Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Oh my God, is there anybody left in Ireland?! I think the entire population is here this week- and the Alive Outside crew haven't even hit the slopes yet! Lock n load Soll, it's gonna be a big 'un :-)

Photos from the past few days in Soll. Pistes still in great nick, despite the recent need for sunscreen! :-)

The valleys are green, but the mountains are white! :-)

When does the season end in Soll, Fanny? Might be able to fit one more quick trip in before everything melts, and am looking for ideas.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,300 ✭✭✭Gatica

Don't know in Soll, but I get the impression it's lower down than other resorts. You may want to check out somewhere that is higher up and is more likely to have snow late in the season. I was disappointed lower altitudes for where we were in Brixen had practically no snow.

Season ends March 30th Cormee- come on over for Paddy's!! It's shaping up to be a great weekend :-)

Too soon, unfortunately, Fanny. We only decided in the last few days to get a final trip in, so it will take a bit of organising. Looks like it will be Chamonix, which I wouldn't be the biggest fan of.

    Still, snow is snow. :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,230 ✭✭✭fannymagee

Exactly! Snow is snow, and hopefully you'll get plenty in Chamonix!

On piste conditions are still great in Soll, but it's been very sunny the past week, so who knows how it'll pan out between now and end of season. The on-piste snow will hold, but the scenery has turned proper green so hopefully you'll see a lot more white in Chamonix. The upside is the Skiwelt will be deserted after this weekend, happy days!

Gatica poor Brixen always gets the brunt of the sun when it shines! Soll is very lucky to be north-facing so is a lot better protected, it makes a big difference in conditions. It's unfortunate, it's such a great skiing area otherwise :-)

Cormee check out this pic from the Pistenbully Parade last weekend- I'm trying to get the lovely new green one roped into the Paddy's Day parade on Monday- every bit of green needs to be used!! Lol ;-)

I'm just back from morzine, 1st ever time skiing. Huge amount of slopes(of which I only got in a fraction of them). However I will admit morzine is quite expensive, so maybe Soll would be a better choice next time, everyone in Morzine did say its the best place for skiing though, what would any of yous say? I'll admit I'd be more going for the skiing than drinking, I ended up skiing every day from 9 till 6, and was too shattered to head out proper ha.

Well fanny how did the last few days go in soll??,u must of been partying hard as we've had no updates for a few days!!!.all the hard work keeping pistes good for winter seem to be comming unstuck, temps gone very high and lots of green on webcams, here's hoping for one last big dump!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,230 ✭✭✭fannymagee

Ohhh lorrddd, what a week!! Sorry for lack of updates- I tried, but it seems wifi is not my friend at the mo, and I haven't had a chance to turn in the PC all week!

Anyway yes, end of season is upon us. The low slopes are no fun at the moment, but conditions above the middle stations are still great in the early mornings, but not so nice come lunchtime. Which poses a problem over Paddy's weekend because the hangovers are getting in the way of the early morning skiing lol ;)

The ski school has stopped touring out of Soll, because the conditions here are considerably better than the sunnier sides of the mountain. It's crazy windy at the moment too, 60kph winds today so the gondel trips are interesting!

Anyway, Paddy's Day here was fantastic. Beautiful weather, everyone in flying form and a great party day all round on the mountain!! The greening couldn't happen on Saturday because night skiing was cancelled because of the wind. I have pics of it from Friday night though, I'll post them later- it's hard to upload pics from the phone but I'll give it another try..!

The rope race on Saturday was a fantastic day too, so it's been a hectic, party-filled few days all round! :)

Here's a pic from this morning, first thing. Sloes in beautiful condition :)

Dzer I'm sorry, there was just too much skiing to be done/ fun to be had!! I promise I'll post them ASAP. Mahoney_j, Soll missed you!! You'll have to get planning next year ;)

Rope Race last Saturday- great day!! Although racing in ponchos & sombreros in 60kph winds was prob not the best from a health and safety perspective, lol ;-)

Is that the best snow of the season? Was in Mayrhofen on the first week of Jan and the snow in village had melted already.

Yeah, it's been coming & going but this is the heaviest dump in the shortest time. It had to come eventually, so at least there's a few days left before the lifts close to take advantage of it! Would have been great if it came just a few days earlier so the Paddy's Weekers could have had some to go along with the beautiful sunshine! :)

Yes, two flights per day to Munich AlternateID! And probably quite reasonable at the moment, given that we're between seasons now ;-)

I never ended up getting away again this season! Looking at all this snow porn you have been putting up lately has been depressing!

On the plus side my friends who went to Ishcgl didn't have the best of conditions except for the last 2 days and spent most of the time on the piss so I don't feel i missed out to much although looking at their photos the mountains do look unreal!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,230 ✭✭✭fannymagee

Aww that's their snow Karma for going without you SpaceCowboy!! You'll just have to come to Soll next year, honest to God it's just a great place all round, and for half what you'd pay in Ischgl :-)

I'm hoping to head to Canada for a season based on whether i manage to grab one of the visas in the next round! if that's the case i will be strapped to my board as much as i can in balls deep powder for 6 months! :) if not i would imagine Soll will definitely be on the list for next season! Although for an xmas trip i think i'll aim higher just be sure of snow after the dismal conditions we had on our trip xmas just gone!

Pics look great!! I'd imagine it's pretty quiet and a lot of it untracked. Jealous!! One last trip in Scotland coming up, fingers crossed. Worse case scenario we'll hit the indoor slopes for a few hours.

Where's the 2nd pic above from?

Mostly untracked Steveire!! There are still a few lucky tourists around (including at least 3 Irish in skischool- I always wonder if its anyone from here!!) So all the off-piste is there for the locals. Happy days!

The second pic above (if you mean the one with the snaky tracks?!) is the bottom of the Innekeat, taken from the top of the Siller-Keat lift. It's a great off-piste run, but rocky & avalanche prone so be careful if you venture into it!

Enjoy Scotland, hope you get good conditions- will you be back next to Soll next season?!

Haha yeah- straight back down to the button lifts for me!!

I get terrible phone paranoia up there- one wrong move (with gloves & cold hands etc) and it's bye bye iPhone. (also, one wrong move and it could be bye bye life!!) There's been some terrible accidents on that slope, I get jelly legs just thinking about some of them...

Ugh!! Anyway, how's Chamonix? Are you there yet?!

I could mark x's all over that photo where I've binned it over the years. In fact about 2 or 3 km to the right I got 3 fractures in my wrist and arm. Good times.

Oooh no, really?! Ouch! I've only fallen on that slope once (I'm tempting fate now..!) but I don't plan to repeat it..! It was a very icy morning a few years ago, and thank f@&k the OH was with me! He jammed his skis under my shoulder to stop me & luckily there was no damage done. Gave me the willies though!! Even with him braking for me it still took quite a few seconds to stop- so I avoid it like the plague now when it's icy. Prob silly really, but now it's in my head I just don't want to risk it!! Some poor German woman had a simple fall on it last week & came rattling down full speed from the top as far as the lift completely out cold, head rattling around in her helmet. She was blessed she had it on...
