Hello all, I hope you don't mind me joining you. I've been dropping by on and off and reading this board since early september (I too am pregnant, 11 weeks and due on April 30th) but I didn't want to join and post too early just incase I was wrong and it was just wind. :D
But now I think I need to talk to others that are in the same boat. My scan is booked for the 21st of October so not long to wait now. I have experienced the usual pregnancy symptoms (nausea, tiredness, crampyness, backaches)but I am eating well & gaining weight. We moved house a few days after I found out I was pregnant which was a major stress to me and my husband, so we are hoping that everything is fine and that the scan gives us the confirmation and reassurance we both really need right now. 1. That everything is ok healthwise. 2. that there is only one baby in there coz my belly is fairly big for 11 wks! We are counting down the days! I also quit smoking when I found out which brings it's own set of emotional swings and roundabouts. But my mood swings and emotions all over the place. I've been crying alot over the fact that my mum isn't just down the road for me to go and see, phone calls are ok but it's just not the same. So if I want to go and see her I have to book a flight. My husband and his family are lovely, but there are somethings that I would only feel comfortable talking to my mum about. On top of all that I am somewhat nervous of the Irish maternity system and unaware of what will happen and how things work, not sure if I've chosen the right hospital and generally worried about everything. I've been told not to stress too much, it's not good for jnr, but I just can't help it.

I got bad news on one twin today, he/she stopped growing. :( Other twin doing great - in other circumstances I would be on a high at how well, but today was a shock for us.

I posted over in the TTC thread about it. http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=74893563&postcount=2906
I didnt want to write it all here - some of you may not feel up to reading, but the link is there if you do.

    Hugs to all.

Neyite, Custard Cream, I don't know what to say, there is never the right words for events like this and I can't even imagine putting myself in your shoes as that alone would be too painful. Please take care x

Congratulations on your pregnancy Inky77 :) I think your concerns are perfectly normal and one's we all have to a certain extent like will the hospital we attend be good/will the staff take good care of you and your baby.

I think the best bet is to have a good chat with the midwife on your booking in appointment.
Write a list of all the queries you have and hopefully that will give you some peace of mind.

It is hard when your family are not nearby, my parents live a 2 hour drive away. I know its not the same as having to get flights home, but sometimes it can feel like 20 hours away.

Could you book a visit to see your mum in a few weeks time? maybe have a private scan with her at home if that was possible to share the experience with her?

Good on you giving up the cigarettes too, it can't be easy but definitely the best choice for baby.
The best of luck in your pregnancy :)

Hi Inky77, I am a first timer too, and totally understand your concerns - I am 10 weeks tomorrow and was shocked to find out yesterday that my first HSE scan is not until 1st december - a full two months away. I will be 16 -17 weeks then. And I think that is considered early here in Galway - due to the fact I'm 36, and my GP notified them it was a multiple pregnancy (I found out during the week its no longer the case :() and I also have an existing hormonal condition that means I'm supposed to be monitored closer during pregnancy. I suppose getting scanned a whole 4 weeks earlier than other mothers is their idea of close monitoring - gah!

I think in the early stages of pregnancy, we are on our own, but by all accounts, the care you do recieve when you get it, is very good.

Can you set up Skype for you and your mum to chat? I know its not the same as having her here, but its far nicer than being on the phone. I havent been able to tell my mum because she simply cannot keep a secret, so I have to wait until 12 weeks so if she does blab to people, it was around the time I would be going "public".

I can heartily recommend the Paul McKenna Stop Smoking hypnosis - I quit during a very stressful time in my life, and the CD made it so easy. I had tried all methods prior to that and failed. You dont go into a huge trance or anything, you feel aware the whole time, just nice and relaxed. It might also help your stress levels overall.

Neyite, would they not give you more frequent scans now in light of your recent loss?

I couldn't get over how long I'd to wait for my first scan last time, I was 22 weeks before my first appointment & scan!
The letter my GP sent to the hospital 'went missing' 3 times! I ended up going for an early (private) scan for peace of mind instead.

I think I will ring them on Monday. I got the letter friday evening when I opened the post after work, so they were long gone from the office I'd say.

Jesus Neyite, I can't believe you have to wait that long considering your situation. I'm appalled at the wait for ultrasound scans in public hospitals in this country. I know of a girl who went into hospital in Sligo at 30 weeks with quite heavy bleeding, and was waiting FIVE days for a scan. A girl I used to work with went in last monday, she was 23 weeks gone and had bleeding and other problems. They didn't check her properly, told her to go home. She went back in later that night and was told she was in premature labour, and there was nothing they could do.

I've studied medical physics and I know that ultrasound machines are far from the most sophisticated pieces of equipment available. Easy to operate, not anywhere near as costly as other machines to run. Even using an old machine to do a quick scan and check the vitals would make a huge difference to the quality of care some people recieve. It just makes me so angry that people who need to be monitored more closely and people who have unexpected problems have to wait for scans. If theres a problem, a scan should be conducted straightaway. In this day and age, I don't think thats a lot to ask.

It just really riles me up (plus im a bit hormonal today) :o

    /rant

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,880 ✭✭✭caprilicious

Shuwaaah that is really interesting to know about the ultrasounds, I wonder why it is then that the hospital will always tell you its too dear for them to scan more frequently

I had a scan in the early pregnancy unit at 8 weeks and asked when my next would be, I was told probably not til 25 weeks I think she said.
I didn't query why, the midwife followed up by saying it was too expensive for them to scan any more frequently.

What I don't understand is they have 2 ultrasounds between 4 consultation rooms, the thing is plugged in/powered on every time I'm there, so with the exception of experienced staff to use it (which they do have as each time I was scanned my a different member of staff, all which attend all the appts).
It doesn't make sense to me.

Anyway there's me on a rant there too! Have the hormones settled down yet? :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,302 ✭✭✭Cadyboo

I totally agree about the ultrasounds. I personally think they should have them in gps surgeries instead of the fetal dopplers. How many times have women gone to gp, couldn't find a hb, stress and panic follows and a trip to er to get things checked? Costs a lot more for hundreds of people a week probably to go to the hosp than it would to get a machine in the gps. Ok rant over!!:p

wow cant believe that about the scans. I am due my first scan on thurs and i will be 13+5 and thought that i'd have it sooner. obviously that is early compared to some.

Best of Luck with the scan Suucee. I'm pretty early too for mine, i'll be 12+6days when I have my first one in the Rotunda.
It would be brilliant to have them in GP's, it's such a scary time for mothers and you do worry all that time so being able to go to the doctors would put our mind at ease instead of waiting weeks and weeks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,937 ✭✭✭implausible

I'd imagine the price is more to do with paying staff and the current baby boom than the cost of the machine. Any time I've been for one to the hospital, it's been absolutely jammers and that's with just starting scans at 20 weeks+

Some GPs do have a scanner. I'm lucky, mine does and I get a scan at every check-up. I'm sure if a medium-size surgery in Donegal can have one, there must be doctors in the bigger cities who have them.

12 weeks now and still feeling bloated and a bit icky in the evenings - I had none of this with my wee buck, bleugh....

Thanks for the good advice. To be honest I came back the day after I first posted, saw Custards post and then Neyite's and I don't think I'm able for this board. I worry and I get upset too easily. Maybe when my hormones are more stable I will return to the board but until then, goodbye and good luck everyone!

Best of luck with the scan Suucee!
I'm 13+1 now, morning sickness has really eased over the last week thank god, feeling a lot better, albeit more hormonal. Was at my gp yesterday and he was able to find the heartbeat with the Doppler, such a relief. Going for a private scan on Monday cos my partner can't bear to wait two months for a scan, looking forward to it, I'll actually be able to see the baby properly this time hopefully! Hope everyone's doing well :D

Thanks all it was amazing. Baby so lively looked like he/she was waving at us. Still on cloud nine. Sickness seems to be easing also was sick twice today but think it was nerves as was fine the past two days . So hungry dow past few days anyone else like this.. Tried to attatch a pic but not sure if it worked.

    Awwwww!!!! dote :)

Glad your scan went well Succee. I have been starving for weeks now. I get hunger pangs at about 30 mins before each meal. I had to have a subway on the way home last night because I thought I would waste away on my 30 min commute :o

Aw Suucee that's amazing! so delighted your scan went so well!
Brill that the morning sickness is starting to ease :)

Shuwaaah I'm delighted to hear your sickness is easing off too, its so nice getting an appetite back again isn't it?
Isn't it fantastic hearing the little heartbeat with the doppler?
I was in the GP's Monday and wow it made things so much more real hearing how strong the heartbeat was!

I'm over the moon that the tiredness is FINALLY starting to ease as is the sickness, I finally feel human for about the first time in 2+ months!!

I also got my booking appointment - for this Monday! I'm really suprised as I'll be 14+2 then, I thought I'd at least have to wait another 3-4 weeks, not that I'm complaining!

  • Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 25,947 Mod ✭✭✭✭Neyite

    11 weeks today :)

One trimester nearly done and only a couple of weeks until I can announce it officially.

The OH wants to wait a couple of weeks after the 12 week mark, so I will hold my tongue to abide by his wishes. He's gotta get something in exchange for doing everything around the house. The only housework I do is make dinner, the rest I get told to sit down and put my feet up. It will wear off in a few weeks I'd say but I'm enjoying it while it lasts.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,816 ✭✭✭Suucee

hope your scan went well caprilicoius and Shuwaaah. And great the sickness easing too. Mind you I was bad on fri with a head ache. one of does that you nearly have to hold your head while walking up the stairs but ended up getting sick and having a nose bleed and head ache was gone and i felt grand afterwards and grand ever since.
Neyite my OH madde me wait too until i had my scan but had already told our parents and they couldnt keep it too quiet so when i did make it official there wasnt many that didnt know.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,880 ✭✭✭caprilicious

Aw wow Neyite can't believe you're nearly there at the 12 week mark, woohoo!!
I bet you can't wait to announce your good news :)

Thanks Suucee, scan went brill! They've changed the system in the hospital.
Previously, you would arrive first in the clinic, but the files for the next 20 people that arrived would be put on top of yours so last in would get seen first, very frustrating!

This time I had just sat down and I was called to go in. The midwife was lovely and very thorough going through my details.
The Obstetrician was lovely too, spent quite a while doing the scan & was laughing at baby waving at us :D
It was amazing seeing the tiny little hand, all the teeny little fingers so perfectly formed :)

I'm not back for another 10 weeks so at least I got my fix with a scan :)

Suucee that sounds like a headache and a half :( hope you don't get any more of those

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,302 ✭✭✭Cadyboo

Hi everyone, glad to hear everyones scans are going well. I am now 15 weeks! Can't believe it. Got the flu jab today and got to hear babys heartbeat, thank god as couldn't hear it two weeks ago.
Have any of you any ideas on which buggy you are thinking of getting? Really want to know which I want so I can know the cost. So hard to choose!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,816 ✭✭✭Suucee

Great that your scan went well Cap. I was the same laughing away at the baby waving. Its amazing. I got copies made of my scan and framed them and carry one around in my hand bag to show it off.

Cadyboo i was actually just looking at buggies yesterday and picked one. It was on babyaccessoriesireland.ie they have a huge selection and good prices. The one i like is a Bexa 3 in 1 travel system its a 3 wheeler with big wheels and it is €379 loads of different colours but i like the fashion black.

So sorry you are going through so much - hopefully you will be out of the woods soon. I dont know if you will get a scan or not, maybe someone who has attended bray before can let you know.

As for me, I got my endo visit, which when I got there they combined into my first ante-natal visit :D I got all booked in by a midwife, got to see the endo, and I got a scan so got to see baba :D:D. Was warned to book in for my classes, cos they fill up fast. I'm only 11+4! Decided we are gonna announce it at 14 weeks. Now have to dream up cute ways to tell my sisters and mum.

Great day all around. Even my supervisor being a nag couldnt take the smile off my face.

KarKar10, congratulations! Hopefully after the tough start you will have an easy pregnancy :)

Neyite that's fantastic that your first appointment went so well!!! delighted to hear you got a scan too! not long now til you tell the family, so exciting!

Cadyboo, how are you after the flu jab? were you sick after it at all? I never in my life considered getting it, though heard them recommending that pregnant women get it so starting to consider it now.

Hope everyone is keeping well :)

Well its just the tiredness now really but I can cope with that.

Im 18 weeks on sunday and im still waiting on the tiredness to bugger off  but yes the sickness did disappear, so im now starting to enjoy the pregnancy, since my heads out of the toilet bowl!!!

However this weekend, will be mostly made of SLEEEEEEEEEEP!!!!! Dvd's and sleep, and I cant wait!!!!!!!!!

I feel like im very far gone, compared to everyone else here, although i am due april 1st haha..

    Whats everyones EDD??

    April 1st 2012 :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 814 ✭✭✭saggycaggy

Yeah i'm hoping to get plenty of rest too, we are visiting my auntie in Galway so she can take care of our daughter for a while :P!!

I should get my EDD from the hospital on Thursday next but working it out I think im due 10th of May. I hope I don't go too over though-I have a friends wedding on the 6th June!!

  • Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 25,947 Mod ✭✭✭✭Neyite

My EDD is 12 May 2012.

I also happen to be a bridesmaid the week before. :D. So hoping I go over my EDD. Would rather I be seen as "God that pregnant wan is massive" rather than "God that fat wan is massive". Plus I save on a sitter, and dont have to worry about bleeding or milk staining. Its going to be a very pale colour  (I am right in thinking that we bleed for a couple of weeks after birth?)

The bride is worrying that my waters will break in the church. Have told her I will try to hold off until the dj puts on rock the boat.:p

    Interesting pregnancy fact:
If baby is not getting sufficient omega 3 & 6 from mammys diet, the body diverts it from our brain to the uterus. Thats why we get forgetful and get baby brain.

I've been stupider than normal lately. I was in dunnes yesterday evening and could I feck remember the ingredients for a stir-fry? Doh!:p

i feel your pain, i went to the shop for milk last night, got to the shop, and had to ring himself and ask him what i was there for, sometimes i dont know how i brush my teeth and drive to work without killing myself

my mate bled for 6 weeks after birth  dunno was that an extreme case tho.. sounds horrible... months of no period, then WHAM... as if giving birth and adjusting to having a baby isnt going to be hard enough

Im 18 weeks on sunday and im still waiting on the tiredness to bugger off  but yes the sickness did disappear, so im now starting to enjoy the pregnancy, since my heads out of the toilet bowl!!!
I feel like im very far gone, compared to everyone else here, although i am due april 1st haha..

    Whats everyones EDD??

    April 1st 2012 :D

18 weeks today and I feel the same, I could sleep all day and still not feel rested enough, I due 30th March though going by other family members I think I will be overdue so most likely it will be April by the time I get to meet my baba :)

Yep after you have the joy of pushing out something the size of a football out of a hole the size of an apple you then get the joy of bleeding for a week or two after....yaaay :p

Speaking of baby brain, I was in the shower the other day and I washed my hair with my conditioner and conditioned it with the shampoo, couldn't figure out why my hair was like straw for the rest of the day, then I copped on

Back is absolutely killing me since yesterday. I had a bit of a dodgy back pre-pregnancy but was feeling quite smug about getting away without any back pain, that was until yesterday when it hit with avengance :( I'm walking around like I'm about 70, not to mention when I try to bend over to pick something up!!

Neyite that's really interesting about the Omega deficiency being responsible for 'baby brain'. I now have a valid medical explanation for my recent stupid moments :D

Ms2011 I feel your pain with the sore back, mine has started to act up too the past week I'm like a 70 year old hobbling around in work sometimes!

We must get a list going, our roll call of who is due when :)

Copy & paste the list to add your own EDD :)

Ooooh, this sounds terrible but I was hoping to be a bit late. My mum, my brother and I were all born on the 12th of may, I thought it would be so cool if baby was due then as well. My original EDD was the 27th of April, now it's been revised back to the 24th. So its looking less likely I'll be having a birthday baby :o

    Hey all.

Glad to hear everyone is doing so well lately. I was really busy in work last week so havent got on in a while. I'm the same with the tiredness but it doesnt help that i get up twice a night to go loo and then have trouble getting back to sleep and then cant get up the next morning. I suppose this is only the start really.
Have had a bit of back ache also especially after sitting for a while. Find hot water bottle brill.

Seems there is a few of us due around the same time.

Also we have decided to get a 3D/4D scan. And think we are going to find out the sex. Everyone thinks were mad to find out but we cant wait. and want to be able to buy my blues or pinks.
Has anyone else thought about this..

The 3/4D scans are worth every cent....I had one when pregnant with my daughter and you could see from them she was the image of her daddy & the cute little button nose on her. I loved it :)
I found out the sex then too and would love to again this time.

I'm not going to find out the gender if possible. Mainly because I like surprises and so does himself.

I'm not getting a 3d scan either. A friend who works with radiation and knows quite a bit about x-rays says that some doctors remain unconvinced that they are not harmful as they use so much more soundwaves to create such a detailed image. As I really trust her judgement and she knows her stuff in that department I am not going to do it. Maybe I would change my mind if I really wanted one but I dont really mind.

Got through a weekend with my mum and sister without letting the cat out of the bag with my mum. I'm getting good at this secrets lark! Two more weeks and we are telling people - I will be 14 weeks then.
