Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

SA’er Drew Harper posted this great pic today from his Italian pal Roberto. “It’s a fishing boat with a canvas sail. They would plaster newspaper on the canvas when they were racing so air wouldn’t get through. Not sure how they get it off. All the fishermen had the same boat from the same builder, so it’s a “one-design” fleet…”

    taken from sailing anarchy

Back in the days of the square riggers at times when the wind was really light the crew used to turn the fire hoses on the lower sails to dampen the canvas and produce the same effect.

I'm not sure about brick but I do remember a yacht in Skerries called "Garajoma" that was built with cement. :)

There's one in Moy in Ballina town as well, I love it!

Not quite as picturesque as some of the others though.....

(The website where I found this picture says that its purpose is "to stop the sand from blocking the river" which was news to me! I always thought / was told it was a relic from WW2 (or 1, maybe?) when metal was expensive and stone dirt cheap......)

Nope. Maid of Crete looked similar, distinctive bow; she was built probably off similar plans, definitely in the garden of a bungalow near the roundabout at the top of Albert Rd. (border of Glenageary/Dalkey/Killiney). I posted about her on this forum a couple of years ago. It’s almost 40 yrs since I saw her in the Med., at that time she was still painted in her original blue hull with white topsides.
@Heidi – that hull has been moved; I used to (ahem!) fish the Moy as a teenager and remember it differently. We used to pass it regularly as we had permission to camp on Bartra Island then owned by an Irish-American actress and was told it was built at the end of WW1 but did not see active service; later was used as a barge in the North Sea.

There was a "soft chine", manky yellow, concrete keelboat in Rush (Rogerstown) for years. Someone suggested it was waiting to be pebble-dashed!
It wasn't as impractical as it might seem:
    • It didn't need a heating system because the hull warmed up and stored heat during the Spring and Summer and was as cosy as your leaba well into early Winter.
    • Weathershield and PolyFilla are much cheaper than yacht paint and filler and easier to apply.
    • Any damage was easy to repair although to be a proper repairmen, you had to display a bumcrack.
    • Her windows were by Weatherglaze and were double-glazed.
    • Her cabin floor was carpetted over a damp-proof course.
    • And whether on starboard or not, no-one was ever going to argue with it.

Just watching San Andreas. Gotta chuckle at the bit
near the end where the mother drives the rib into the building to save some folks and soon to be no longer estranged husband and then spins off. Only thing is that she forgot to take the pin/rod out so both the engine mounting bracket and transom should be trashed. Any body who knows how to beach a rib/Zodiac/whatever properly (and other shallow situations) knows this and if you forget to pop it in you're in for a minor surprise when switching to reverse.

Spoilered (just a small bit) for the film plot just in case.
