The start of the game is much harder than the end, once you've 6 or 7 hours down your hit your stride and you'll be frying, that's when the game becomes really really great.

Thats what I was kind of hoping for alright.

Getting used to how your character moves etc isn't something these days that we often have to learn so it's frustrating but dare I say refreshingly frustrating.

It'll be interesting to see how I'm fairing in another 4-5 hours.

Now it's just getting the time to play the blooming game.

The best advice I could give to a new player is to spend all your souls ASAP. I got stuck in plenty of times because I didn't level up and lost my souls repeatedly. This meant going back to the bonfire and starting the whole section over again, as long I level'd up.

I'm going to look at this end of things tonight when I hope to get a good 2 hour run at it. I was kinda just fixated with killing that first boss so I felt a bit better about myself. Lol

if you can get to the bonfire in the undead burg, that'll be a good start for you, you'll be able to do farming runs on those low level lads and give yourself a but of a leg up. They're also the easiest enemies to learn how to parry, block etc. they'll still be well able to kill you mind, so don't underestimate them.

Ok so I think i did something silly last night. I hit the merchant near undeadsburg it seems (accidentily, I thought he was an enemy) he then became hostile and even with resetting bonfires he was still hostile so I killed him in frustration. (I'd had a few beers, lol)

Now I can't buy bombs so I'm finding the Taurus boss tough.

I'll get another go at it later and reckon I can do it by running up the ladder and plunging at him, wash and repeat if I can manage to get up the ladder before he hits me. I couldn't time this last night due to the aforementioned beer.

Anyway am I screwed or is it possible still?

    Cheers

you can beat the game naked, using only your fists so yeah it's possible still. the undead merchant sells a few handy things for the early game but anything he sells that's relevant for later in the game I'm pretty sure you can pick up from anothe merchant down the way

Ok thanks for that. I was the last part I was most worried about tbh. I assumed it was possible to beat the Taurus demon without him but I read somewhere online he sold a bow that would be useful. If you can buy most other stuff later then that's grand. Cheers.

Now note to self. Don't play dark souls half cut as it is easy to mistake important merchants for enemies.

I'm 7 hours into the game and only at the 2nd boss. For €5 on steam sale I think I'm gonna get my monies worth here.

    Loving it so far.

I've been levelling up strength and vitality so far.

Any stats that I shouldn't ignore? I was just thinking more health and power made sense.

it depends on the weapons you want to use tbh. generally the heavier slower swinging weapons benefit from strength, so you'd level strength and vitality so you can power the swing into your opponent and have enough health to handle their counter attack while you recover

faster lower damage weapons tend to be Dex weapons, so you'd level up dex and endurance so you can nip in swing swing swing and then have enough stamina left to nip out without being hit

you know how to check your weapons and equipments stat requirements yeah? the best way to do it is to settle on a weapon (or two) that you like and level up to get the best out of them. on the topic of stats to ignore, never level resistance. just don't. it's useless. waste of souls.

oh, and im sure this will make you feel better, taurus is the first boss. no one counts the asylum demon :p

I haven't paid too much attention to the stats yet but will now.

as you upgrade your weapons, the stat scaling can change. so a sword that's E scaling for strength at +1 can become +B strength scaling by level 15. so even if you didn't level up strength all game by the time the weapon was +15 your strength would be adding even more damage power to it (on top of the general damage increase it gets from being upgraded). It's not very intuitive, the game kind of is designed to be played several times, learning a bit more about it each time.

oh, one tip actually. prioritise upgrading your weapons, not levelling up. dark souls isn't like most other rpg-like games, it's your equipment that matters the most not your stats.

Nah it really isn't and you feel the shortcomings of development through the murky texture design and questionable linearity but it is still great fun and the multiplayer is a lot better.

tying iframes while rolling to a stat was such a horrible horrible decision.

Just finished the Taurus deamon by climbing the ladder and jump off ledge stabbing him a few times.

Seriously though heart in mouth as I was at my last bit of energy as I hit him with an axe to the ankle! Lol

Seriously some buzz when you kill the bosses.

I spoke to soon, my laptop just froze! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!! Can't believe it.

Thankfully didn't have to do the boss again but then died before a new bonfire. Ugh.

the game saves itself all the time, you won't have to fight the boss again and your souls will be in the area you were when the game crashed (or when the game saved a short while before that)

    little hint here

be sure and have a good look around under the bridge where the dragon was. one of the doorways there has a handy little shortcut. closer to the stairs you use to go under the bridge.

Lads bit new to the dark souls games and bought and completed dark souls II, really great game. So should I buy Bloodborne now or try to get Dark Souls I (Is it available for ps4?).

Still have the ps3 for Dark souls I if required:)

    Dark Souls isn't on PS4

If you've a PS3, Dark Souls, if not, Bloodborne.

Both fantastic games, and a step up from Dark Souls 2

I got dark souls 2 SOTFS for my ps4 and I cant seem to enjoy it at all. the combat system is so dull and clunky. all big mobs like the giant knights at heides tower are crap hard to kill without losing alot of health. their reach is crazy and the roll dodge isnt as evasive as one would hope. Can these be parried with a shield or something to make them alot easier? all attempts so far result in them smiting my face up the nether of my arse

So yeah the fight consists of dancing around for ages and going for a poke and then roll away, miracle if i dont get hit and takes bloomin ages :(

I think playing bloodborne and the perfectness of that game ruined my expectations of this game :(

Counter-clockwise circling makes the attacks of the sword and shield and greatsword knights miss. When they finish their combo hit them in the back, preferably with a mace.

The two greatclub knights are a little trickier. You have to bait the over head attack close in once it lands and hit then back out of range. Or use a ranged attack

This little snippet means its his opinion, evidently yours is different

Dark Souls one would be my pick of the bunch, with Bloodborne probably being my least favourite. I'd rate it higher than Dark 2 in a technical sense, I didn't like it as much though

DS2 has a good few enemies that the developers have tried to make tricky but end up annoying. The giant knights are a good example for the reasons you've stated.

Dark souls looks like the sequel to Dark souls 2 , its that much superior. What I dont like about DS 2 is that the graphics make all the areas look the same

If you're coming from Bloodborne you'll have the wrong idea about the Souls games. First of all, combat is SLOW. You need to draw out enemies one at a time and retreat when needed. Secondly, the game is far more defence oriented than BB, you need to learn to avoid easy opportunities to hit someone if it means you're vulnerable to getting hit back.
Bloodborne is also a fair bit easier than DS games, imo.

Bait the knights into attacking, roll away, nip in and catch them while they're stuck in the attack animation.
You can't parry their attacks, you can block them, but you really shouldn't be standing in front of them when they're swinging their swords.

One you learn the pace of the game, it becomes a lot easier. You will die so many times at the start though.

Dark souls 2 was my first introduction to this franchise and what a game! Over 100hrs of my life gone like that! Seems to get a lot of negative comments here from Demon Souls/Dark Souls veterans and for the life of me I cannot understand why. So I went and got my hands on Dark Souls for ps3 and its just as good. I am 20hrs in at level 38 and rang the 2nd bell to open Sens Fortress. Long way to go yet.

Question for the experts: At this stage it's taking roughly 10000 souls now to upgrade attributes. Do you concentrate on upgrading weapons and magic more than character?

Weapons definitely, it's easier to fight at level 20 with a +15 weapon than at level 70 with a base weapon

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,951 ✭✭✭✭2smiggy

ya definitely get a good weapon upgraded. if you are after ringing second bell, you are not far from a blacksmith that can make 'boss weapons' , you could also look up where you can find the amber for the +15 weapons. only thing i will say is spend the large titanite slabs (long time since i played ) carefully, as i think they are limited per play through. I up graded a few stupid weapons fully :o

Depends what weapons you want to use, if you go dex you want like 12-14 Str for the Uchigatana or Balder Side Sword

But yeah one handing a halberd is generally a crappy idea in general I would think

Guys, does the prepare to die edition have the dlc on the disk or just a code? Are saves compatible between this and a digital version of the original?
I just played ng+ upto O&S (OMFG!) and have decided to restart ng and play the dlc soon.

DLC is on the disc, not sure about saves working though. I would 'assume' it would work using a standard version save going into the prepare to die edition

O&S still making me **** bricks when I meet them :(

The Dark Wood Grain Ring takes a lot of getting used to as well.

If we've any regulars, how did you find the Balder Side Sword? The damage for me is prertty lacklustre at +14 with 40 Dex, not getting it.

In other news, the Cheat Engine on PC is a glorious invention, it saves farming Souls and Titanite so much. Waiting until you can buy the item or are in a place to farm it before cheating it in keeps balance, but saves having to farm for hours for Chunks and Slabs from Darkwraiths.

Strongly considering doing a Hyper Aggression and then a Random Weapon (new weapon every seven seconds) run, and possibly a mix of both.

    And a true hybrid.

    And a fist wizard.

This cheat engine is making me so much more arsed to play.

Had a few fantastic moments against Twinks, parry a hollow when I'm invaded so he sees me do 200 dmg or something, thinks he's in for an easy run, switch to Unarmed and hit him with 14,000 dmg on full Havel's :pac: Bastards.

The BSS is more about the move set than the damage. Just buff it and the flat damage bonus is per hit so DPS evens it out with the heavy hitters.

Have you tried a DEX/INT stealth build? Fog Ring/Hidden body and Slumbering Dragon Ring/Hush with a fast weapon buffed with Great Magic Weapon. Had great craic with that on my last run through DkS and it really makes for a different playstyle. Am doing it for my first run in DkS3 I enjoyed it so much.

I've been terribly boring in this game, probably 4-5 Uchi runs, half a sorcerer run, half a miracle run (hate Fth builds), have done a SL1, a two handed only, BBS is almost finished and i think I've done a str run
