Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. Hey! I am going to spend the next autumn semester at the UCC as an Erasmus-student. I am actually looking for a place to live. I thought about the Jennings Pool Apartments - does someone live there or has experiences?

My friend & I are working in UCC for the month of July (and maybe into August) and we are looking for some student accomodation in & around UCC.

As I'm not from Cork, I'm finding it hard to know which places are good, bad or brutal! Mardyke Hall, Lancaster Hall, Brookfield are some of the places I've come up with that have good rates over the summer.

I've gathered from the thread that Deanhall is desperate so I've crossed that off my list. Are their any others you could recommend to me?????? Any advice would be fanstatic:)

Houses would be a good bit cheaper I'd say, €50 a week max.

I've lived there, really nice apartments. Especially if you get one of the ensuite rooms - They're really spacious

Sounds good, but I will only get a single room - are they also ok?

And does the rooms really look like on these photos? :)

Ok cool - I have one final question: How is the internet connection there? I read that at the Brookfield Apartments there isn't the best one - how is the situation at Jennings?

UCC accommodation office, they keep a list of them afaik.

Vic Mills is very nice! Everything about them really is better then brookfield, but Brookfield is way more banter! I think you meet way more people around brookfield, all your neighbors and everything rather then the mills! Its not as nice inside but its not the worst!

Hi, Can anyone help me please. I'm enquiring for a friend. She is hoping to stay off campus this year. Can anyone recommend what area she should stay in. She wants to be in an area near other students. Also what is the going rate for houses off campus. Thanks for your help.

    Hi

It really depends what her budget for rent is going to be. At the moment we predict rents to be between €65 to €85 depending on the location. However, it's still too early to be looking for a house for next year. We would recommend that June is the best time to start looking as you will see the house in an empty state. I'd also suggest that your friend or yourself calls into us in the office. We can be found on College Road just up from An Scoilaire.

I know that's the accommodation office ^^^^ and they're obviously the experts, but I was looking at houses for the summer over the last week or so and some nice ones are already gone for next year (I presume students from this year going back to the same house or recommending friends). There'll be more available in June alright, and we didn't find ours til August last year, but there's no harm at all in looking now!

    Hi there,

I am a final year PhD student and have to move to Cork for the summer, I'm torn over Brookfield (Jennings Pool) or Victoria Mills - VM is only a single room whereas I can get a double in Brookfield for the same price...Brookfield also has a gym I can use!

Do people have any opinions on which would be better - I'm looking for somewhere peaceful for the summer to finish my thesis - any suggestions on which would be better?

    Thanks a mil!

Right so, just looking for advice regards accommodation for next year. At the moment, I'm in Vic Lodge and definitely not living with my current roommates next year. However most of the people I would have asked about getting a house, etc, are living with their roommates for next year and I'm sort of left on my own. :( Is there anywhere ye'd recommend for a second-year loner like me?

Hey, I'm (hopefully) going to UCC in september, and was just wondering what the best accommodation is? I've already researched all the obvious ones and the on-campus sites, but they're really expensive .. was wondering if Brookfield is any good? Or Seven North Mall? Cheers!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 59 ✭✭JohnyDarko

From all my experience you're really always better off going and sorting out your own digs from a landlord. Not only will you have no rules about how many people are allowed up and so on but you're also able to order in whichever TV/Internet providers you want and its generally cheaper too (think 2 years ago it was around 4,500 for the year in Brookfield while we got a very nice house on Highfield Ave for 3,600 + bills (so maybe max 4,000). That said I've heard Brookfield's great apart from the internet there which is atrocious (they used to block youtube videos, pretty sure they don't still though.) if you want to download/game.

    Hi CaoimheCweeva

We'd recommend waiting until you have finished your leaving cert exams. After the exams have finished you can come to our office on College Road and we can talk through all the options with you. There is a lot to choose from, coming down to cork would let you have a look at some of the accommodation on offer.

    Hi

I'm due to start in September on a postgrad IT course and looking for a place, ideally near the western gate/computer science building. Looking on the UCC accommodations website/Daft the rates from the landlords seem to generally be higher than what I would expect - where would I go to find students advertising a spare room they need to fill? Is there a notice board somewhere on campus that I can check?

Hope someone can advise me asap!

    Many thanks

    Rob

    Hi Rob

In the Accommodation Office we have a notice board of students looking for other students to fill spaces in houses.

In regards to the prices with rent. The apartment complexes' prices will not be changing through the course of the year. They are set and will not change. Rent for private houses can fluctuate. Houses may cost around €85-90 p/w at the moment, but remember these prices may well drop over the course of the summer.

If you have any questions or queries please feel free to contact us or call into our office on College Road.

    All the best

    Hey Guys,

I am looking for accommodation advice for Sept around UCC.

I have been looking at the Fullers Lodge development located on College Road.
Is anyone familiar what the development and the apartments? If so what are they like?

    Any advice is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks ☺

Yikes its pricey! Houses are so much cheaper and you have more freedom.

If you want an apartment in a managed block deanshall crosses green is nice. Rates are a bit more reasonable and you're right in the middle of town which is so handy.

Hi there. Spend four years in UCC and came across some dives and some very nice places. Fullers lodge is ok, when I was in there it was clean but a little damp and that area is VERY noisy. Well i found it to be anyway. If you can afford it on campus accom like vic mills, vic lodge and uni hall are great. I was in uni hall for two years and loved the place, gated entrance so no listening to hooligans at all hours of the night - built in 2006 so new enough development. Mind you it was pricey but from what I have seen around the place I have to say that it was the best. A lot of those places have common rooms too - great if you lose your internet connection and really need net access. Steer well clear of castlewhite - stayed there for a year and my god the amount of people ringing our doorbell at night was shameful. You have 24hr security aswell so that makes a huge difference too. Houses can be disastrous, but some are very nice. There are some quite nice ones there just up by donovans road, think they are called honan mews. There's plenty choice but get booking as places fill up fast and generally deposits are non-refundable!

Many student accommodation around and near UCC. I would advise to go with a student hall type accommodation as mentioned previously. Best ones all round despite them being a bit pricey. A couple of options to look into. Maybe digs for first year and then move in with students the following few years.

Are you a 1st year or will you be a postgrad? Accommodation available can vary.

Deans hall doesn't look too bad, victoria station, victoria lodge, victoria mills, university hall be your best bet I think, brookfield, farranlea and castlewhite might not be too bad depends what kind of accommodation you want, move in with a few or a big group of people? Have an en-suite or do you want to have own room but share everything else? Think The student Village might not be too bad or specialised student accommodation in the city or around bishopstown. All the ones I have mentioned are in very good locations and seem good enough to stay in. I only stayed in postgrad accommodation on dennehy's cross., excellent location, lovely apartments so suited me.

Best to organise your accommodation as soon as you can.

I was looking into Sheare's Gate accommodation, not far from UCC but don't know anything about it.

Have a look at the following website, UCC owns and runs the on campus accommodation.

    http://www.ucccampusaccommodation.com/student_accommodation.cfm

Have you looked into the accommodation thread for any helpful tips?

    Hey doovdela,

How are you? Thanks for the MSG reply and for all the useful information and links. It is much appreciated

I am going doing an undergraduate degree as a mature student in Sept. So I am a little bit specific in what I want in terms of accommodation. I am not really interested in living with first years in the student halls etc. (been there done that kind of thing)

I would like to share with other mature students or post grad students. I was looking at apartments but that may not be viable due to the price range. So sharing seems the most realistic option. I would also like something relatively close to UCC.

Dennehy’s cross-accommodation looks very nice. But I imagine that is only specially for post grad students? I presume they don’t expect undergraduate mature students?

    Thanks for your help.

Thanks for all the tips and info guys.Much appreciated. I am going back as a mature student so ideally I would like accommodation more centred around mature students etc. I am not really keen on living in the halls etc.

On the fact you are a mature student Dennehy's Cross might allow you to apply for the accommodation but saying that they are designed for postgrads. So is the Sheare Gates one I think. There are plenty of places you can look into though that offer 9 month lease. Have you looked into daft.ie? It be hard not to find a place where you are to not share with a minimum of 2-3 people. It be hard enough to find a place for one person on their own especially for a student if they not looking to share though unless you plan to stay for a year like? Most leases are for a year. Though if you look hard enough you might get a place of your own with a minimum of a 9 month lease. Though you may have to look a little bit out of the city or in the city.

Bishopstown, Blackpool, Blackrock, Douglas be worth looking into but if you looking to be nearer to UCC, Bishopstown or near the college be your best bet. Get familiar with maps though if you want an idea where places you are looking into. I highly recommend visiting the apartment/housing before you go ahead with your contract. Dennehy's Cross is about 5 minutes walk from the IT Building and Dennehy's Cross is about 20 minutes walk to the main UCC campus. You can travel by bus or by bike no problem if you nearer to UCC. I be looking into places that are within walkable distances. Google map give you an idea how far the places are from UCC.

    Good luck in your search.
