US Ambassador praises Shannon’s investment role (Clare Herald)

The newly appointed US Ambassador to Ireland Kevin O’Malley has praised Shannon Airport for its key role in supporting the continuing and strong US multi-national presence in the West of Ireland.

Speaking on an official visit to the airport, where he met members of its executive and board, Ambassador O’Malley said that having a vibrant airport on the western seaboard with direct links to the US is critical for shared prosperity between the region and multi-nationals.

He said, “Literally all of the businesses, the US multi-nationals and those from other countries that are situated in this region, need an airport that can service their connectivity requirements.

These are large companies doing a great job in Ireland, employing Irish people and participating in helping both sides of the Atlantic share in a great prosperity. Shannon helps sustain that through its transatlantic services as without them there would be no direct access from the US into the West or South coast of Ireland.

. . . Anything I can do to increase investment and trade between our two countries, I will do. That is very important to me.”

************************************************************

Nice endorsement of Shannon's transatlantic services for US businesses that operate in the western and southern parts of the country by a Missouri man whose grandparents hailed from Westport in Mayo.

from the above article:
The airport had been losing millions, but last year we turned in a profit of €163m
.

... can that be right???

€163m is clearly a typo, €163k would have been about right.

JP McManus confirms return of golf Pro-Am (Limerick Leader)

Last time round Shannon Airport saw a significant increase in business jet traffic during the 2010 JP McManus Invitational Pro-Am at Adare. (Shannon Aviation)

Should be a good opportunity to promote Shannon’s full US preclearance facility for private aircraft.

Why does ba1 and ba3 always fly up towards Dublin then down to Shannon rather than follow the other London flights that pass over Wexford? Is it in case it runs low on fuel?

No. Depends on preferential routings of the day as assigned by Eurocontrol etc etc. ATC fees also differ depending on the route. It seems to route over Strumble then Wexford a fair bit too.

I have never seen ba1 or ba3 ever come to Shannon the Wexford way.

I have never seen that. Unusual.

Still at 2 flights a day and most of them go by Dublin is still unusual

Not unusual at all. Because it's from London city, routing up north and overhead Dublin to shannon, avoids any delays/slots that would be created it they went straight from London city via Wexford to Shannon, as that would take them via heathrow and the western approaches, and busy airspace.

Likewise, shannon to stansted, routinely routes over dublin and down to London from the north, avoiding the same busy airspace around Heathrow and to the west of it.

Its not unusual? If less than 10% of the time it is hardly not unsusal

I meant it's not unusual to fly via dublin

Between them, they ba1 and ba3, have flown over Wexford 3 times in the last 7 days, and over dublin 8 times.

Aer Lingus SNN-USA are not available for booking.
SNN-BOS The fare compare works, but once you select the flight it is listed as full.
SNN-JFK "No low fares were found, up to 14 days either side of your travel dates."

All other Transatlantic flights from dublin and short-haul from shannon are still bookable.

Still not bookable, very strange.

I assume this is if the EC allow it to happen. They are going to be investigating it.

Would expect them back online in a few days.

My understanding of the issue is that a scheme of accelerated capital allowances was made in the in Budget 2012 to kickstart the development of an aviation services centre that would engage in aircraft maintenance, dismantling of aircraft for parts and converting aircraft into freighters, in addition to establishing an international aviation training centre.

It seems that the European Commission took two years to veto this capital allowance where the cost of developing an aviation maintenance hanger would be written off over seven years, compared to usual term of 25 years.

It means that the Irish Government will have to renegotiate with the EU regarding an amendment.

See previous post.

A British Airways (BA215) on route from London Heathrow to Boston has turned back to Shannon this evening (19:00).

**** Update ****

Boston-bound flight diverts back to Shannon due to “suspected technical problem” (The Journal)

“The flight diverted to Shannon purely as a precaution, due to a suspected technical problem,” a BA spokesperson said.

“Engineers have checked the aircraft and there is no problem.”

It’s since taken off again.

The A319 based at Shannon seems to be having a lot of trouble lately. I have seen it being replaced by an a320 three times in the past 30days

EI-DVM (The aer lingus retro lively plane) will be landing in Shannon in about an hour 3:35-3:45 and taking off again at around 5:25.

Can anyone get a picture?

A British Airways (BA48) on route from Seattle to London Heathrow has diverted to Shannon.

It is the very same aircraft (Reg. G-VIIS) that diverted on Friday.

According to the Clare Herald, just 12 months ago, on November 14th 2013, the same jet also made an emergency landing at Shannon after the crew reported smoke on board.

**** Update ****

Same jet diverts to Shannon twice in three days (Clare Herald)

The pilot requested permission to divert to Shannon after reporting a problem with an engine which they confirmed they had shut down.

The A319 lasted a total of 1 flight today before having to bring the a320 back. What is going on with that plane?

Does it go tech each time or is it replaced due to pax numbers? The 320 has 30 more seats.

A flight from LHR-SNN was cancelled today and they are often delayed lately so I'd say it goes to tech.
