    Shogun

‘Shōgun’ “Re-Adaptation” With Writer Justin Marks Headed To Production At FX
“It’s a big re-adaptation in a sense that we had many scripts and were in pre-production, and we ended up for various reasons deciding that we didn’t believe in the production plan and we didn’t think the scripts in their current form were as good as they could be,” FX Networks Chairman John Landgraf told Deadline during TCA earlier this month. “The writer (Ronan Bennett) was no longer available to keep working on those scripts, so we took it down to the studs, we started from scratch. Now are well into development, and are really excited about the scripts that are coming out of that. We have read multiple scripts, multiple rewrites of scripts, multiple outlines.”

Both Landgraf and FX entertainment president Eric Schier praised Marks, saying that he “is doing a really good job.”

I'd agree with you 100% but there's only 5 books and 3 of them are already movies so there isn't much room to maneuver. I always thought that his books were perfect for a TV series rather than movies but he was just a little bit ahead of the HBO/Netflix/Amazon tide.

    Country Comfort

Katharine McPhee Nanny-esque Sitcom Snags Netflix Series Order
Take The Nanny and The Partridge Family and, ahem, smash them together and that’s Katharine McPhee‘s TV comeback vehicle in a nutshell.

TVLine has learned that Netflix has placed a 10-episode, straight-to-series order for Country Comfort, a new multi-cam sitcom starring McPhee as a modern-day, country-tinged version of Fran Drescher’s iconic au pair. Despite the familiar premise, and the fact that Country Comfort hails from longtime Nanny EP Caryn Lucas, the project is not a reboot of CBS’ classic Fran Drescher comedy.

The series finds Smash and Scorpion vet McPhee playing Bailey, a down-on-her-luck country singer who takes a job as a nanny for a rugged cowboy (played by Take Two‘s Eddie Cibrian) and his five children. “With a never-give up attitude and loads of Southern charm, this newbie-nanny is able to navigate the family dynamics and be the mother figure they’ve been missing,” per the official logline. “To her surprise, Bailey also gets the band she’s been missing in this musically talented family who help get her back on the road to stardom.”

The ensemble also includes Ricardo Hurtado (School of Rock) as well as relative newcomers Jamie Martin Mann, Pyper Braun, Shiloh Verrico and Griffin McIntyre

    Perpetual Grace LTD cancelled.

To Wrap With Limited-Run Conclusion On Epix In Lieu Of Second Season
Epix’s noir drama series Perpetual Grace, LTD will not be renewed for a second season but will get a proper ending. We have learned that the premium network is planning a short limited run as a followup to the first season of the Ben Kingsley and Jimmi Simpson-fronted drama. Talks are still in early stages, with the exact number of episodes TBD, sources stress.

While received very well by critics and fans, with 88% fresh rating from critics and 89% from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes, the off-beat series did not find wide enough audience.

According to sources, Epix brass have remained high on the show, and while they felt the drama had run its course, given that it ended on an unresolved note, the network wanted to give its story closure.

Missing for almost four years, the castaways are thrust into the spotlight after their rescue, becoming media darlings overnight. But they can’t tell the real story—so they lie.

Webb executive produces and will direct the pilot. Timberman and Beverly executive produce via Timberman-Beverly, along with Mark Martin for Black Lamb and industry veteran Keith Samples who previously worked with Walters on kids series Just Add Magic. Ways & Means

Grey's Anatomy Vet Patrick Dempsey Eyes TV Comeback in CBS Political Drama Ways & Means
Five years after checking out of ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy, Patrick Dempsey is eyeing a TV comeback in another hourlong drama — this time at CBS.

TVLine has learned that Dempsey has been tapped to star in Ways & Means (fka The Whip), a politically-themed drama from Without a Trace EP Ed Redlich that has just scored a CBS pilot order. The potential series finds the erstwhile McDreamy playing a powerful Congressional leader who, after having lost faith in politics, finds himself working secretly with an idealistic young Congresswoman from the opposing party to subvert the hopelessly gridlocked system he helped create. Together, they’ll attempt to save American politics (provided they don’t get caught).

Redlich is co-writing the script with noted GOP political consultant Mike Murphy, and the duo will serve as EPs alongside Denise Di Novi, Tom Lassally and former CBS president Nina Tassler. Joannie Burstein is a Co-EP.

    The Fear Index

‘The Crown’ Producer Left Bank Developing Adaptation Of Robert Harris’ Financial Thriller ‘The Fear Index’ For Sky
Deadline understands that the project is being lined up for British pay-broadcaster Sky and discussions are underway with the Comcast-backed company with a view to turning the book into a four-part drama.

Sony-owned Left Bank is the latest producer to give The Fear Index a crack; nine years ago Fox 2000 and Chernin Entertainment teamed on a deal for the film rights to the book, which was first published in 2011, with Paul Greengrass attached to direct.

The book, which was published by Penguin Random House, is set on May 6 2010, the date of the British general election and the 36-minute flash crash, the trillion-dollar stock market crash. Set in the office of Hoffmann Investment Technologies, a fictional hedge fund in Geneva, it follows founder Dr. Alex Hoffmann, an American expat physicist, who stays out of the public spotlight, but within the secretive inner circles of the ultra-rich he is a legend.
