Carlow is finally getting a theatre late next year. All they need now is the hurling team and the strip club and their dreams will all come true.

On another note, did anyone see the article in the People Property section yesterday about MacDonagh Junction being nearly full, retail wise? Now, I'm not doubting this but I haven't seen any sign of this being the case when I've been over there. Granted, I haven't been there in a few weeks but have they managed to fill up most of the empty spaces?

The guy only told us when its opening. They were wheeling in the arcades in this morning [They wheeled in a huge one that I believe is a flight simulator or something like that.] I believe they have soda and sweets vending machines. They put in alot of counters so an eatery section could be possible.

Dunnes have taken the entire buzz out the shopping experience in Mc Donagh. I feel the local kilkenny people rebelled against the centre when Dunnes took up occupancy when at a time they had two other outlets in the town. They just done it to keep Tesco out. In the Kilkenny People this week the management state that the centre is 80% "let". Its one year on and the mix of retail shops is crap. Its like more of the same and duplication of similar retail business in the centre ie bookshops, coffee shops smoothie bars etc.

    So I say BRING ON CITYMART // TESCO // M & S

    KilkennY needs it BADLY.

The places to eat are ALL rubbish with the exception of Eddie Rocketts.
And the Bookshop is rubbish, and in the wrong location. What would have wrong with an Easons, thats a shop I really like and is well laid out.

Bowling Centre open but even better the new kids play place beside Dunnes. heaven for the likes of me and their Santa is cheaper than the other one down town and a much better set up. Fair play to them. have gone down to the bowling yet with trolly full of groceries and two small ones ha ha

    Thanks.........missed that

I'm getting annoyed at the people who work in those stalls in the middle of the centre though. They're worse than chuggers. Every time I walk past, they're in my face trying to flog me things. So...if any of you idiots are reading....Helloooo - if someone's walking past you, practically stuck to the plate glass windows of the shops in the centre, it doesn't mean that we're playing hard to get. We're trying to avoid you so that you don't try to sell us your stupid smelly stuff

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,810 ✭✭✭ergonomics

Just stare straight ahead and don't slow down. If you try and avoid yourself by sticking to the walls that'll make them notice you. I work up there and they used to always be at me until one evening when I was leaving. One of the toy stalls flew a helicopter straight at my co-worker and I. I calmly told him that if he did it again I would be going straight to security and would have him fired.

They are really annoying but at the same time I think they're a good idea as the shopping centre feels much more full now.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,442 ✭✭✭Firetrap

I do stare straight ahead and walk fast. But the feckers still come at me. Like you, I agree that it's great that they're there but I wish they'd lay off the hard-sell.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,484 ✭✭✭✭Stephen

Argh, hate those guys. I was walking past minding my own business when one of them tried the hard sell on me. Told him I wasn't interested and kept walking. Didn't stop him trying again and again though :/

I notice they've finally started to fit out the Tom Tailor shop.

Does anyone know what the old car is there at the moment?
I've not seen it, but have been told that the back of it looks like a boat.

NOt another clothes shop?! How many clothes shops does one shopping centre need? The place has really died since xmas prolly becasue the last thing people spend money on in a recession is ... Clothes. And now with Zavvi looking on the rocks there will be even less diversity in there. They really should have had M&S as the anchor. At least then it would have attracted the sort of people who would shop in the other overpriced designer outlets.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,365 ✭✭✭spoonbadger

    Random fact....

There's a coffee shop in macdonough, directly opposite from dunnes. There's a guy in there (looks latin, longish hair) that makes the best moccha in Kilkenny.

    Random,i know :D.

I 100% agree with you. I lived in Dublin a long time before moving to KK last year and have to say I miss M&S. There are certain things they do really well and I think you are right - it would have bought in the crowds.

Ah well.... one can dream :)

If they can get M&S and/or Tesco I'd say they'll do fairly well. Yet-another-Dunnes-Stores isn't any great unique selling point for MacDonagh Juntion!

Tesco didnt want to go into Mc Donagh Junction. It was too small for their liking and logistics.

    Game possibly?
Game what? like GameStop? (enough demand?)
or games as in arcades? (That would attract to much of the wrong crowd!)

I think they meant the shop which has the simple title, Game.

I actually think its a disappointing shopping center. It hasn't got a lot in it. Its huge, lots of open space with several shops and a few big names. I felt they didn't use the space wisely and it could have been a lot better if the designers did a better job of the units and the space.

Then again, its a lot better then Dungarvans "shopping center" which is a waste of space tbh!

Oh and is it definate Zavvi are going? If so when and is there any decent sale on?

I'd say Zaavi will be gone in the next couple of days. Everyone I've spoken to has said the sale is amazing but I think it's a scam. My boyfriend went into get a CD which had been €12 on Monday...but was €13 when he went to get it. While waiting for him I was looking at a DVD set. There was one left at the original price of €22 but the rest were marked 'CLEAROUT - 23.99'. That's a €2 mark up. It's all a bit dodgy for me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,465 ✭✭✭JohnC.

I've heard the same stories from UK stores. When they give €/£x off the price, it is off the original RRP (or whatever they call it these days) rather than the price they had been selling it for. So it can result it items actually costing more than they were previously sold for.

i thinking back to 5th year business studies here but when an item is offered in a sale, the sale price has to be a % of what the item was previously priced at in the shop. not a % of the rrp.

    example
original price of an item is 20.00 but rrp is 30.00

if it is marked 50% off, then should it cost 10.00 and not 15.00.

one of the big rackets in the uk is that the larger shopping stores only have to put the item at a higher price in one of its shops for a week ,and then they can sell the item in there other stores at a lower price and say its on sale, i bet that is what is happening in ireland now

i dont think its much of a scam, lost of decent things in there for about €7-8 and 30% off marked price.. some empty shelves though!

Many normal consumer laws don't apply to a business in administration. I don't know if this specifically does or not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,588 ✭✭✭femur61

I always thought Zavvi/Virgin was expensive so it really doesn't surprise me they went into administration. I think with the internet people are looking at the best deals. I haven't been near Zavvi for the simple reason even with their added 30% off they are still expensive.

Its not a scam, more likely mispriced stock. If you bring the cheaper item up to the counter, you will still get another 30% off that price.
Also, nowhere in the store do they have was/now pricing, so its not officially a sale, but I know that about 95% of the stock in did come down in price, very little if any went up.

    stevek21 wrote: »

that would seem to be it. i was in there last week, i had picked out three DVDs that were 3 for €25 on the shelf which would be reduced by 30% at the till but as i was going to the till i passed another shelf that had all three DVDs for €5 each.
i put back the others, picked up the three €5 DVDs and got 30% off €15 rather than €25.
bad stock keeping but then again forced administration means there weren't capable hands at the ZAVVI tiller.
Richard Branson couldn't have divested at a better time. so which investment fund shat themselves on that purchase.

i think no matter what the price is, or was, or wanted to be , the thing that we all should be looking for is value, and if any product seems too expensive , then it porbably is , and if its too cheap then it probly is too, and ure being sold a pup , so look for value and if u dont get it .. keep your cash! I did manage to pick up the shineing there for 4 quid ... cheap scares!

Thats 25 jobs gone, according to KCLR and probably a couple less apartments rented out in McDonagh, know people who worked in Zavvi that were renting there because it was so close! Anything in there would be good, i've no real reason to go to McDonagh now at all. i'd say the rest of the tenants renting shops are losing money but are probably stuck in a 2 yr contract or something,
