Hi there, was looking for a camera that basically does what it says on tin! I have 3 kids so I need to just point and shoot. And posssibly be bounce proof as well as the midgets love to take pics. I saw one in Currys, Kodak easyshare M522 for €59.98 - its 14mp, what do you think? My previous camera is a canon ixus which was fine but had too many extras that I just never used. Thanks - help would be appreciated.

Yeah get that one. Sure it's Kodak, they are a big company and clearly know what they are doing, especially in the digital camera market.

So I've been looking at amazon.de for a new DSLR, just wondering has anyone here bought from them and also would I be covered under warranty if I do buy from them?

have you considered a film camera and use high iso film. good quality kit can be had for a low price.

other than that i would a suggest a sigma 17-35mm hsm lens and possibly some sort of nikon semi professional model camera.

it is very unlikely that you will pick up a 30mm f1.4 or f1.8 cheaply but keep an eye out and you might get lucky

thinking of combine Sigma 18-50mm f2.8-4.5 hsm Lens with Nikon D70? will that work out fine?

Hey guys thinking of getting a DSLR camera, want to get into photography but dont have much of an idea of what to go for, looking to spend no more than €700. Any ideas? Would be willing to buy a second hand one. Thanks

you should be able to pick yourself up a canon 600d or 550d from adverts for under that price. you'd be able to shoot decent enough quality video then too and spend the remainder of your budget on some extra gear.

Thanks, although would the d90 not be better since the video quality is better? I was recommended by a friend to go for one with decent video potential. What about this ad? http://www.adverts.ie/digital-cameras/nikon-d90-only-body-for-sale/1533506#comment_7504321

im not an expert by any stretch if the imagination but from what ive read on dslr video sites the nikons shoot video in 720 vs 1080 for the canons. the panasonic gh2's have a good rep for video. someone else will more than likely be able to give better advice. anyway just bear in mind if you do go for a canon the only major difference between the 550d and 600d is the flip out screen on the latter. on that basis might not be worth the extra cash unless you can pick up a good deal

Mods please move if there is a more appropriate forum for this, I had a read through the charter and this seems like the right place.

Just posting this for a friend of mine, he is looking for a (preferably) new Polaroid camera. He has done some shopping online and found a One 600 for €120. Just wondering does anyone have any recommendations on a particular camera, and where he could source the cheapest one? He would ideally prefer a new one.

    Thanks!

Don't get polaroid. Get one of the Fuji Instax cameras instead. You can get polaroid film nowadays only from the impossible project, which started manufacturing pola film when polaroid itself discontinued it. They've never really managed to make film to the same quality as the old polaroid stuff, though some people like it, and it's quite pricey. The instax cameras you can get retail here (try gunns on wexford street) and the film is pretty reasonable.

Note that you might see polaroid branded cameras new with polaroid branded film, but they're just re-badged instax mini cameras being sold at a markup.

    Hey guys,
I'm about to buy a camera and after scrolling through argos for a while I realize I've no clue how to judge the quality. I want to spend about E150 and I'll be using it for outdoor photography for woodland and landscapes mainly as well as pics on holidays etc. Don't want a whole load of useless features just something that can produce natural looking photos and introduce me to photography. I don't mind going used either.

I'm considering this 'Samsung WB720 14MP' since it has E90 marked off http://www.argos.ie/static/Product/partNumber/5597226.htm

    All help appreciated :D
    Thanks

    Hi guys,

I would appreciate any opinions on the best cameras on the market today in terms of picture quality, value for money, battery power, etc. There are so many on the market, I just have no clue

I'm going on holidays, to a wedding and just for general use but I particularly want nice pictures of my holidays!
I haven't had a camera in 2 years because I went through 3 in the space of a year, (stolen , cracked on plane, broke!) so something durable too!

    Thanks :)

Hi, looking for advice on getting a good quality wider angle lens when using a canon 7d. Already have a canon 24-70 2.8 but find it's not wide enough sometimes. Would people recommend the canon 16-35 2.8 or are there any other cheaper alternatives? Thanks.

    Film or digital?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,133 ✭✭✭View Profile

First of all, apologies if this is an inappropriate question for this forum, but I would appreciate some guidance on my camera choice.

I am an airline pilot and in the need of a decent digital camera for taking shots while in the air. This would include shots from high altitude of the ground, shots from altitude of other aircraft passing-by (few Kms away) and interior shots of the flightdeck. These shots would be taken in low light, bright and near dark conditions.
I don't want a physically large camera, needs to fit in my flight bag, so no telescopic lenses. Also im an amateur so would require something fairly user friendly although I would be happy to learn some more about photography.
The camera would also be used in social occasions.

Unrelated to my requirements, perhaps, I have taken a shine to Fuji's X100 or X10. Love the retro look and seems like a solid camera that would do me for the next 5+ years.
My price range therefore would be from €400-€800.

    Any suggestions then?

    Thanks.;)

The canon G series or the Nikon One might be what you're after. Both are great little cameras - though the Nikon option might break your budget!

I got the X100 recently, normally use DSLR but needed something smaller and lighter for everyday use. I love it! But bare in mind its a fixed lens so will limit you on your description of what you wanted to do

Just a standard enough one I could pick up in DID/Argos or a pharmacy, nothing professional!

I think he was taking the p**s :) anyway Denis everybody knows that planes don't have steering wheels!!

What about one of them point and shoot with the interchangeable lenses? Dont know much about them but sounds like it could suit the OP?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,789 ✭✭✭✭ScumLord

I would have thought you'd need fairly specialised equipment to do what you want to do. Even a top of the line camera is going to have difficulty taking low light photos of something a few km away if you don't know what your doing. If you then want to use the camera to take pictures of the inside of the plane you'd need at least two different lenses.

There are a few things you should consider.

How wide do you want to go?

Will you stay with APS-C or are you likely to switch to full-frame in the future?

There are a few good options for the 7D. The Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 (non-VC version)
is a great lens. If you need something wider, the Canon 10-22mm is highly regarded.
If you don't need large aperture, the Canon 15-85mm IS USM is another excellent lens.

For full frame, the obvious choices are the Canon 16-35mm you mentioned
    and the 17-40mm f/4L.

I have thought about it but they tend to be a great deal more expensive. My friend has a great Nikon DSLR which she bought for peanuts in India and it takes beautiful pictures.

Are there any DSLR's around 200? Could probably stretch to 300.

While you want something cheap, the low light requirement tends to work against that because it implies a larger sensor and fast lens, neither of which tend to be cheap. Then you have the size and retro requirements. I can think of a camera that fits all your requirements except the price:

    omd-em5.jpg
The Olympus OM-D E-M5: While the pic might give the impression it is large, it actually isn't http://j.mp/A9T6wy

Small, good low light high iso performance and some reasonably fast lenses that would probably let you do the sort of things you mentioned. But they, like the camera, will cost a bit.

The in-body image stabilisation would also help and is the best you can get at the moment.

If the price is a hindrance (€1350)then you could give an Olympus XZ-1 a try, but I think the requirement for shots of aircraft a few k away will be a bit beyond it and most cameras.

There are some fantastic bargains to be had on used DSLR's over at adverts.ie.
I bought both my cameras second-hand and both are like new - thank god for gearheads ;)

Heres one - an SLR with two lens - wide angle and telephoto zoom. This is more than enough to get you started for asking price of 250 euros:

I think I should buy from a shop if I'm going to spend 200+ so I can buy insurance given my track record :p

I would love to take nice photos but I really don't know much about photography. It would be a nice skill to pick up though.

I'm concerned about how bulky the SLRs are. I'm going to NY for the summer and it would be hard to drag around a camera all the time. That said, its probably gonna be a once in a lifetime thing so it'd be nice to capture it all...

So, I probably will just end up buying a compact. Any recommendations? I've read on the forums that they're all the same brand wise but there surely there is a particularly good model?
My sister bought a Panasonic compact (I think it is) and the pictures are fine but the battery doesn't last

I don't know, a 5 or 6 year old SLR? The sensor in that Olympus wasn'exactly great a couple of years ago, the tiny display, meh, buy a decent compact. The Fuji X10 is a great little camera, you could also look at the Canon S100.

Taking images from aircraft through the windows will nearly always give disappointing results if you are just relying on a camera alone.

I took these from the window of a 767 using a Canon G9.

They looked terrible when taken, but I shot them in RAW and gave a bit of thought to Post Processing and was quite happy with the results.

Capturing the image in the camera is Step One. The equivalent of having done all the pre-flight checks and lining up. You now have the potential to fly to your destination. Getting a pleasing result is about Step 16.

I used a G9 for the above images, but the results would have been much the same if I had used a Full Frame DSLR and Pro Glass. The important factors were the ability to save RAW Files and a knowledge of Post Production techniques to compensate for the effects of the window glass and lack of contrast.

    Hi,
I'm interested in buying a new compact digital around the €150 to €200. I like the look of the Panasonic Lumix range. Is it worth pushing the boat out for the TZ range, say the TZ18?
Also, where is the best place to buy? Argos have the TZ18 for €225.
What about Amazon or Ebay? Are they any better?

So. I have a Nikon D3100 slr for over a year now with a 18-55mm lens and looking into buying a new and better lens!
Im mostly taking pictures of landscape/travel/random would anyone be able to recommend a suitable lens? With an explaining as to why as im still learning about the photography craic ;) Im thinking the 55-200mm lens might suit best...with a budget of around 100-200€. Also I was thinking of buying one second hand but I dont know where to look. Lens that I have picked out on Amazon dont seem to ship to Ireland...

One more question...filters....was thinking of buying a few of those too. Any knowledgable people on photography greatly appreciated!:)

The 55-200 VR goes well with the 18-55, you can often pick them up on adverts.ie for around €150.

I'm not saying this is a good buy for you though, that really depends on your intended use as landscape/travel/random is a bit vague...

Am not an expert and dont know an awful amount about this, but u have to careful that the type of lens u want is compatable with ur nikon,

I emailed nikon about the very same subject (also about a lens for the 3100) and they were very very helpful i have to say.

Yes, Nikkor AF-S (S - silent wave motor) lenses have the auto focus motor built in, AF lenses don't.

You obviously know more about photography than I do! SO much to learn though... Just about got the understanding of the aperture/ISO/ shutter speed then trying to get them right etc.... I should prob do a course to help me a bit!! Will see. I'll prob get one of those lens& continue to experiment!

Very little I'd say. I'm still learning. ;)

best bet is to go through your photos that you like and work out which focal lengths you use the most. if it's wide, there's less point buying a telephoto zoom...

I've just started on this with a second hand 3100, I sort of get iso, aperture and shutter speed, but where does focal length enter the equation?

Don't worry, nobody will laugh. ;)

Focal length is the zoom, your current lens goes from 18mm (wide angle) to 55mm.

Haha your post made me feel a bit better!!! :) if you were to set it on auto then why would you buy an slr?? You want to be able to create& capture interesting photos with what you have because you CAN! And a much better sense of satisfaction when you do learn to capture that one great photo on manual:):)
