The build quality is very good on these Velatura's. The case back has a cool design also.

my god that is mouth watering literally. getting the idea of buying a nice watch recently and been looking into seiko's recently. think this is the one i was.

how often do you have to wind it up or will it go on its own movement.

seen it on amazon for $600, good price i think but is there anywhere you would advise buying in a shop in ireland that can match that price roughly

That's a really good price, I think it would be hard to beat or match that in a shop. I'm not sure if Amazon.com will ship watches internationally, I've never tried.

I've seen this is model in Weirs and also in Field's Jewellers I think it was, it may have been Rocks Jewellers, it was around the €900. This was probably about 9 months ago so the price may be different now or they might not have them in stock anymore. Worth checking those places on Grafton Street to see if you can try it on and if they can offer you a good price.

Yep just turn the crown to charge it first and then it charges while it's on your wrist. It has a battery in it also where you can build the charge upto one month. The indicator on the left hand side shows how much of a charge you have.

Picked up this vintage Seiko 7s26-0050 just before christmas but hadn't got around to taking pictures.. Came on a Seiko rubber strap and had the bracelet included but decided to stick it on this Nato.

    Cool and interesting watches.
But for someone like me who at some point was forced to wear jocks & socks (and everything else) with "Bund" written on them ...somehow they just don't have the same appeal :D

It's funny; I know lots of people that are ex-forces (UK mostly but also German, Indian etc) and not a single one of them has ever even had a sniff of an issue watch. I suppose it probably pays to be one of the QMs mates, technically known as being a REMF.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,819 ✭✭✭✭peasant

To get an issue watch in the Bundeswehr you had to be a professional soldier (not drafted in other words) and you had to have a permanent assigment where the job specs actually said that you needed a watch with certain functions.

Only very few job specs actually did.
But if it did you HAD TO wear the Bund watch ...no matter what lovely timepiece you might actually have brought to the job yourself.

It seems to have been more common in the past. Maybe because in the 30/40/50's a lot of young men who joined the forces(mostly working class lads) simply didn't have/couldn't afford a serviceable watch? A halfway decent quartz(timekeeping wise) can be had for 10 or 20 quid today, you'd have to spend much more relatively speaking for a similar mechanical back in the day. Even more so for a stopwatch/chrono watch. I recall reading a book about war in the trenches in WW1 and it mentioned how the officers "new fangled wristlet" cost the equivalent of two months wages for a working man. Plus many civvie watches of the time wouldn't have been ideal for military use. No lume, white dials, soft cases, zero protection (and small size), even though in general most official issue for the ordinary soldier often weren't that much better. Today the average Casio, Timex etc would be perfectly fine. Plus for pilots back then they had to rely far more on accurate timekeepers. Today that stuff is all built into the aircraft and from ground control.

A lad I knew who was in the US marines owed me one after covering for him and his mates(long story, but drink was involved :D) and I asked him to try and source me one of the US issued watches and he had a hard enough time trying for me. Like he said the PX was chockablock with casios, ironmans even Rolex so few of the lads ever bothered anymore with the issued watches. He did get me one in the end from a mate of his who happened to have one. He did tell me specialised guys like divers and SAR lads still got issued watches.

Yeah, I was researching for quite awhile on a new watch and always came back to the prc-200, always find myself starring at it longer than I should when checking the time...

I have tried to rationalise my collection a little bit (off loaded quite a few digitals).

I currently have a Seiko Marinemaster 'MM300' SBDX001, Omega Aquaterra (2500), Stowa 1938 Chronograph on the go. I can justify one more automatic (but only one !)

I'm eyeing up an Omega Speedmaster as my next purchase...but can't get Planet Oceans out of my head (love them - but couldn't justify one in the same box as the Marinemaster, which I really love and isn't going anywhere).

Depends what you're looking for, I'm a bit of a sucker for the whole moon watch history and for me it's what the Speedmaster Pro is all about. So I had to get the 3570.50 (Handwind, hesalite, solid caseback), and the lemania movement.

But the co-axial's are a more modern movement, arguably more accurate timekeeping and longer service intervals. Also offers date, and day/date versions.

Both versions have their strengths, best to see them in person, and do a little research regarding the moonwatch history if you're not familiar.

Interesting and humorous article here: http://pippick.com/speedypro/speedypro1.htm

Me too - and it's the 3570 I would plump for,to be bought on bracelet but spending most of its time on black croc with a deployant.

My Aquaterra has the co-axial 2500 movement. It is a genuinely innovative design and as regards reliability & accuracy I find the watch (now 6 or 7 years old, one routine service at Omega) to be well within COSC specs continuously - and this watch has most certainly not been babied.

But in a speedmaster - the 3570 please.

As Mrs. P also has a liking for nice watches, this is what she bought recently (see pics below) ...Vostok Amfibia "Lady First"

A very nice watch, very solid. It may not look it in the pictures, but apart from the strap everything is stainless steel, no plastic. In deviation from other Amfibias, this is a 17 Jewel handwind and only 100m water resistant.
Still it should do nicely for the next holiday on the beach.

It also has a nifty strap where the excess is looped inside (instead of through a keeper), so no loose ends flapping around. Sadly the pic of that is out of focus ...but no hope of getting the watch back for a second shoot ;)

I do love the fact that the design has aged so well, a proper classic.
If bullseye could get one from before that date with the actual movement that was used by the Apollo missions even better as they'll hold their value for longer I reckon. I think they changed over from the earlier movement in 68/69?

I agree 100% S one of the best chronos ever IMH.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

The 321 movement would probably add a few thousand to the price tag? I'd certainly be interested if the right one came along at the right price.
