This latest instalment of the Variations on a Theme contest is based around seminal sci-fi show The Twilight Zone.

In order to let as many people get in on this as possible, the contest is going to run from today, the 7th of June, until midnight on the 30th June.

Anyone wishing to enter should either post on this thread or PM me and I will PM you back one of the one-sentence synopses of an episode selected at random.

I'll update this with the names of those who are competing as I send out the PMs.

I'll start with those who have expressed interest in the other thread

The word limit is approximately 2000 so 2200 words is fine if your story needs that many to finish it off but 2800 is pushing it a bit.

You may submit and resubmit at any time between the moment you receive your synopsis and the end of the contest by PMing me your story.

The following contestants have submitted stories:

    bluewolf
    angelll
    Antilles
    Das Kitty
    hcass
    Kinski
    Supermensch
    Blush_01needacchelp
    D-FENS
    Arlecchina
    --Kaiser--
    Oryx

    Hit me!

There's also the problem if they run too long of anyone even bothering to read them! :D

So they need to be Twilight Zone in style then?

The synopses will more or less force you to write them TZ style but even if not it's probably best to keep to a supernatural theme.

Should it be in short story format or in screenplay format?

While I'd love to think we could do it as screenplays I think it's best to stick to short stories.

Sixteen already. If this keeps up we might have to put a limit or break it up somehow.

We could make it two groups with the top 4 from each into a final? It could make for a long contest but sure what else would you be doing only watching the football.

Really looking forward to this - can't wait to read what everyone writes.

So excited I think I might cough up a lung! Oh no, wait, that's a chest infection...

    Thanks Picka. :)

Okay, I'll definitely give this one a go, although I've never written anything like it! Thanks Pickarooney

That's 20 then. Assuming everyone enters I think heats and a final are definitely on the cards. That would probably mean the qualifiers writing a second story.

May as well throw my hat in the ring, although I find real life hard enough to write about so sci fi is going to be nearly impossible.:o

I've had a couple of people tell me they were stumped by the synopsis they received so to be nice I'm giving everyone one chance to throw back their story outline and get a new one. If you don't like the second one, tough luck.

I need a good kick up the arse, writing-wise. Send me my outline! I'm in.

Heh. I was really tempted to beg for a new synopsis, too; mine's so specific! I'm going to be brave, do a bit of research and stick with it, though.

I was just about to too, and then an idea came to me. So hopefully it won't be too bad.

    Now for the execution.

I'm interested though I don't write fiction. It would be a great exercise.
