Drive past the buttercrane. ( Quays car park on your right ). Take next left. You will pass the side entrance of the Buttercrane on your left and the river will be running along your right side. ( This is Merchant's Quay ). Take the 2nd left after the buttercrane then first right. Its tucked. in there along with TX Maxx, Dunnes and some other household store.

Went up to ASDA near Boucher Crescent Retail Park in Belfast BT12 6HU on yesterday.

Loads of bargains to be had.

The only issue was on the way back to Dublin the A1 NEWRY BYPASS had a back up of traffic, bit of a nightmare.

They are up-grading the existing road with rock blasting every Wednesday so take heed.

Does anyone know when they are due to complete the job on the A1.

    Thank you

You can come off that M50 motorway at the Red Cow and head down by the Phoenix Park and onwards to the M50 again at the airport for a couple of minutes and then onto the M1 towards Newry.

Sitting in the traffic on the M50 sometimes could be an hour even longer, but if you were to take the phoenix park route you'd be at the airport area in about 20 minutes max.
20 minutes (even outside rush times) would be almost impossible! During rush times, you'd want to allow at least 45 minutes for this route.

That's because Newry is a city! Was designated as such a few years ago.

I travel that route twice a week for the past 2 years. The time I stated above is the max time it takes. Next time you want to try and undermine someone get your facts straight. Ok

The only thing is, is the headache that is the Red Cow, its the most stressful part of the journey.

Kilkenny - Naas - Sallins - Maynooth - Dunboyne - Blanchardstown bypass - M1. Even if you hit school traffic its still quicker than the Red Cow.

Although with the M50 being 3 lanes from the Red Cow to the Finglas exit, I think 20 mins is actually quite feasible if you stay on the M50 and there are no crashes or breakdowns or whatever that day.

Don't see how Famous45 is managing 20 mins travelling through town though. Why you could get stuck for 20 mins at a single choke point along the routes I'm thinking of. Famous45, what streets are you using?

yeah i saw an ad in the herald the other day and booked them for last friday.it took just over in an hour(bus lanes-great when you can use them) to get there, went to sainsburys to stock up on booze and food for a few weeks. Couldnt get over the savings on everything-but passed by the home brand rum for £5-saw 2 young kackeresque lads even turnig it doen, like paint stripper they said.
dropped off me bags at the courier van &went for breakie for half price(we were gave vouchers for different joints, half price etc on the bus when i got on),went up into the buttercrane and got a few dvds and cds. went on further into newry town centre- didn't realise how big it was-got a few tops! got a coffee(discounted) in obriens and back to the bus 4 1. got home at quarter past 2, all me shopping got home at 5ish, jobs a good'un
realy easy and friendly, for 30quid ye cant really go wrong-defo recommend it-headin up again next week or so. i hear its really good for nappies and baby food and stuff especailly-they were advetising that they were startin a sligo run in march sometime-for all the ones down that country.

M50 is barrier free, so even in rush hour it takes about 15 min from red cow to airport unless there's an accident.

Red cow via phoenix park back to M50 - if all the lights are in you favour and no other traffic problems, 20 minutes minimum. I'd say 1 hour + in rush hour & 30 - 40 minutes regular times.

blackspots - Kylemore road / naas road, Ballyfermot roundabout, chapelizod Village, - all mayhem in rushhour.
Navan road to finglas. - If rail gates are down, wait 5 - 10 mins. N2 - Can be hell at rush hour and then back road to airport also can have its problems.

Simple - use the M50 unless there's an accident.

Kylemore road / naas road, Ballyfermot roundabout, chapelizod Village

You don't touch any of those routes, and, I never said to the airport, I said back onto the M50, past the traffic but as already stated there isnt as much backlog with the eflow with traffic unless there's an accident but I always use the same route as it saves € and it has rarely, if ever, taken me over 20 minutes, if you don't know the route then you don't know your city very well.

SO + 3 to all of the above.

Airport vicinty. That's a big enough radius don't you think. I didn't say outside the departures gate.

Your little rant has nothing to do with the thread so I'll refrain from commenting on your rant any longer. I have never bullsh*tted in any post on this forum so I'm hardly going to begin now. I have a route that I use for the past 2 years as I previously said that bypasses the M50 route in 20 minutes. If that's so hard for you to believe, then please, rant elsewhere. :P

Just remember, if you buy things up North that you would not have bought down here, then you've bought them because they are a 'bargain' - not because you wanted or needed the items. Be careful not to get sucked in by the hysteria of going across the border for 'bargains' as you just may end up spending much more than you had intended in order to get the satisfaction of grabbing 'bargains'.

Do you mean the A1? The southern M1 finishes near Dundalk. Which shopping centres do you mean, though. The ones in the city centre?

I want to bypass the main roundabout where the M1 goes into 1 lane.

I drive up from Drogheda, although in recent weeks I've gone onwards to Sprucefield in Lisburn which is a further 30 mins away and a straight road basically the entire way. Was in Sprucefield today and again the difference between Sainsburys there compared to Newry is frightening.

Anyhow, to get into Newry, The A1 combines with the M1 just passed Dundalk, it's just one road the entire way, you'll come to 1 lane on the A1 approaching Newry and onto a roundabout the 3rd exit brings you down into Newry.

If you take exit 2 it will take you to Belfast direction and 10 mins outside Newry is a place named The Outlet(bridgewater park), many stores located there for clothes etc. and on the same road 20 mins further is Sprucefield.

When you come off exit 3 into Newry you'll do down a hill and eventually meet several traffic lights, on the right coming down the hill you will see the Quays shopping centre this is where Sainsburys is located - when you get to the bottom on the hill you will most likely see Debenhams 1st on the right. On the left is the Buttercrane Centre.

One other advantage of shopping of Sainsburys, is the breadth and depth of product range. In other words, they stock a better selection of everyday items, many of which are not available in Ireland. Specifically, pastas, canned goods and also small items that are great for treats for school lunchboxes.

Years ago, when travelling home from our holidays in Donegal, we used to look forward to spending time and pocket money at the sweet counter in Woolworths in Derry. Loads of stuff that you could never get in Dublin, like Munchies, Mintolas and Caramac bars. Then you had a 4 hour car journey trying to resist the temptation to tuck in and scoff the lot before you even left the North.

Shopping centres Buttercrane and quays. I want to bypass the roundabout though at the M1 Newry exit. Is there not another way into Newry instead of that junction.
Also is there a Lidl and Aldi?

First of all, there is no M1 at Newry. The RoI one stops at the border, and the NI one is not near Newry.

If driving from ROI, your only other choice is to come via Omeath, but you're going a long way out of your way to avoid the roundabout. If there was another way into Newry, that would be choked with ROI cars too ;).

The LIDL and ALDI sites have store locator functions.

Don't understand what you mean by this, you mean you don't want to travel the whole way on the A1 into Newry?

There is a Lidl, it's tucked away on the other side of the river but it's not overally difficult to get to.

Well - you can pull off at the Jonesborough junction on the M1, drive through Meigh village, and then rather than drive down the forkhill road to the first roundabout, you could keep to the backroads and head to Camlough road and rejoin the Newry bypass there.

Probably not worth bothering unless it's early on a Saturday though. I've done the Meigh rat-run to avoid the tailback before the first roundabout and emerged at the roundabout with no tailback to be seen (or avoided in the first place).

Thanks for the info. The last time I was in newry was last friday at around 12.30 pm and I was stuck at roundabout where 2 lanes of motorway turns into 1 at top of newry hill for about 40 minutes. I have tried the omeath way and it adds about 15 minutes to journey which isn't too bad.
