Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Hmm. Agreed it is totally overpriced, but the location is not great - no privacy, overlooked, a road going past the front door to a busy ferry pier. Probably would have issues with drainage for a septic tank/biomass unit. Serious issues with acceptance of design for a replacement house, permission to demolish, etc.....the list goes on. Dreamers, lots of better (including floating!) stuff out there!

Anyone got any clarity on whether non-Howth boats will be allowed to race in the Lambay race on June 12th ?
The headline on Winkie’s article below suggest it might be limited to Howth boats?
    Cheers

Club haven't clarified to members what the plan is yet. Id say if it goes ahead it'll be club only they won't want visitors in the club and with the season getting back underway can't see much interest from boats across the bay to come over

We always did the Lambay Race but infrequently stayed for drinks in HYC; same for their regatta. It was too much of a slog to get back to DL and for those on swinging moorings the launch service would be finished. (Not saying we didn't open a few on the way home.......)

Its a slog going either way. Spent more time racing from starts in DL last year without setting footing in DL. Opened more then our fair share heading back to howth.

Think lack of boats going across the bay goes both ways which is unfortunate

    Howth only unfortunately
The Lambay Races were scheduled for June 5th and just missed the bus for the permitted recommencement of competition.  The event has been rescheduled to June 12th, which fortunately has a suitable tide (HW 13.37) to fast-track boats to and from the Island.  With open air consumption of food and drink permitted on the HYC premises from June 7th, subject to restricted table sizes and social distancing, entries for the Lambay Races will be limited to HYC based boats in order to ensure that members have as much space ashore as possible to socialise.

Don’t see why they can’t invite Other Dublin based boats simply for the race, and instruct them to return to home port once their race is finished…..

So the DL boats head around in the morning (with the tide), do the race and immediately return to DL (again with the tide).

  • Registered Users Posts: 92 ✭✭Major Dad

Yeah - it’s a shame. We (and probably others from Malahide) would have done the race and come straight back to Malahide afterwards. We wouldn’t have been expecting to go into Howth for a beer afterwards.
Anyways, fingers crossed that the Gibney Classic race will be run after this summer. Maybe by that stage we’ll be able to congregate in the yard in Gibneys afterwards.

Yep. Was something similar in DL last year for the National regatta.

1st sail of the year today. Isora "training" race. A miserable start to the season. Left howth at 830 in the rain crossed the bay in rain & a chop and played avoid the incoming ferries. Beat from the start out to east kish by that stage we were mostly frozen then kite up to Benett & then to virtual mark and finish. Not the most enjoyable day but great to be out and to see so many boats out doing DBSC "training" when we got back.

I’m looking at the boats here and trying to figure out which are the Howth boats…. I know Indian is a Howth boat…. And perhaps Outrajeous?

Considering pulling the trigger on a rubber dinghy from the U.K.
    (WavEco 260 with Airmat floor...)

As soon as I selected Ireland as the delivery, the VAT immediately dropped off, so I presume I'll be asked to pay VAT by the postman/delivery uy when it's delivered here? and at what rate? 23%?

How does the VAT due work out on deliveries from the U.K.? Pay on delivery? I remember doing it years ago with an order from America and it was cash to the postman only...

    oh shizer!!!!

So if purchase price is £375, VAT should be another 23% on top of that, £86.25, then what would I be talking for Duty & Customs Agent Fee?

(its actually coming in at £413.98 on their site (Marine Scene) as their charging £38.99 shipping)..

might be easier to just sail over to Wales to collect it and pay U.K. VAT on it...

Let me know if you need crew!

I am sick of getting roasted on stuff from the UK. I converted a camper recently and got stung big time on a some the items I brought in for the conversion.

Aside from the fact that it's taking about 3 weeks or so to actually get the stuff in, a lot of sellers don't have processes in place for export and can;t be arsed with the paperwork so they are simply just declining business from ROI.

Others don't seem to be aware that if they're exporting an item then they don't have to charge VAT (we pay it at the point of entry) so an Irish buyer might have to pay it twice...

To make matters worse many of the Irish agents for niche items are UK based

I'm thinking Northern Ireland might be the loophole, but I was looking and not a whole lot in the way of chandlers up there...
found Bosun Bobs & Sands, but not a lot in the way of inflatable dinghy offerings..

A lot of the seagull engine parts I have bought over the years came from the UK but it looks like I won't be doing any more as even the smallest part now cost 25 euros to post. :(

With insurance and fuel prices it would not be feasible you would probably also have to carry a powerboat cert to cover the insurance as they are very dangerous things in the wrong hands. Lakeside marina do day hire boats some with cuddy cabins but you won't be getting up on the plane in any of them :)

Reading the EV thread the pic is about four years old. Not making excuses for the guy, but with a few dozen Teslas in the country back then it's not the same 'issue' as it would be today.

Yeah, only realised it was a few years ago when there were more Tesla chargers than Tesla’s in the country….

    Hi all,

In a moment of probable madness late last year - a friend and I purchased a little 14foot Fletcher speedboat with a '92 Yamaha 60 autolube on it, one of those 'seems like a good deal' things.. :D

The trailer has pretty much disintegrated since towing it home so before we either sell the lot as a project or buy a new trailer to use ourselves - we would like to get the boat, particularly the motor looked at.

In typical newbie fashion - we know nothing about boats, or outboards so hoping that someone here might recommend a mechanic who could come take a look at it and either give it a once over - or at worst give us a list of things wrong with it so we can look at our options.

Would anyone be able to recommend someone who could come take a look - Kildare/newbridge area?

    Cheers :)

Oh wow, that’s interesting…. Fairly far offshore for a kite surfer to be!!!

I guess all times will be recorded and and the time spent during the rescue will be subtracted from their time.

Yeah, their back in the race now…..

You might get lost in here with all the chit chat :) maybe start a new topic in the forum if you need to. My advice to you would be to get rid of the lot if you do not know what you are doing and look for a good running boat if you still want one. If the trailer was let to go to pieces I'm sure the rest of the boat and engine has also, for a mechanic to work on it you could be looking at 60=80 euros an hour on top of the cost of a water pump kit, new oil top and bottom, carb kit and so on then you have the price of a trailer and any boat repairs $$$$$$$$$$$$$$

hi Fergal, thanks for the reply, wasn't sure if this was the best spot, wasn't sure I warranted a thread - will look at starting one up :)

I should have given a little more detail in my initial post, the boat was stored in a shed for most of its life, but the trailer was left outside so its in a much worse state of repair - thankfully, the transom on the boat 'appears' to be solid but haven't taken the motor off or anything to do a detailed investigation.

The motor does run, we put an impeller, new 2t oil & new spark plugs in it before we started it up (it had been sitting for 4-5 years in the last guy's shed)

We have had it in water, briefly, it floats (yay :D) and the motor does run and engage in forward and reverse, but she doesn't go particularly fast or get on the plane, she did get onto the plane at one point but it was short lived and unexplained - it has manual trim which appears to be damaged so not sure if this is the cause of the lack of speed or something else.

Would be happy to pay decent money for someones services - even just to tell us if it's a go-er or a scrapper, we don't really want to sell it without a decent understanding of it's condition to be honest, wouldn't really feel comfortable pricing it or letting it on to someone without knowing true details of it. (probably should have applied that logic when buying - but them's the breaks :pac:)

It would be rude not to post a photo I guess:

    Hi all,

I recently got involved in both power boating and sailing and I am loving both.

I am looking to get a good quality log book that captures both powerboating & sailing, is there a ‘go to’ log book that everyone uses or or they all the same.

    Thanks.
