Was there before and after vicar st Saturday night, I really liked it as did the OH, she likes Camden Hells lager so pints of that for her as I tried a few different drinks, actually thought it was bigger than had been described here.

While not claiming that exactly Bazmo finds the idea of the majority of men drinking beer and ladies drinking wine or spirits amusing. Maybe he just has a strange sense of humour.

Its a specialist beer bar for people who like interesting and unusual beer - men and women, its not for ladies who drink wine. I dont know why this is so difficult for people to get their heads around. Someone opens a specialist venue and people complain that it should be more like every other venue, I dont get it.

I never said it was. If you read my post you'd see that. What I did say was that I think they'll find it hard to keep a profitable amount of customers coming through the door as the place is so niche. Again, I was there on Saturday night and there was about 30 people in it when I arrived and about 10 by kicking out time.

The L muligan has potentially an even worse location, less room and targeting a very similar clientele and I've never been in it when it wasn't jammers.

I'm not sure how niche a pub selling craft beer is now...

The beer market does pies n cheese etc no?

I'm not sure a few bottles of plonk is going to make it or break it.

It does reheated pies. Mulligans has top notch lunch and dinner menu so there's no comparison. If they had a few bottles of wine behind the bar I could go there, they don't so I have no chance.

I'm not trying to compare the menu.

You have a place targeted at people who enjoy craft beer
    You have food.
You have two places with not the best locations
What you don't have is a glass of wine for some folks missus who won't drink craft beer.
This is not going to make or break a place like the beer market.

When against the grain opened they said it would sink because there was no Guinness we're well past this. Surely..

I don't think so. It's a massively brave business model but I think there will be a row back in a couple of months time. We'll see though.

I know it's a new bar but on a Saturday night of a bank holiday weekend most pubs in town are packed. The late bar I went to after about a 5 minute walk away had a queue down the street.

This is not the model of specialist beer bars. The target clientele does not want to be in a packed bar late at night. Its not a high volume model, hence the higher prices. It works all over Europe and the US, it will work in Dublin. Just because Paddy the pint drinker doesnt get it doesnt affect that.

It doesn't matter what way you try and spin it, every bar needs bodies through the door. There's a handful of posters here who've been there so far and a handful over on the beoir forum.

Well it was nicely busy last Saturday afternoon is my only experience, but I don't know how many Boards or Beoir posters were in, we're a rare and shy lot you know?

And perhaps people other than us might go in there too.

It's is a lagre residential area from there to castleknock of young/ middle class that are will to spend . Also they has a massive selection of whiskey and very good food, that attracts people independent body the craft beer offerings

Stoneybatter to phib to cabra I'm not sure where all the middle class money is.

Anytime I've been there the focus has been the beer offerings the food is a background noise. I'm not suggesting they don't make much money from it. I just feel mulligans could pull in the crowds regardless of it.

I'm sure if you talked them I bet they had a few quiet weekends in the early days.

37 runs out to castleknock, also along navan road. the Mannor street area is very mixed these the days plenty if young professionals beat have moved in over the last few years.

They probably could get a crows as solo pub, but it's has a very good rep as a foodies place.

Looks at wj kavanagh, similar set up but never the crowds that mulligans has. at least when I have been there

Middle class profesional foodies are not on the 37 ;)

Mulligan has a bit of an advantage as IIRC it was one of the first to have such a large selection. The staff IMO are top notch in the mulligan from the bar to the floor which has huge pull for me if I was on that side of the city I wouldn't go anywhere else.

It takes time and the beer market will get it's own reg's it should do well coming into the summer months with tourists also. But they need to do some marketing also. The only place I saw anything about them was here.

It was busy enough on Saturday night anyway when I was there, as mentioned its not a place you'd want to drink in if you couldn't move or have a place to sit or stand.

Mulligans food isn't that great. A bit expensive and to many burgers last time I was there.

Although that was the Christmas menu.

I remember being disappointed with the potted crab. Main was pork belly. It was all so so

I haven't being in awhile but Vintage Kitchen do some great food on a similar if not higher level than Mulligans.

You can bring your own beer too

I too think the food in Mulligans is overrated.

The pork belly wasn´t anything special for me there either.

I thought the boar burger and the veal burger before it were both pretty Meh. Over priced and very average. People go on about the Scotch egg too which I was underwhelmed with. It's decent pub food charged at the same rate as some of the best bistros in the city but nowhere near their level on taste.
I like mulligans but the food has always disappointed me there for the price they charge.

With those prices in that location, If they're still there in 2 years I'll take my hat off to them. I live very near by and have watched quite a few places fail there. I've been once and never returned, poor atmosphere, awkward forced "banter" from the staff and somewhat over priced.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 536 ✭✭✭nosietoes

I've rarely seen any of the previous pubs be as busy as the beer market tbh. I like the atmosphere - it's not very pubby but very comfy & great for having a chat.

And given that a lot if the beers are unusual & delicious, I'm very happy to pay a bit extra .

I saw something completely different on a recent visit.
Packed to the rafters on a Saturday afternoon.
Went back late that night, still packed.
Bar men who knew almost everyone's name and almost everything about what they were about to serve.
    Fantastic friendly, lively atmosphere.
A selection where half the time I didn't know what to order in case I missed something.
Noise levels were you can actually have a conversation with the person next to you.

It has every chance unless they do something to shoot themselves in the foot.

Was there a few weeks ago, really wasn't impressed. it was 10pm on a Saturday night, it was quite and I really wanted to punch the hipster barman.

I wont be going out of my way to go back

I long for the days of yore, for the alluring call of a quiet imbibing emporium with quality fare on tap, of a Saturday evening :D;)

Hipster barman must have seriously irked you to want to pugilistically chastise him, so to speak :pac::pac::pac:

    Do tell...

The lack of food was a big part of its appeal for me tbh. Will probably attract a different crowd. Are the Pies being shown the door?

It's not going to be compulsory to eat
