I read Mick Wall's Axl book. It's not the worst read but he clearly just went to youtube and described live events in great detail. A very lazy way of researching.

It accelerated the band's implosion in the mid '90's, but the GN'R cover of Sympathy For The Devil isn't actually that bad.

Probably because Axl was reclusive and a bit nuts, and hard to get hold of?

Or Axl probably still holds a grudge against Mick Wall from 1990, and the fact that Mick refused to hand over a copy of the tape of an interview he did with Axl in January 1990.

As he said himself he was consumed by drugs back then a functioning addict his only desire each day was to score his fix each day and play a little rock n roll in between fixs
Duff's addiction to alcohol would be a more sociable addiction .
Something I noticed when reading the biographies was that Slash seemed to have a more detailed account of what was going on while Duff admits to having little or no memory of various dates on the 91-93 tour. Guess it's the various effects of different addictions.

If I recall from Slash's autobio, he always kept a diary in the form of a Filofax. Might explain how was able to "recall" so many little incidents and anecdotes.

Found it to be a great read.

well at least he admits it. I mean just go and look at the GNR interviews from 1992-93 that involved duff. He looks and sounds like death warmed up in them.

I think it was said that slash kept a diary of sorts but I remember that some of them were lost/stolen at some point. In all three biographies of GNR members outside of changing names of people for obvious reason and some vague recollections of events which aren't vague(slash and the St Louis riot etc) they were enjoyable books.

As lithium said about Slash and his struggles. You have to remember slash became famous on a huge scale at 22. I mean he's not the first to fall to the things that fame and fortune bring but thankfully he's come out the far side as have all of the GNR lads.

Slash did an interview with guitar.com during NAMM 2020. The topic of the new Guns album album came up, and here's what he had to say.

Speaking of Guns, have you got anything more you can share about the new album?
There’s been no definitive answer on anything and I’ll just keep keep to that. Stuff is happening, but there are no specifics. More than anything, it’s because of the nature of the industry right now. It’s just like, how do you want to do this? I mean there’s material and there’s recording and there’s **** going on, but we’re not really sure what we’re doing with it right now.

The music industry in 2020 is a lot different to the last time you all made a Guns record.
Yeah! And there’s a handful people who said, ’Yeah, make a record and go old school’. And there’s a handful of people that are like, ’We don’t even know what buying a record is any more!

Thanks very much. Hold tight I suppose. I know that the fanclub are notorious for posting things late so we'll see.

I got my redemption code and have ordered everything - hope you got sorted!

Slash must be completely fed up with axls inability to release music. They should call the next tour "welcome to the cash grab tour"

It's a complete joke but at least slash has got a sense of humour and can see the funny side of it :p

No nobody with the band has died(it's the one thing I fear when I see this thread updated) but just wondering about gnr here on my break as to how they are all still alive.

God knows a few of them gave it their best shot not to be this side of 30 let alone mid 50s
I suppose Steven is the only one that carries the visible scars of their misadventures.
Both Duff and Slash must be of the same DNA of a certain Mr Richards.
If I remember correctly Duff only had one as good as dead episode
    While Slash had two .
Any way Duff was 56 and Axl 58 during the week.
    Happy birthday ****kers .

    Nostalgia band really .
Like all the other massively big touring bands like
    ACDC Metallica Aerosmith Rolling Stones
Big tours nowadays are about selling TShirts not music .
The music has already been bought and paid for 25 years ago

They did give it the old college try alright. Yeah Steven is lucky to be alive being honest. Slash had two ? I remember he "dying" on the UYI tour somewhere in the hotel(outside the lift) but what was the second one ?

Izzy leaving when he did probably saved him from ending up either dead or in jail(he had an incident on a plane from memory in 1989) and duff had one bang and that was that.

Axl never seemed to get too far off the reservation. He obviously drank and did stuff but he never got lost. Even after AFD came out in TV and magazine interview he's always the one who seems on guard. It's mentioned in one interview done in a hotel room of sunset boulevard by the guy doing the interview that axl is the only one fully lucid and stears the others away from saying something stupid.

As far as I can recall, Slash's second one would've been 2001 when his heart gave out after all the years of drugs and booze. Originally given between 6 days to 6 months. He got a 2nd opinion, and thankfully he's still kicking about.

Axl, overdosed in '86, said overdose went on to eventually inspire Coma.

Oh yeah the pacemaker. I’d forgotten about that.
I know the song coma was written after an overdose but I don’t think it was 1986. My recollection was it when he marriage to Erin was breaking down so it was late 80s.

Looking forward to returning too Ireland in June (all going well) to visit Rathfarnham for their gig in Marley Park

First GNR gig since 2017, first time in Dublin since 2015

The GNR concert in Costa Rica which was scheduled for March 18th has been cancelled by the Costa Rican government.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,338 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

Well given the government here won't allow gatherings of 5,000 or more until September 1st it would seem the gig in Marley park is postponed until at least then(if GNR dont just cancel it).

Can't see there being any gigs at all this year. Be great to just push every gig / event forward by 12 months instead of cancelling anything.

Same here but was thinking Slash might have agreed 2021 be put aside for recording/touring with Myles and the Conspirators and would be committed to that or still trying to re-organuse
They are due a new release/tour

Now Susan McKagan's adding more fuel to new GN'R tunes..... On the Appetite For Distortion podcast she said this, picked up by Blabbermouth
I will say GN'R have been working fastidiously on killer new stuff. And I can't say much, but I've heard bits and bobs and it's pretty epic. I do wanna spread the good news, but not detailed news, I guess.

wasant see the first person to announce the return of Duff/Slash ??

going through a few old bootlegs of shows i was at and found one from GNR here in 2012 (not the axl walk off that was 2010 as we knw). It was a decent show and the hired guns were ok but my christ those extended guitar solos/jams. Its actually a pretty similar setlist to the shows on the NITL tour

Disapointed we never got a doc on the reunion but ya never knw it might come out someday

i was at the 2012 gig and it was a ZZZZzzzzzzzzz snoozefest, even ronan keatings exwife and the kid were gone before the encore, incidently Joe elliot was nearby too and he had the same hair as mrs keating, that' s how boring it was!

Slane 2017 on the other hand!

Axl had a prolonged mid life crisis

He looked cool in 2001 at rock in rio but then got those dreadlocks, beard and went downhill from there. Hes in very good nic since the start of the NITL tour

I think it was on an instagram live she did one of her friend said it.

There has always been guitar/drum solos in the previous eras of GNR. I’ve never understood why people complain about them during the last era. Matt sorum had very long drum solos. Axl left the stage between songs in the past, he also used oxygen during the UYI tour.

A documentary of this reunion ? We still haven’t seen the one that was recorded from 1991-1993 and Chinese Democracy took years to come out. Speedy releases of stuff isn’t this bands MO.

  • Registered Users Posts: 48,990 ✭✭✭✭Lithium93_

They've also forced their own fans, to find stuff through ill gotten means. Stuff from 1999/2000 can easily be found if you know where exactly to look.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,338 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

So Matt sorum's autobiography was delayed but it was available for a day in digital form and some fans have posted detailed recaps of it. Dear good little to nothing is positive about any of his former band mates. He barely says anything positive about duff and nothing good about slash. He said he he got shafted on royalties for the live era album because of the additional musician tag.

He says little positive about his time in the cult.

Basically it comes across as a giant moan.

Edit: also slash had something to do with him losing money on UYI.

Jealousy perhaps that he didn't get the call for the Not In This Lifetime Tour, with Axl instead wanting to keep Frank.

as a working musician who had experienced stadium rock tours and playing on huge albums, velvet revolver would have been a decent job. Even though it was meant to be hell due to the singers heroin habit.

Didnt they do a soundcheck in the 02 (3Arenas name at the time) in 2012 to make sure Axl was in the arena ??? Almost sure they had a later stage time down for GNR and they still came on late :D:D

Thin Lizzy were a great support band but they had someother band supporting which were a disaster. Cant think of there name

Well I think the Dublin show that year was the second show so maybe it was sound check for the band and not just axl. They had a full sound check the day before slane.

Vengeance and the panther queen was the name of the other band.

I was at the 2010 and 2012 gigs. They were actually a little later on stage in 2012 iirc. I think the big difference was that Lizzy were a great support act, so people were in a much better mood. 2010 was one interesting night. 2006 was a great gig, but the sound could have been a bit better. Best lineup of the three from that era and definitely the best Axl performance.

2010 was interesting, Danko Jones are an ok band but **** me it was forced overkill that night

Saw them support Volbeat last year and they played for an appropriate amount of time that night (30 mins)

2006 was handy for Axl I'd say next door to the Four Seasons
