Many, many hours wasted in college on this immature 'mature' title, think it was slightly before we got our greasy paws on Quake... Quake was a whole different ball game, but Duke was where the easy single player fun was. Quake was more our multiplayer fix, across the lan in the computer labs!

Duke became a bit of a badge of honour with us, who'd discover the most hilarious or seedy areas in it, and who'd get through it first, especially as games often had to be speedily exited so that we'd not get caught playing it in the labs! :D :pac:

I'd spent many fun hours playing the original Duke games (the 2D platformers) so was already well familiar with Duke Nukem when this came along, but Duke 3D was on a whole other level!

I remember when I got this game on my PC. My parents wouldn't allow it so my friend installed a pirate version in my windows directory in a folder called NCC-1701. Guess what he was a fan of.

I thought it was hilarious at the time but playing it now it's painfully immature but kind of charming in a way, unlike the pretty disgusting duke nukem forever.

I really loved the build engine. It wasn't until half life that a true 3D world matched the level of detail as Duke and it's only recently that games can match its interactivity. It's still a blast to go back to since it's refreshing to play something with gods honest level design and not a cinema tube. The shareware levels are superb but think the major flaw of the game is the other episodes are no where near as good.

I still think Blood and Shadow Warrior were the better a Build engine games and would take Jedi engine games Dark Forces and Outlaws over it but it's still a.classic.

To begin with, welcome to the forum! We're pretty active here, plenty of lively discussion and debate.
Now, downloading games is fine, as long as you pay for them!
Most of the games here are to be found in Virtual Consoles, PSN or XBLA stores, also EBay and humble bundles, as well as elsewhere.

But we can't stress it enough, best way to play is original carts and disks on original hardware, and the price of entry to this hobby is quite cheap and very satisfying.

So, happy collecting and have fun on the forum.

And it's still better than Doom on the Snes :pac:

It looks a little clearer on the MD, but perhaps that's because they were using a reduced size window, and had much blander textures overall.
[edit] Strike that, I'm thinking Doom on the SNES vs Doom MD. Duke on the MD looks worse than both!

But let's be honest, neither is good!!!

Duke 3D was fun when it came out , and was a change of pace from doom and quake shortly after
..one thing that always kind of pissed me off was how misogynistic it was though , not just the strippers n porn movies mind you but the unsaveable naked 'chickzzz' who all you can do is stare at then shoot..Basically theres more lady-hatin there than a fedora full of gamergate gob****es who've just been turned down getting a debs date...(and dont get me started on DNF).
anyway Blood was a MUCH better game ..the whole cheesy 70's B-movie horror vibe in the original was great , (and the insane mutterings of Caleb> than Dukes 'borrowed' quips ),

    In before the lock!

Definitely my favourite FPS of all time, put more hours into it than anything other game especially with the awesome mods that came out and are still coming.

The imagination in the game was amazing, even from the first moment of falling from your ride onto a building top and watching it going down in flames and explode.
It was extremely immersive for the time.

Theres was just so many cool game mechanics that previous games and even games after it lacked. The ability to blow a hole in walls, earthquakes, the ability to swim, jetpack, crawl through vents, and of course the insane amount of interactivity with your environment, that even let you stick your fingers in electric sockets and get a shock! Lol

It took you on an epic adventure, and even had platforming and puzzle elements with great secret areas and lots of cultural references. And the voice acting was totally new and funny.

The weapons were excellent too, especially the pipe bomb which could be detonated from anywhere in the level which is great fun in multiplayer, the shrinker and devastator.

As for the other Build Games I'd take the high tech world of Duke over them anyday.
Blood suffers graphically from the same problem Resistance fall of man does, far too many Brown's and greys. I also find the environment too dull, but its the point of the game I suppose.
I preferred Shadow Warrior but it suffers from pacing issues, the levels tend to be much longer and theres bigger gaps between enemies.
I think they got the flow of Duke 3D spot on.

People on here dislike the level design in Lunar Apocalyose, but in its defense I think there's only so much you can do with space ships and bases. I would have preferred it to another episode where you stay on earth.

As for the Megatron version on Steam I found the mouse support is way off. You're much better off installing the eduke32 exe and launching the game with that.

If anyone ever wants to play online let me know.

But you didn't have to shoot them and if you did you were usually punished by enemies spawning close to them.

It was mysoginistic for sure but in a fun way, I think you over react when you say it was lady hating!

Duke nukem forever on the other hand takes the piss altogether with mysoginy. The less said about that game the better! :p
