Remember the days when it used to take 5/6 hours drive from Dublin to Castlebar?

In fairness I've been making that journey since the early 1980s and it never took that long, max 3 1/2 hours.

If this road opens in August it'll be a surprise as it was originally programmed for November.

Ah your being way to generous, never did it under 4 hours.

Many a time I was stuck in Longford town for 30 minutes alone

Longford, like Ballaghadereen, was much more of an issue Dublin-bound than Mayo-bound. Killer if you went up for a day for work and were returning, tired, in peak traffic.

I'll be there as well. Want to film end-to-end travel in both directions. :)

Actually, now that you mention it - is there any chance you could, at the same time, take a GPS track log (apps available for most smart phones to do this, I can advise if required)?

My reason for asking is that this will enable OpenStreetMap to be brought quickly up-to-date with the new road geometry. I'd be grateful to any and all for as many tracklogs as I can get from both directions of travel and including any turn-offs and also any realignments/curtailments of side roads.

Your video footage will also be very useful for this purpose, if you are OK with it being used.

Thanks to anybody who can help!

I can't promise I'd be able to get a smartphone with such a feature - not sure. Although my dashcam has built-in GPS, so hopefully it'd be OK. :)

And hopefully rumours about opening date will become true. ;)

If it allows you to adjust the logging interval, and the memory is available to do so, please set it to the most frequent setting possible. 1s is the optimum.

    Thanks!

1s is default and non-changeable option. File is created once a minute, can be exported to .kml only.

    Here's the example:

KML is fine. I'll take all the traces you can get of the scheme and side roads. Nice one!

Article in the Irish Times discussing the possible effects of the opening of the new bypass on the town. Mentions an opening in "early September if not before then".

I heard it was going to be opened next weekend so that the Mayo boys would have easier access to Croker to give the poor Cork boys a good trouncing

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,767 ✭✭✭SeanW

Or perhaps so that the Mayo boys will have a nice road to drive home on when they get trounced and have to go home with their tails between their legs. :P

Some bend on the last picture alright

The are great at putting bends in on a road that could be straight

The are great at putting bends in on a road that could be straight

Done for safety reasons - dead straight wide roads with overbridges are more dangerous than pretty much any other type as drivers drive as if they're motorways; also there's very old ideas about it causing people to go asleep; and sometimes for land acquisition and geology reasons - can be cheaper to buy an entire field and swerve to avoid another than buy parts of two and put in private bridges.

I'd be of the thinking that bends would result in higher amount of cars leaving the road, esp in bad weather

That bend in the photo would be over 3/4 of a kilometer long I'd say. The fact that there's no obstructions to the view make it all seem very short.

how much time will this save?
In laws are from out past ballina so any reduction in time getting there is fantastic

Easily 5 mins or so, no hassle of the corner in Ballaghaderreen which can be a disaster

Will save a lot more Dublin-bound than Mayo-bound so your escape will be significantly faster.

All that's needed now is to upgrade that pesky Frenchpark to Strokestown section. Or are plans still around to reroute the N5 to Carrick-On-Shannon?

I think that's knocked on the head.... I think it would make much more sense, having to go no where near longford would be a bonus.
