Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

You know what bugs me most about iOS and no one seems to talk about it.

The App store, every time you download an app or an update it kicks you out to show the app installing.

Drives me mad, want to stay in the App store and let download/installatoin run in background.

Was that not added in iOS 6? Background downloads on the App Store. Maybe I dreamt it :D

That will be fixed in today's update.

Drives me nuts. Probably the most nonsensical feature on ios.

I think that's one of the changes happening in iOS 6. I'm just not sure if it'll happen today with the iOS update, or next month with the iTunes update.

It's in iOS 6.0. When you tap on download/update, the button will change to "downloading" and then "open" without kicking you back to the home screen. You stay in the App Store. It behaves the same way as the Mac App Store.

That is fixed in IOS6. You can view the download in the App Store. Then choose 'Open' if you wish. Another change I like is that we are no longer required to enter Apple ID password when 'updating' an App. Handy.

6pm, if you really want download the GM version from a torrent site and update it through iTunes by holding down ALT and Shift while clicking the update icon, will probably stay on the GM version (as it is essentially the finished product) for a few days until the traffic dies down on the official apple servers, will be manic at 6pm with everyone trying to update at the same time

Any idea what size download it's likely to be?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,748 ✭✭✭rolexeagle1

I remember getting the update for iOS5 handy enough on release date. I think I put it down to the fact I already had the iTunes update downloaded and was using the uni internet, so it was pretty good.

As I have an iPhone4, would I not have a smaller update to download as I don't have Siri and all the updates that will go with that?

  • Registered Users Posts: 612 ✭✭✭Qwerty Dub

I have the GM version on my phone. Will the phone suggest an update OTA for me or will it tell me that I am running the latest software meaning if I wish to get the official release I will have to do a RESTORE via iTunes, as opposed to a software update.

    Cheers....

Apple's maps are an absolute disaster! I think I may have to hold off upgrading my iPhone until Google release a standalone app. The web version isn't an acceptable alternative and I have a funny feeling Google might delay the app as long as possible. I would strongly encourage anyone who relies on the Maps app to think twice before upgrading.

And remember to make sure you have enough spare memory available on your device! Around a 1g just to be sure.

Available now on my iPad over the air. Downloading quickly, started at About 10 minutes remaining and immediately dropped to 7 minutes /thinly veiled boast about 50MB FTTH line

Still not showing ota on my iPhone 4 or 4s

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,796 ✭✭✭mailforkev

I'm on 5 mins remaining here, although I remember going to iOS 5 that it told me a few minutes but the last minute was about 20 mins long.

Maybe their new server farm will have fixed that though.

Have to leave home and don't want to leave home without the phone. It'll be a few hours before I get to download it but I have my mam's phone updating now so I'll get to get used to it while my own is downloading. Maybe the delay will allow my download to go quicker later on!

Is Apple Maps really that bad?

Might not bother if they're just terrible, I love the maps app.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 346 ✭✭dorkacle

Is there anything other than Google maps that will be removed if you update? I haven't heard anything about this!

(Didn't think I was, but must off be living under a rock!? Or have Apple conveniently not publicised this?)

    P.S. Using Iphone 4 not 4s :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 535 ✭✭✭Dorsanty

Stuck on 23 minutes. (now at 24 actually following writing this up)

Hmmm, when will big commercial companies start using p2p for this sort of thing? It would be of huge benefit, though you'd probably get people seeding bad data, etc.

The native Youtube App is also going...but its already been replaced by an improved one that went live last week in the App Store (few useful features missing from it though - like 'history').

Can anybody who is now using iOS6 comment on the new Maps App? I've read that its particularly lacking in detail for Ireland. Annoying too is the removal of Google Streetview in iOS6. I found Streetview a very handy feature for identifying addresses/shops that I hadn't been to before.

Seems like a very petty attempt at having a stab at Google really, particularly considering Google are just releasing app store equivalents...?

I am by no means a 'fanboy' but as much as I like their products, Apple are really turning me off with much of the activities of late. :(

Well in fairness Google are now a major competitor to Apple in the market so why should they promote them?

I'm sure there will be a new Google Maps App soon anyway.

The maps lack detail. They also have accuracy problems. Dublin Zoo is on Exchequer Street, the Lighthouse Cinema is in Church Square, etc. Looking at my own area in the Dublin suburbs, there's barely an detail at all and what little there is is a joke. Take away restaurants, florists, etc in the middle of housing estates, no where near their actual location, incorrect street names and so on. There's just no way you could trust it.

Flyover (3D) view on Apple Maps works between the canals in Dublin, but thats it. Google Maps is much better for the moment.

    Hmm is it worth updating?
My 4G iPod is still on 4.3.1 ;) jailbroken so I never bothered updating. I'll need a Google Maps app as soon as possible haha

Why did you never update to IOS5 to make use of iMessage etc and Jailbreak again?

Tis a matter of opinion about whether update is worth it or not. Having used the GM version on phone for a week and Beta on iPad 2 for a couple of months I would say no, but thats just me.
