Expanding the blurb on this as it's my event :)

On Friday night as part of Waterford New Music Week, I'll be performing music from my forthcoming live album 'Berlin Alexanderplatz' based around field recordings made in Berlin and performed at festivals and events around Europe over the last 2.5 years. Expect a mix of urban sounds and spacey ambient electronic music. Should be finished by 20:30.

    All welcome and free.

    WATERFORD PHILOSOPHICAL SOCIETY

    GUEST LECTURE

    Russell on Ethics and Metaethics

7.30pm. Monday 22nd April at Waterford Cheshire, John’s Hill

What is ethics? How do we know right from wrong? What does it even mean to say that some action is “right” or “wrong?” Bertrand Russell, one of the greatest philosophers and humanists of the twentieth century, grappled with questions like these all his life. In this lecture, Dr. Peter Stone (Ussher Assistant Professor of Political Science at Trinity College Dublin), a longtime member of the Bertrand Russell Society, will discuss Russell's views on the nature of ethics.

No prior knowledge of philosophy is required. For further information, please visit us on facebook (Philosophia Waterford), e-mail amcgrat@tcd.ie or call/text 085 7238001.

Peter Stone received his Ph.D. from the University of Rochester in 2000. He currently works as Ussher Assistant Professor of Political Science at Trinity College Dublin. Before that, he taught Political Science at Stanford University and held a Faculty Fellowship at Tulane University’s Center for Ethics and Public Affairs. He works in contemporary political theory, with particular interest in theories of justice, democratic theory, rational choice theory, and the philosophy of social science. He is the author of The Luck of the Draw: The Role of Lotteries in Decision Making (Oxford University Press, 2011) and the editor of Lotteries in Public Life: A Reader (Imprint Academic, 2011). He has also published articles in such journals as the Journal of Political Philosophy, the Journal of Theoretical Politics, Political Theory, Rationality and Society, and Social Theory and Practice. He has been a member of the Bertrand Russell Society for over 20 years, serves on its Board of Directors, founded two of the Society’s local chapters, and is a former editor of the Bertrand Russell Society Quarterly.

Waterford Philosophical Society Bloomsday Celebrations 2013

Commencing 6:30 p.m., Sunday 16th June at Phil Grimes, Johnstown.

Following an introductory lecture which will demonstrate some of the ways in which Ulysses can be approached by first-time readers, we will hear guided readings from Joyce’s epic novel. Our celebrations will continue with the screening of a rare documentary about Joyce’s life and work and conclude with a question-and-answer session. While Ulysses will be our primary focus, Joyce’s earlier writings such as Dubliners, Stephen Hero, and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man will be referred to at various points in the evening’s proceedings.

Specific themes to be covered include:

    • The Biographical Sources of Ulysses
    • Joyce’s reading of Homer
    Ulysses in its Historical Context
    • Joyce and Western Philosophy

No prior knowledge of Joyce’s writings is required. For further information, please email amcgrat@tcd.ie or call/text 0857238001.

Saw Helen Mirren in Waterford last night, in a play, ok ok it was a live satellite feed in the cinema for the play 'the audience', never saw anything like this before, it was excellent, nearly as good as being in London for the night. Worth checking out in the future as the Odeon will be doing more of these.
