So, is there any need to have a chrome cast of I have a ps3? I can use Netflix on it and it can stream from my PC.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,325 ✭✭✭✭Dozen Wicked Words

If you just want to watch Netflix there probably is no point. If you want to watch things from a wide range of other sources and apps, most of which need to be googled and discussion of which is not permitted, then it absolutely is worth it.

Paid £25 for this a while back on Amazon.

    This is a great deal.

Would recommend one of these for everyone!

I said I'd chance my arm and contact Amazon, they agreed to refund the difference in what I paid!

Meaning I got a Chromecast for less than £15! :)

    Couldn't be happier!

So to those of you that purchased a Chromecast off Amazon recently, contact them and they'll refund the difference :)

Just ordered 2 of Amazon. Price was £20.50 each. Works out at just over €51.
No stock in pcworld Naas or Kildare, plenty in the 3 Liffey Valley branches though.

Well if you have a wife and kids that keep robbing your phone for tv, netflix, streaming you can do those without tying up your phone.

It won't drain your phones battery for starters.

Can I stream HD content to my TV from my laptop with this. Plex is pain . . need an alternative

LocalCast app works well on tablets and phones which are not supported, unselect the internal player and select the LocalCast app as the player, this is for other streaming sites like Sxxxxxx

This also allows you to turn off phone or tablet screen too.

Just bought one in Tesco yesterday for €40:( don't suppose their no quibble guarantee is any use to me now ?

Also I'm using an ipad so the only real use for Chromecast is YouTube as Google won't allow you to download the Chrome browser cast extension so you can cast webpages or pretty much anything you want from the internet onto your tv. I'm not sure if there's an iOS app that works around the problem, if there is I can't find a fix. Which means the chromecast is quite limited on the iPad.

Luckily I'm planning on switching from ipad to android in the next few weeks though I was thinking of taking the Chromecast back to Tesco on account of it. The Currys offer at €30 makes me want to do it even more !

There's a chrome extension called Videostream which works very well. Just select the file and hit play.

or tell them that you received one (or to give) as a present and were unaware of this when you bought it

No, Apple's ridiculous walled garden won't as they don't allow replacement browsers that don't actually use Safari to do everything underneath.

I've a 2tb media player with a few spare USB ports on it. I normally download whatever, throw it on a USB key, and either save it to the hdd or watch direct from the key.

Any reason as to why the Chromecast will make my life better?

Edit: Unless you can watch Wiziwig direct from it, which would save me having to bring the laptop to the living room!

Agreed, though when I bought the Chromecast I didn't know it can't cast webpages from an ipad. But I'm planning on selling the ipad soon and getting a Nexus tablet so the Chromecast will be full use to me then

If you're on an IPhone or IPad the main thing Chromecast will do for you is stream YouTube and Net flix videos onto your tv over your wifi network without the use of any wires. It works great in that regard but for Apple users that's about as far as it goes. There are other apps that work with Apple products (search Reddit for the full list) but anything decent there requires a monthly sub (as does Netflix).

If you want all of the above but plan on sticking with the Apple ecosystem then an Apple TV box would be better suited to you, I think they cost around €90 though so not cheap.
If all you want is an easy (and cheap) way of playing YouTube and Netflix vids from your iphone onto your tv then the Chromecast is superb and for the price you can't go wrong.

At the end of the day you can do all of the above using a wire running from your phone to the tv. But for most people wires are hassle. With the Chromecast plugged into the HDMI slot on your tv you can have YouTube videos on it in seconds, pause them, fast forward, adjust volume, etc.

I picked up two today. Find them pretty poor for doing stuff if you use apple iPhone and iPads. No streaming local content although Vlc is supposed to be bringing that very soon. Already had to reset one a number of times because it keeps rebooting. Although they do work well with plex.
Already have 2nd gen appletvs here and a number of now tv units with plex on them.
I find now tv far superior to the chromecast.

Oh stop, they could've easily said no and that would have been fine.

    I essentially got a £30 value Chromecast for £15 (Had a £5 voucher)

Maybe even get it for £13 if they refund the £2, unlikely though :pac:
