So 2 cables became unavailable over the weekend, Finland - Germany and Lithuania - Sweden, and the general consensus here is that it must've been the Ukraine? I'm confused. Why would a country busy repelling invaders busy themselves with sabotage of cables between their supporters and in seas they have no access to? Is there any evidence to suggest that the Ukrainians have destroyed anyone's property other than (deservedly) in Russia?

I don't know whether this is serious but Ukraine doesn't have ICBM's
Ukraine already uses it's own home-made missiles (and long range drones) for attacking targets in Russia. The only difference now is that they can use US supplied missiles (they actually don't have too many of them) to hit military targets inside Russia.
Won't make a huge difference to the war, but Putin hates it because it causes him a headache, e.g. the airports and launch platforms in Russia that are used to kill Ukrainian men, women and children on a daily basis might be under threat.
In case you are missing the context there, Russia fires long range missiles all across Ukraine on a regular basis, if any go astray and hit a NATO country that's a far higher cause of escalation of the conflict

Russia has used both long range cruise missiles & long range ballistic missiles in their cowardly murdering war on Ukraine, many have been fired at civilians & infrastructure, such as hospitals, railway stations & power utility plants.

There’s a fairly big caveat
The engines in these going forward are not the same
The engines used to rely on Ukrainian industries so Russians having to install older soviet era engines
This is like Russians claiming to have increased tank production but when you scratch under the propaganda paint you realise what they talk about is putting an anti drone cage on a 50 year old tank that was rusting in back arse of Siberia and voila you have a “modern” Russian tank and nice figures to report up to Putin
Ukraine is not a member of NATO. Neither does NATO as an organization have a military presence in Ukraine. Its incorrect to say:
NATO personel have to do the targeting with these weapons, not Ukrainians. As Putin said that is a declaration of war on Russia
Its important to get this correct as there are Russian propagandists using NATO as a boogeyman to justify their invasion of Ukraine and annexing its territory.
Individual countries are free to support Ukraine like France, UK, USA, Australia, Japan, etc if they want.
Sweden has printed pamphlets telling its citizens how to prepare for war.
What else do you imagine Russia will do? Beyond what they're already doing.
So far, in my estimation, slamming a cruise missile into a children's oncology ward is probably the worst thing they've done.

Peace isnt the mere absence of 'war'. It is being able to live in safety and security. Russian occupation or the constant threat of Russia attacking again, destabilisation tactics as it used from 2014 is not peace.
Rewarding illegal warfare with territory and domination of countries - nothing is less likely to lead to peace.

Read the Spiegel article(s), they're in depth, thoroughly researched and quite conclusive, unlike your own repudiation based purely on what, a "hunch"?
I repeat: I've no objections to what the Ukrainians did, assuming it was them. And I doubt Russia is sophisticated enough to do something like that and not leave mountains of evidence like with all their other crude operations
The German investigation is very conclusive from what I've read (the full investigation in Spiegel) and my understanding is that it's pretty much agreed it's by far the most likely explanation.
The vessel used, the techniques, the Ukrainian guy who was hiding in Poland and tipped off by Polish security and fled to Ukraine before the Germans could get him arrested under European arrest warrant.
I put it this way: if it wasn't Ukraine then Russia did an amazingly good job of making it look like Ukraine, and since when has Russia displayed anything like that level of competence?
