Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Following requests on the Bargain Alert thread the following are useful links for Ferguson Ariva 120 users

    Current Firmware
    Version 2.15B8

    (1) Decompress the ZIP-file and copy software file to the root directory of the USB portable memory.
    (2) Plug USB portable memory into USB port of receiver.
    (3) Go to Menu->Tools->Upgrade By USB
    (4) As upgrade mode please choose: Allcode+bootloader
    (5) Select desired software file
    (6) Press start to upgrade receiver
    (7) Please wait... After upgrade done successfully receiver will reboot automatically

Due to fact that new software don't contain any user data base (channel list), as last step you have to check antenna settings and search satellite or upgrade receiver with desired channel list."Note: Please note that after the update is recommended to restore the factory settings!

Please do not upload the channel list created and stored on earlier versions of the software! Uploading the "old" list of channels can cause errors in the receiver, or even permanent damage!

Instead, we suggest uploading the list of functions FastScan use as a base to create your own list of channels."

After doing a full scan a quicker way of deleted unwanted channels is as follows:-

    (1) Insert USB stick
    (2) Go to Menu->Tools->Upgrade By USB
    (3) As upgrade mode please choose: dump
    (4) Start
    (5) You will then have a file called "Dumpfile.abs" on the memory stick.

    Download Ariva Editor Here
Unzip file to a folder and double click ArivaEditor.exe

    (1) File > Open
    (2) select .abs file type and then chose the dumpfile.abs
    (3) select User data base

The channel list should now show up and you can delete and move channels as you please and sort favourite groups. Save file to usb stick again as a user database. You can rename the dumpfile to what ever you want in windows explorer but remember to keep the file extension *.abs.

    To upload this again

    (1) Insert USB stick
    (2) Go to Menu->Tools->Upgrade By USB
    (3) As upgrade mode please choose: userdb
    (4) Upgrade file - toggle left or right to chose the file with your channel list
    (5) Start

Channel list created with new firmware and edited into Favourite groups. DTT channels are for three rock so you may need to recan the Irish channels depending on where you live.

Will check when I get home tonight Tony.

Edit: I only had it set up for Astra 2a and Eurobird. If you click on the satellite information and then on Astra 2a you will see the channel list.

All channel scan for all Astra satellites and Eurobird Here

On clicking the link, scroll down to the bottom of the page and select slow download.

Load abs file into Editor and delete, ammend as appropriate. Save to USB and then flash to the receiver.

are these all the channels that I should be receiving from a sky dish (28.2) and aerial?

Not necessarily. In the Installation Menu, you can choose what satellites you want to scan. The vast majority are on Astra 2A & Eurobird 1. You can als include all the other satellites bobbing arou. at 28.2 or 28.5 E. You can do a blind scan for each satellite. Just be aware that there is a huge amount of duplication between the 2 main satellites. There is also the option of saying Yes or No for scanning FTA channels. If you say No, all the subscription channels will tune in as well. You will then spend hours editing the list down to what you want, and get rid of the rubbish. In the end you will find that you will not be too far away from the list on the link above.

I just opened that channel list with the editor, and there appears to be alot of rubbish/duplicates - has anyone compiled and exported a channel list free from duplicates and with the main ones included?

    thanks

Yes you can do that no problem , all entries will work . The ali editor is not the best so you might find some functions easier to do on the box itself .

I've made up a basic free to air channel list embedded in the latest firmware which can be got here http://www.mediafire.com/?w55mpzddw363hcc
Please use with caution as you can damage your box if you do not follow the upgrade instructions carefully.

Please let me know if you think any FTA channels are missing or you might like to do a bit of editing to make your own list.

just had a scan through that list, looks great :) so basically - the channel list is included with this firmware so when I flash it to my 120 it should sync the channel list also?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,907 ✭✭✭✭Kristopherus

Be careful with Channel 4 & +1. Do not save the Irish one. This may result in a blank screen on some (rare) occasions. Save one each of the UK ones if yous can.

It will overwrite your existing channel list with this one unless of course you edit it with the editor program and thus create a new list.

Can anyone tell me what the new firmware fixed, don't want to lose my full sky channel list and have to start over again if it is nothing significant. Thanks

Derrywan - do you need a decoder card for any of the SKY channels?
In the version I have installed I have not seen any SKY channels available but I always chose to only pull the FTA channels.

    Cheers

Has anyone setup up their Ariva 120 to connect to the internet wireless yet? I currently have a long ethernet cable connected from the modem but it's a bit messy so I'm looking to upgrade. Anyone have any recommendations for using a wireless modem in client mode or using home plugs?

Taltos, if you have a current sky sub card it will work on the Ariva 120

There are two channel lists posted. The first is an edited one which I created to suit my taste. As other people may have different tastes I also posted a second list for all the channels scanned in on Astra 2 and Eurobird. This enables people to edit the list in the editor without having to sit through a full scan. I suspect thats the one you downloaded.

    A wireless bridge dongle?

I have homeplugs which i could test for you if you wish? I use them for a sonos player and they work brilliantly and i have a spare one.

Yeh I was wondering which was the better option or worked best, I'm edging towards the wireless dongle as it's cheaper.

Got my box today, tried using an iPod Nano as flash memory but the box doesn't seem to recognize it (upgrade by USB is grayed out)

I'll have to find a usb flash drive, when I'm installing your firmware Tony do do I select Allcode+Bootloader?

    thanks

This will not work I'm afraid you need a separate cable from the dish for each box.

Yep, you'll need a multi output lnb, twin, quad or octo and run a cable to each box.. you can split the terrestrial signal though.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4 ezzy01

Figured as much but it says otherwise in the user manual provided you don't have the ariva box on the other should work... according to the manual.. Looks like i'm for the roof tomorrow have a quad reciever up there already. Already split the terrestrial signal...

Here's a post I stuck in another thread:
I bought a Ferguson Ariva 120 a couple of weeks ago. Cost me €150 (I didn't see the thread that says you can order them much cheaper from some Polish website. Then I got a 1TB hard drive from PC World for €65.
They seem to work fine together. I get the Digital Terrestrial Television channels (RTE 1, 2, News, Jr, TV3, E3, TG4) and free satellite ones (all of the various regional versions of BBC & ITV, Channel4, E4, More4, Film4, all of their +1 versions, and a whole lot of other crap like shopping channels)
I can record from one channel, while watching another.
Criticisms: Whoever did the programming for it needs to take a serious lesson in user friendliness, perhaps from the people who programmed Sky boxes. Print on on-screen-display is way too small and in a poor choice of colour for the print and background. The display is also cluttered with unneccessary info. Makes me miss the nice big yellow print on blue of the Sky box.

A friend got a hard drive from some other friend with about 450 movies on it, about 500GB worth.
I thought, Great, I'll copy them over to my new 1TB drive. When I plugged it into my new box, though, it wouldn't play them. I can hear the movie allright, but all that comes up on screen is "Video Codec not Supported".

Given that the experts appear to be here, I've a couple of questions:
1: Can I check somehow if there's a version number for the software in the machine, and whether there's more up to date software available?
2: Is it likely to be worth hooking up to the net to upgrade, as I don't currently have the net except only phone?
3: In newer versions of the software, is it anymore user friendly or readable, as I have mentioned in my criticisms above.
4: Does anyone know if a software upgrade would sort my "Video Codec not Supported" problem? The movies on the hard drive are in .avi format.

    Thanks in advance.

Thanks, but no, I didn't know that. I'm not the most tech-savvy person in the world! I'd never come across the word 'codec' before.
So, how do I find out what codecs are supported, and how would I go about re-encoding them?
    Thanks again.

AVI is a 'wrapper' for the video.
The video is in a 'format' determined by the codec.
There is a list of supported video codecs in the manual ... don't have it to hand presently, but it was referenced earlier in the thread.

You process the AVI file to change the video to a supported format.
You do so on your computer.
What application you use to do that is dependent on your operating system.
Some suggestions for Windows were also given earlier in the thread ...... sorry I don't use Windows so cannot advise what app is most suitable.

I hope that helps you get started ........ and maybe someone with the relevant info can chime in.

    regards.

EDIT: Sorry ...... maybe the info is in the main Ariva 120 thread :(

I know I can press the yellow button to enlarge the text, but it'd be better if it was just simply large enough to begin with, y'know?

Another thing that bugs me is how the ^ and v buttons work...
With Sky you can use CH+ and CH- to change channels instantly, or you can use the ^ and v buttons to browse around and see (on the banner at the bottom of the screen) what's on the other channels, but without actaully changing the channel. If you find something you'd prefer to watch, you can press Select or else you can just keep watching the channel you were on, without missing any of it. With the Ariva, though, the ^ and v buttons function the same as CH+ and CH-, so you can't see what's on other channels without interrupting your viewing.
When the banner is on the screen, most of its space is occupied by unneccessary and annoying graphs for signal strength and **** like that. All it needs to have is the channel name, what's on now and next, and what time it is now. But because most of the space is taken up by the extraneous ****e I mentioned already, the writing has to be small. Now, I don't have fantastic eyesight. In fact I wear glasses. But when I'm wearing my glasses, they give me 20:20 vision, or damn near. So why the hell do I have to squint at the screen to try to read it?

That's what I meant when I said it wasn't user friendly.

As my son,who normally handles this sort of thing, is away at the moment,I'm unable to download one of the very handy satellite lists as I don't have a usb stick handy. I've all the channels I want (doing it the hard way) but for some reason I'm unable to pull in Sky News HD. I'm able to get it as a scrambled channel but not free to air.I'm using my Sky dish (which always gave me brilliant reception for my old Sky box) so I don't think it's a poor signal problem. Any ideas? Thanks:)

Well, that explains everything then. I'm surprised I've been caught out by that. I've been trying to pull it in for the past 3 hours and came perilously close to giving the Ariva 120 a kick around the room. Otherwise it's an excellent receiver and the dinkiest thing you ever did see.:)

This is a good point. I understand that the additiontal info may be of relevance to someone receiving multiple sateliites. Freesat boxes tend to have a cleaner look with just channel name number and now and next, but that is because all the technical stuff is hidden from the user and is being handled by the box itself.

Maybe the option to hide satellite and frequency info on the Ariva would be a good compromise.
