Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

American 5000m National (Lagat 13:07), College (Lalang 13:08) and High School (Cheserek 13:57) records all going tonight and the 2mile (Rupp 8:09.72)

Disappointment for pole vaulter Tori Pena at the Millrose Games clearing just 4.30m having missed the first 2 attempts at that height also. Still though, plenty of opportunities left for her to make up the extra 5cm on her current P.B. in order to achieve the A standard of 4.50m for the Olympic Games. If so she will become Ireland's first representative male or female in the Olympic pole vault competition. The pole vault is the only track and field event on the current Olympic program in which we have never been represented in either the men's or women's event (i.e. we've never sent a pole vaulter to the Olympics before) so it would be nice to erase that stat from the history of Irish athletics.

Cracking run from Joanne. I think she will be running in Melbourne soon in either the Olympic trials or the Nationals. Not sure which one, but will make sure to get out to support her.

Is it just me that thinks she is a serious shot of making an Olympic final? While she ballsed up the semi final with a false start, she looked extremely good in the heats and I reckoned would have been good for a top 12 spot in Daegu. Just looking back at the women's 4x400 from Daegu on youtube today and her relay split was pure savage.

What time is McCarthy on at and is there live feed?

McCarthy's race was scheduled to take place 30 mins ago, shown on YouTube (see link on athletics on TV thread).

Joanne could do very well in the 400 this year. If she gets down to her best times of 50.7 range then she will be in the shake-up. Probably will take sub 50.5 to make final (I'm just guessing here). But I'm sure she will be hugely encouraged by that early season form. Relay team is looking promising as both Marian Heffernan and Claire Bergin seem to be making improvements also.

    3:57.86 for McCarthy

And throw in the fact that Jessie Barr is improving hugely, there is now nobody (with the exception of Cuddihy) who is guaranteed a spot in the team. This competition for places will raise the overall standard no doubt. 3:26 (low to mid) next year and a big NR is my prediction. Will probably take a high 3:25 to make the final. I don't think they will be far off.

A good night for coach Li taking top 3 spots in that 5k all with Pbs (Lalang and Sambu broke their outdoor PBs also AFAIK)

The 64 almost looked like he was gearing up for the kick though just never came. I think he was running scared as man hunting him down was a 3.57 runner indoors so I suppose its understandable

Derval in action tonight with a solid field the likes of Lolo Jones (Who funnily enough has spent the last few days here in Ireland) as well as Claxton of GB. Should be interesting to see how she fairs as she seems to be gunning for a fast time

    Round up of weekend results. Few good performances which slipped under the radar;

Robinson in 3.41 in Brisbane and Conor McCullough winning the weight throw by over 6m in the Harvard -Yale - Princeton meet.

Just watched the highlights online of the national indoors. What the hell is Jerry Kiernan smoking, saying that we will have a small select team going to London. We're pretty much looking at 20+ athletes more than likely with A standards come London, our biggest team since Sydney, and in those games a massive chunk were sent on B-Standards. Small team compared to USA. Maybe that's what he is referring to

Yeah I heard him saying that too, our team will be upwards of 20+ me thinks, not small at all.
With 13 already and the women's 4x400m on the verge of qualifying along with another couple of athletes who are well capable of getting the standards (Colin Griffin and David Gillick spring to mind) that gives us 20 at least not to mention others already with B-standards that have a good chance of upgrading to A-standard this season. Could even be 25+ which would be incredible. Just a pity the women's 4x100m hadn't any luck on their side because on the back of good times in 2010 they looked to be in with a chance also. Can't see it happening now though.

There was talk of him making the switch last year though not hundred percent certain whether this happened yet or if it is still on the cards but I think he was considering it in order to make the OG as the competition for places in US will be tough with 7 Hammer throwers out performing him last year

why was Derval once again complaining about lack of competition at the odyssey?

she has been pre-selected, she could've done the uk trials and raced jess ennis instead? or ran over 60m at belfast to improve sharpness?

pretty poor championships on the whole but nice to see the likes of daniel mooney and brian kelly win national medals in normally loaded events

good to see seye ogunlewe back racing on these shores, unfortunate that he won't be able to race for Ireland however

ben reynolds was very impressive, heard he has a race in gent so hopefully get the standard there

very impressive junior performances from finnegan, lawler and lavin, the altter particularly competing in the lane next to a former world champion over that event

also anyone know how gillick has been getting on? he had always ran indoors and then the one year he decided to skip it he had an atrocious year, wouldve thought being a runner (superstitious bunch) he wouldve got back racing a couple of times

God no, she aint peaking early at all. I fully believe she can break her national record of 50.71. Why on earth not? I'm sure that's the least of her ambitions for the Olympics, so with such a target then 51.8 is exactly where she would want to be now. Would be great if she could bag the A-Standard in Melbourne in the next few weeks, to get that out of the way, so she can fully focus on London for the rest of the summer.

Sally Pearson wins in Sydney in 12.66, AND she knocked over the last hurdle! Crazy running for February! The only way she doesn't win in London is if she clocks a hurdle ala Devers or Lolo.

    EDIT: Results here:

As does 400m runner Brian Gregan (2nd in 46.66secs), a good night for The Irish in Belgium.

Gregan actually won his heat, with the winner of the other heat getting the overall victory

Brian Gregan has just confirmed that he will not be going to Wirld indoors on twitter. Aiming for Euros and Olympics thus year and sticking to the plan..

Gregan has just tweeted that Ghent was his last indoors of the year, so no World Indoors for him presumably.

Some Irish results from this weekend courtesy of AAI website. Notable performance by Colin Quirke who set a new Irish U23 record in the shot put (17.91cm) and is now only 15cm shy of the long-standing Irish senior indoor shot record held by his father Paul Quirke (18.06cm set in New York, 1991).
Dave McCarthy won the 3,000m event at The Armory, NY in 7:57.50mins to better Mark Carroll's previous Big East record of 8:01.56mins.

It has been a great weekend all round for Irish athletics with great performances from Ben Reynolds, Brian Gregan, Paul Robinson and Joanne Cuddihy to add to Dave McCarthy's victory.

Here is a report of the 30km walk national championships that took place in Claremorris today. Rob Heffernan did not start due to hamstring injury. Good performance from Michael Doyle showing that he could challenge for the 50km Olympic qualifying standard. Jamie Costin could well challenge for this standard too so it will be fascinating to see who will end up on the plane to London in the summer.

Is this the first Irish team to travel with the benefit of both a Team Manager and a Team Leader?

Good to see Sean C. traveling with 2 hurdlers competing and of course the therapist but what the hell with the Team Manager and Team Leader?

Suspect there is trouble in camp regarding those two individuals but then no surprise.

Well I have seen it all now Team Management bigger than the team itself. What do we need a team leader for? all we are short of is a Team Roadie!!:)

Droping like flies in the 60m hurdles for women for the world indoors.
Lolo jones not named in the usa team.
nytra, vukicevic , felicein, wells, carrutters all not named in teams.
kirisi castlin usa is world leader with 7.84. no championship experience on world level.
tiffany porter and of course sally pearson will be there. so still tough enough.
only 4 girls under 8 seconds in the field i think. all with not much experience bar porter at world level. plus sally pearson who will prob win gold. if Derval can round into shape come worlds , she might grab a level who knows.:D

  • Registered Users Posts: 456 ✭✭runjb

Yeap lots of big names seem to be out in the hurdles, which certainly opens up medal chances if Derval is at or near her best.

I would have liked to see Derval get another race in before the champs, any chance she might race this week/weekend? She'll have to show dramatic improvements in the first round and semi final to progress to the final, but it is within her capabilities. I think she can go low 7.90's at least...

Joanne Cuddihy won in Melbourne in 52.37.

Was a good run in decent conditions with a wet track. Held off Tamsyn Manou (Lewis) down the straight.

Brilliant night of athletics. The set up showed what the organisers of the Irish Nationals do so wrong in terms of commentary, running time, food available etc,

Sally Pearson won the hurdles by half a mile in 12.50 and came back to win the 200 in 23.02 all after winning the 100 the night before.

Big talking point is that Mottram looked great again. Winning the 5k in about 13.20 destroying Collis Birmingham in the last 200 after looking strong all the way through. Olympic 5k spot secure.
