country or it's people. Sadly as we have seen in Gaza might is right and one man's war criminal is another's man's hero ( Think Binen kissing Nethanyahu on both cheeks when he visited the White House just days after being charged as a war criminal by the International Court of Justice Netanyhau) - such is the world we live in today - but it's yet another inconvenient truth to some!

there are plenty taking daily pot shots - be it in schools, shopping malls, on the street or wherever. Such actions are mainly due to disgruntled aAMERICANS who were slighted at some stage during their lives. Nobody is exempt from being ‘potshotted at’. There are LOaDS of precidences. So, at least some members of the current admin - from the top down need to be VERY CAREFUL as a lot of toes are being walked on at the moment

During the first lockdowns it certainly felt like there could a serious standoff at some state capital which could morph into something more serious, then the Capitol riot kind of lanced that boil, but Trump is ramping it up again.
So to add to your post I think there's not much that European Nato members could do to help in the event of a widespread US social meltdown. For what it's worth I have relatives in the US who mused about leaving during his first term, now they're seriously considering it.

As an aside but related to above Professor Jeffrey Sachs addressed the European Parliament just last week, I'm unable to provide a link here but it's available on you tube. His perspective on the Ukrainian war, on NATO's expansionism in eastern Eurpoe etc. is to say the least very interesting indeed and worth listening to.

It's interesting to note that French president Macron suggested in Washington today that a Ukraine truce could be just weeks away - Like him or loath him but thanks to Trump, Europe are for the first time talking about peace talks / cessation of hostilities in Ukraine. If Biden was still in power the words peace, truce etc would not be mentioned or considered - just more and more billions of Us $ being pumped into a pointless war that is just a stalemate with thousands of young men on all sides being sent to an early grave. (Ditto Gaza)
But it goes without saying that Ukraine will pay a high price for peace as they are currently paying for war, as the US is no longer supporting them militarily or otherwise they are in a no win situation. It could be argued that the world's super powers are dividing up the spoils of war between them - this may not end well as the Ukrainians are a proud and fearless people so a long drawn out gorilla war along the new drawn eastern border may be on the cards even if a UN peace keeping force is on the ground there.
Zelenskyy is, for the first time since the invasion, on a sticky wicket. If he agrees and signs unfavorable peace terms as dictated by Trump & co. he'll be a dead man walking politically speaking. On the other hand if he refuses to make peace and commits his people to years and years of an unwinnable war ………… his future looks bleak indeed.
