Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Chrome is forever acting the b***ix since updating. Half tempted to do another full fresh install but I'd say it'll make no difference. ):

I have Windows 8.1, if I download Windows 10 will it be free forever? There seems to be some confusion over this, that there may be a subscription service or something after the free first year?

I don't want to bother downloading it if I'm going to be charged for it later on. Can anyone shed some light on this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,904 ✭✭✭Joeface

Windows 10 is a free upgrade for the first year , If you do not take the upgrade during this first year you will have to pay for the OS when the first year expires .

    http://www.howtogeek.com/220957/no-windows-10-won%E2%80%99t-require-a-subscription-heres-how-microsoft-plans-on-making-money-instead/

But if I upgrade in the first year it's also free once the first year expires?

I don't want to download to have it free for the first year and then have to pay subs for each year after and be stuck with it.

So if I download now it's free for the lifetime of my laptop yes?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,904 ✭✭✭Joeface

    THERE ARE NO SUBSCRIPTIONS FEE's

its Free to anyone for life with windows 7 or windows 8 until July 29 2016 , IF you have not taken the upgrade by then you have to pay for the Upgrade

I am finding myself that Windows 10 is taking longer to boot up than my 8.1 that came on my dell laptop :( - windows 8.1 on my laptop was much faster at getting to the start screen from when turning on or restarting. Shall have to check the startup items in msconfig and see whats causing the delay.

Boot Up time on mine from shut down to (name and) password is 12.6 secs, then 6.4 secs from entering password to getting Desktop, have upgraded from 8.1.

There seems to be some confusion over this,
Just in case you didn't get it - THERE IS NO CONFUSION ON THIS POINT.

Microsoft made it very clear from the very first day that they announced that there would be no charge to upgrade from Win7/8 to Win10 for the first 12 months after the release of Windows 10, and that upgrade would be free for the supported lifetime of the upgraded device.

Do yourself a favour, and write off any website or commentator that made you confused on this issue as a completely unreliable source for anything tech related, and never pay any attention to them ever again.

There may not confusion regarding Windows 10 being free - however, it appears to me that there is some uncertainty regarding a reinstall to a reconfigured laptop or PC, say in the event of a HD replacement or motherboard - see earlier discussion in this thread. It appears that, although it will be possible to create W10 media, post download and installation, the serial number generated is a generic and not a unique number. This suggests to me that the W10 installation will have similar status to an OEM Windows installation, which is not at all the same as a purchased version. Therefore, for users with purchased W7 or W8 on their laptops, who upgrade to W10, they will be essentially downgrading to the equivalent of an OEM W10?

Again, there is no reason for confusion.

The key for an upgrade is associated with a Microsoft account. The "generic" key retrieved by older tools is just that - a placeholder key. If you replace your motherboard, you'll be in exactly the same place that you were with your Windows 7 build - automatic activation is going to fail, and you'll need to call support to get it activated.

Theres a tool to stop it auto installing its own driver. You need to use that.

Has anyone had a problem where their PC just hangs before the login screen? POSTs fine and starts to boot, and then it just sits on a blank screen until I hard reset the PC. Doesn't happen too often, but its pretty annoying.

Regarding boot times, mine is about 8 seconds longer, from 14.6 to about 22-23, from W7

Actually, there is plenty of reason for confusion. There is no evidence that keys are associated with a Microsoft account. Upgrade users are given a generic key (and it's the actual key, nothing to do with key retrieval tools using a placeholder. The same key can be seen during initial activation) and activation is done through hardware based IDs, exactly the same as in KMS.

From what we've seen, upgrade users are essentially being given the equivalent of an OEM licence, which isn't valid on new hardware.

Microsoft has said that Windows 10 will be the last numbered version of Windows and that they're moving to an iterative release model. It makes sense that they wouldn't give away millions of permanent Windows 10 licences, but rather tie the lifetime of the upgrade licence to individual hardware, so everyone will eventually pay for a full licence.

Access some hidden settings and shortcuts for settings in Windows 10 using a God Mode folder.... pretty cool.

Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

Had to download another ISO with English International version, because the US version would not allow me to do the above.

Got a nasty fright, as most people know there were some problems with Board.ie
yesterday, now thankfully resolved, I kept getting these redirect messages when attempting to Logon and while using the Google Browser to try and get online (Boards) I got this "Start Menu and Cortana arent working" or words to that effect up on the screen and they certainly wernt, I eventually got out of it by pressing "Ctrl+Alt+Del" and messing around with the settings. At one stage I thought that I might have to reinstall the system image (Win 10) that I had copied on an external hard drive and the Repair Disc 10 that I had copied to a DVD. Everything seems to be fine now.

I had a similar problem with my old laptop and a nVidia card. I installed Win 8.1 drivers and plays smoothly. Also, in my main rig, soundblaster's driver for Win10 have a bug and there is no sound. So I also installed Win8.1 drivers and works fine.

Should I have had my automatic upgrade by now?
    I signed up yonks ago for the free upgrade to my PC and even got the little icon on my task bar. However it's still there even though my laptop successfully upgraded itself some weeks back. When I click on it I get this;

    Windows%2010%20Please%20wait_zpsj8jturcm.jpg

I've even tried leaving this overnight to see would anything happen but next morning it's still the same.

go into Start and type windows update. Click on Check for updates. It should pick up the windows 10 upgrade if you reserved your update previously!

I've just installed Windows 10 yet I keep getting a blank screen after start up. I'm able to see the screen where I enter my password but after hitting enter the screen goes black and all I can see is my mouse cursor. Ctrl-alt-del does bring up my task manager etc but having restarted my computer a few times I keep getting the same problem, any help on fixing this would be greatly appreciated.

Try boot to safe mode and see if you can get in that way. If you can just restart and will more than likely be able to log on normally.

First Major Update for Windows 10 Available Today
Today, we reach our next milestone as the first major update to Windows 10 is now available* for PCs and tablets. With this update, there are improvements in all aspects of the platform and experience, including thousands of partners updating their device drivers and applications for great Windows 10 compatibility. Windows 10 also starts rolling out to Xbox One today and select mobile phones soon.

But most importantly, with this free update we have reached the point in the platform’s maturity where we can confidently recommend Windows 10 deployment to whole organizations.

According to reddit post's it is possible to upgrade using the ISO from techbench as it has been reported the update is about 2.7 GB in size.

Edit 14/11/15 00:15 --- Successfully used the techbench ISO to update my laptop tonight.

What’s New in Windows 10’s First Big Update (Which Arrives Today)

Microsoft yanks Windows 10 November upgrade from download site.

You can no longer update using the Media Creation Tool or the Techbench ISO's!

A step backward, I have limited broadband and it was handy to be able to download ISO's from free wifi.

Looks like MS resolved the problem with the update, and you can now update again using Media Creation Tool or the Techbench ISO's.

I do not understand what their rationale is for doing this? Any ideas?

I haven't yet upgraded to W10 but would have thought that the latest version should be available for download, once the upgrades are released, rather than doing this is a piecemeal manner.

Finished installation around 1300 hrs with no problems, seems to be working away fine so far... doesnt seem hugely different to 8.1.

The above referred to August 6th last and Windows 10 worked away with no problems for a few months. Over the past few months it has become a pain in the butt....runs for hours after any updates on attempted Restart(s) I have to either do a hot shutdown or press Ctrl+Alt+Del and play around with it to get it back to "normal", it will then run away fine again until the next batch of updates. Occasionally some of the icons on the Desktop are/go blank which entails some more black magic.
I (wife) have another Laptop with Windows 7 with Windows 10 upgrade available but under no circumstances, even when support ends for Windows 7 will I upgrade it, anyone thinking of upgrading now from Windows 7...DO NOT, is my humble advice.

Sorry guys if this has been answered umpteen times although I did see an answer in the second post of this thread but just in case anything has changed in the last 6 months I decided its safer to ask.

I just recently bought a desktop PC with Windows 8.1 installed and only last night I downloaded Windows 10 but its not installed yet. Will all my current settings and installed programmes etc remain the same after I install 10?

Thanks from a PC dummy :)

My advice is copy your music, photos, to a dvdr or a usb drive before you do the w10 install,
windows 10 has different menus, settings, to a certain extent ,
it has more emphasis on desktop mode, for mouse, keyboard ,users,
but it still runs windows metro apps .

    http://www.howtogeek.com/197559/how-to-install-windows-10-on-your-pc/

I see no point in updating to windows 10 from windows 7 unless you really want certain
w10 apps or to use tablet mode ,
i understand w10 maybe slightly more secure than windows 7.

    http://www.techrepublic.com/article/windows-10-violates-your-privacy-by-default-heres-how-you-can-protect-yourself/

Step 3: Install it mostly by clicking the Next button, making sure to CHOOSE Upgrade when prompted. If you want to clean install, follow our clean install instructions instead.

WRITE DOWN THE windows 7, license key before you start .

    http://www.groovypost.com/howto/upgrade-windows-8-1-to-windows-10/

Note: Before starting the upgrade, make sure you have all of your important data BACKED up first. Or you might even want to make a system image, and create a recovery key before the upgrade. The upgrade process is relatively simple, but there’s always a chance of something going awry.

Unless you’re particular about how you want your Windows settings, just go with Express Settings during setup (versus custom settings). It allows you to get up and running a lot faster, and if you want to make any adjustments, you can do that later.

YOU may want to use custom settings ,instead of express settings .

back up music, photos, videos, to usb or dvdr discs before you stard the w10 install process .

    Thanks riclad.

I havent much on the PC at the moment which is running on Windows 8.1 so back up shouldnt be an issue.

The 8.1 interface had me completely lost and one of my young lads was able to download and install something or other that left the desktop and the different functions looking like XP or vista which I have been used to over the years. I wonder can the same be done again with W10? - i.e. being able to install something that will make it look and feel like XP/Vista or even W7?

I backed up all my Folders to a Hard Drive before I upgraded to Win10 from Win8.1 last August, I had absolutely no problems whatsoever doing so, my only problem is with the Updates which I have posted above. Win10 operates quite like 8.1 in my opinion, I had no problem in using either...coming from Win7. I dont know when the free upgrade offer ends, maybe July?, it might be prudent to wait a little longer before taking the plunge as the Updates problems may be solved shortly.
