I can't see us needing that many tests, lockdown was pointless if that many people are coming forward then. I'd hope the figure being tested would be in the low thousand or less.

Extra testing capacity could be put to use as was done in other countries to sample more randomly and assess silent spread (asymptomatic), etc. Better to use some on that than have only a few percent in use.

Is it possible the June bank holiday will be locked down also I'd say
They might because that will also the last one for a long time up to Aug.

They'll probably still be locking us down at Christmas and holohan will still be telling us the next two weeks are critical

Harris predicted 15k tests daily in mid March, only Minister speak. This 100k per week sounds good but usual HSE spin. That’s a million by July. Two million tested by October. No good if results take weeks.
We're at 150K tests now. De Gascun kind of sighs now about the 15K, it really bit them in the ass. They did aspire to having it very early but a perfect storm of hypochondriacs and reagent wars put paid to that. Being about the only thing anyone could understand at that time also kept it well up in the news.

Harris was far too enthusiastic and inclined to drop the number as imminently guaranteed. The other main players remained "hopeful" until they finally owned up to the issues, yet you'd wonder if we could have dealt such bad news earlier than we found out.

Come off it. We've hit the targets set out to us. The HSE have failed to hit theirs.

76 arrests so far for flouting the rules?
Cyclists behaving like there are no rules.

Many people driving to go walking in parks.

Everyone knows there has been more activity this past week. People are making up themselves whether the rules apply to them or not.

Prepare yourself for more lockdown ladies and gentlemen. They wont be much easing of restrictions for another few weeks.

They asked us to flatten the curve, We did. They asked us to give them time to prepare testing, get icu in order etc, We did.
This is costing hundreds of millions per day.
If there is no easing on the 5th they need to review it every single day and not this blanket 2 extra weeks.
Otherwise give us concrete figures that we need to see so everyone knows where we are going The medical side will never recommend easing until this is gone and that is understandable because that is their remit.
A balanced approach needs to be taken with economists, politicians, central bankers medics all having input.
Leo needs to step in here and make a judgement call on the overall situation regarding public health, economy and all the other factors. The minister for health and the doctors will always recommend maximum attack on the virus with disregard for any other factor.

All of it. Harris laughing in the middle of it deserves to go viral. Why isn't he distancing with his underlying health condition, where's his mask. Leo taking the preverbial as well with a mask around his neck yesterday.

Don't worry it was a joke, it must be gutting to see what you've worked so hard for face hard times through no fault of your own. If common sense prevails then golf will be one of the first things to be reintroduced along with other activities like water sports, hiking etc.

yeah right, easy to say that now. It wasn't very funny.

Too many sanctimonious posters here speaking from their perspective only!
I too struggle with mental health issues which are completely alleviated by being with people and by being out in the wilds of nature, not 2km tramping around locally on crowded concrete paths.

It is now 7 weeks since I went anywhere or saw anyone, I had to self isolate in the 2nd week of March and then the restrictions kicked off. Zero compassion and understanding from some posters about the huge effects lockdown is having on many people, especially people on their own.

We see now how the Department and HSE operate. It illustrates why the Health Service is in such a mess over the last twenty years. Takes forever to make a decision on any issue.

No point testing in three weeks time if people have it now as it will largely have cleared

That's why we need antibody testing

I'm not going to dispute that some people haven't fully complied, but you can't argue with the numbers. The Irish public not only achieved their targets, they smashed them. The HSE are ****ing miles off their testing capacity target. The HSE/NPHET set both targets, and they're going to punish everyone because of their own failure.

Holohan seams to be running the country now - as the majority of us face up to economic devasation, those of us NOT lucky eneogh to be public servants - everywhere else is loosening ther lockdowns, but Ireland will just hunker down for a few more months - Nanny state becoming an economic banana republic.

Why does more lockdown translate to having to do it for another 2 years..?

I thought the goal is to minimise contact to allow the virus to die off (because it needs more humans to live).. once it is killed off enough, then we slowly start to lift restrictions with many restrictions in place until a vaccine is found.

Combined with decent testing to monitor the situation this seems to be what we are aiming for (and not like this heard immunity nonsense, wghich can only be truely actualised IF there is a vaccine and the immunity lasts).

So I would assume until testing increases and the virus has dies down a bit, we can look at lifting restrictions. If we go too early the virus will spread and another lock down will begin.

None of this translates to a correlation between an extension now meaning 2 more years of this. If just means right now we all have to double down a bit more for a short while in the hope that it will die out enough. Just like other coronavirus outbreaks over the years.

Lockdown was never supposed to make the virus die off. If I genuinely thought another month of lockdown would get rid of the thing I would gladly do it & support the cause for the greater good of everyone.
The reality is that the virus is here to stay until we build up antibodies, and find a cure or a vaccine. No amount of staying at home will make it go away.

The purpose of the lockdown was to buy time to prepare the health system for the influx of cases, organise additional beds and implement social distancing protocol to the general public. That was it. That was the end goal and we have done what we set out to do.

A startling number of people seem to believe the purpose of it was to ‘kill off’ the virus and won’t be happy easing the lockdown until cases go down to zero and that’s never going to happen.

I don't pay enough attention to his haircut to be honest. Plenty of people are getting haircuts by the looks of things.

I'm sharing a household with two family members, one of whom is a manic depressive and the other a violent chronic alcoholic. I've done everything ive been asked to do for the past seven weeks and have been so much looking forward to this Friday to see some light at the end of the tunnel. My only escape generally is to f*ck off to the mountains on my own every couple of weeks to get some respite. In recent weeks my job has fired 90% of my team and moved the workload to those remaining, meaning I now am expected to work a 16 hour day and I am questioned if I take a lunch break. I receive emails at 9pm with a warning that I have a two hour deadline to respond. And in addition I'm being threatened every day that my job is on the line if I don't do exactly what I'm told to do, and I should be grateful to still have a job, if I lose it, I'm the only earner in the house and will not be able to pay my mortgage. I have foregone some food shopping to try and squirrel away some money to an extra months mortgage. I have lost 15% of my body weight (I wasn't overweight to start so that's not a good thing)

Despite everything I've stayed as happy as can be and been positive to any friends ive spoken to, in the hope, the ever living hope that this week would see some semblance of a plan and conscious that we all need to support each other through this.

No apparent view of the future, no plan, no vision. I hate to say this on a public thread but on my solo inside 2km exercise today, I stopped at the river and gazed so deeply into its depths. As I walked awayfrom it, conscious of my family responsibilities, a passing jogger ran past me and coughed in my face. (Not intentially)

I don't want the pubs to open, I don't care that I'm hairier than cousin it from the addams family, I don't care about most things but I want to know that our government have some idea what is going to happen. I need to see a plan to get through this and not a never ending, sure two more weeks and we'll see what happens. For me, every day in work is constant fear and every day off work means nothing more than additional sleep during which I have horrible, terrifying nightmares.

I appreciate this is new to us all and we have to learn from others experiences, and i appreciate this is here to stay. But to all of those who say that were nothing but a bunch of pub missing hairdresser attending snowflakes, I assure you the reality for some is awful. As I saw on a recent meme, as I lie me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep, and if I die before I wake, good.

I will continue to do as advised and continue to follow the rules but please stop being so dismissive of other peoples circumstances and the reasons why some are beginning to creak at the edges.
