Athy 0-6 Celbridge 0-6 at half time. All the county players are playing. Brophy looking very dangerous. They Athy goalkeeper has made a few saves keeping them in it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,101 ✭✭✭klairondavis

    Celbridge win 1-10 to Athy's 1-8.

Eddie Delahunt put Athy in the driving seat with his goal before Conor Brophy hit back for Celbridge. Celbridge closed it out well. A lot of young talent in that team and should be capable of making their mark over the next few years. Athy have a bit of work to do before they face Moorefield in a few weeks.

    SFL Div 2 Final

    Allenwood 1-15 Kilcock 0-12

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,088 ✭✭✭Nib

Round 2 of the Intermediate Championship this weekend. Some interesting games to look forward to.

Caragh v Clogherinkoe - Tough one to call. Caragh are many people tips for relegation while Clogherinkoe's league for in the latter stages of Division 2 was impressive. The Cloghs to shade it by 3 or 4.

Round Towers v Raheens - Undoubtedly the tie of the round. Towers seemed to come into a bit of form during the latter stages of Division 1 finishing in mid-table while Raheens were relegated. Towers will also have their Kildare minors available. Towers by 3 or 4.

Robertstown v Ellistown - This won't be one for the purists. Two dogged, hard working teams who don't score heavily. Ellistown were hammered by Suncroft in the first round while Robertstown were beaten by Nurney. I'll go with Robertstown to pull off somewhat of a shock by 1 or 2.

Kill v Castledermot - David versus Goliath here. Castledermot are many peoples favorites for the Intermediate this year and it's hard to see Kill stopping them. Castledermot by 8 or 10.

Sallins v Ballyteague - Ballyteague have had a poor year so far, relegated from Division 2 and soundly beaten in the first round by Kilcock. Sallins held their own in Division 2 but beat by 7 points against Eadestown in round 1. Hesitant vote to Sallins. However, a draw wouldn't surprise me.

Kilcock v Nurney - Two teams who have had a good year so far. Kilcock topped Division 2 while Nurney Comfortably topped Division 3. Hard to look beyond a Kilcock win though, I don't think they'll have it all their own way though. Kilcock by 3 or 4.

Suncroft v Two Mile House - Another interesting pairing. TMH, last year's Junior All-Ireland winners will go in as favorites due to their mid table finish in Division 2 compared to The Croft's 3rd place in Division 3. Suncroft are well known as a championship team as evidenced in their demolition of Ellistown in round 1 but it's hard to see them beating a very talented Two Mile House. TMH by 3.

Eadestown v Rathangan - Emmett Bolton's return to Eadestown will be a huge plus for them. Rathangan have gone backwards in recent years and seem to be an aging team. Eadestown to win with a bit to spare. Maybe 7 or 8.

Great stuff Nib. The IFC is always ferociously competitive in Kildare.

    As I predicted. Sallins 1-7 Ballyteague 1-7. Clogherinkoe 4-16 Caragh 0-7.

Actually had Sallins in my PP accumulator. :(

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,101 ✭✭✭klairondavis

Great win for the Cloghs. They have two very good forwards in Gravin and McMonagle and a fine midfielder in Grehan.

    Castledermot 2-19 Kill 0-10
    Towers 1-13 Raheens 1-12

Robertstown 1-05 Ellistown 0-08, dire, dire game I'm told.

Castledermot will fancy their chances of going one better this year.

Just back from watching both games. The second game was awful to watch. Not one decent forward on either team. Joe Kavanagh, the one player who can kick a point from anywhere within the 45, was midfield.

Castledermot took a while to get going, but when they did, they were devastating. They will take some stopping.

Towers beat Raheens 1-13 to 1-12 in the other game today.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,101 ✭✭✭klairondavis

Kilcock v Nurney sounds like a thriller.

1-0 to 0-3 at half time.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,101 ✭✭✭klairondavis

    Kilcock 2-9 Nurney 0-6
Suncroft 3-8 Two Mile House 1-10

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,088 ✭✭✭Nib

Rathangan 1-12 Eadestown 1-7. Did not expect that. Was at the two games in Newbridge yesterday. Kilcock didn't look like potential winners. They only scored a goal in the first half and had trouble pulling away from a dogged Nurney who seemed to tire late on. Suncroft v Two Mile House was a good game. Both teams had a man sent off in the first half. The goals were the difference in the end.

    Fri 22 Aug 2014

    Sun 24 Aug 2014

Joe Mallon RENAULT Senior Football Championship Round 2
Venue: Newbridge, St Kevins v Clane 12.00
Venue, Newbridge, Johnstownbridge v Allenwood 13.45
Venue, Raheens, Monasterevan v Confey 13.30
Venue, Newbridge, Athy v Moorefield 18.30
Venue: Naas, Celbridge v St Laurences 19.00

Athy v Moores, Celbridge v Larries and Sash v Carbury the standout ties. Moorefield bullied Athy out of it last year so it will be very interesting to see how Athy match up this year. Celbridge should be on a bit of a high after their league win and Larries look like a team on the way down. If there is to be a shock in this round I think it might be Carbury.

I'll take Naas, Maynooth, Clane, JTB and Confey to win the remaining ties.

Love the way they scheduled the three games in St Conleth's on Sunday. Nothing short of greediness on the CB's part. Penny pinching as usual.

Ellistown hammered Robertsown 3-19 to 2-8 in the replay tonight. Safe for another year. Other game is in extra time.

IFC Rd 3 draw: Eadestown v Ellistown, Raheens v THM, Nurney v Castledermot, Clogherinkoe v Ballyteague

IFC - Relegation semi finals: Sallins v Robertstown & Caragh v Kill

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,101 ✭✭✭klairondavis

That's a heavy defeat for Bobtown. It's funny how two matches between the same teams can take on a completely different pattern.

Moorefield and Clane being the perfect example. Drew first round game, Moores win the replay by 21 points.

Interesting draw. Tough on Nurney again. That's two of the three favorites they've drew in the last two rounds. Ballyteague and Clogherinkoe will be delighted to have drawn eachother. Good win for The Larks tonight, serious result considering they'll be playing Division 3 football next year, although Suncroft have shown it really doesn't make much difference. Eadestown v Ellistown is a toss up while you would expect Raheens to account for TMH.

I think the losers of the Caragh v Kill relegation semi final will go down. Caragh IMO.

Tyrone have conceded a walkover in the u21 "A" All Ireland Hurling Semi Final that had been scheduled to take place tomorrow.

    SFC R2:
    Naas 0-13 Leixlip 0-8

Only one point from play for Leixlip which came after 57 minutes.

Kildare will play Roscommon in the u21 final in a few weeks time after they beat Kerry today.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,147 ✭✭✭✭paulie21

    Maynooth 3-18 Ballymore 0-6.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,101 ✭✭✭klairondavis

    Sarsfields 0-13 Carbury 1-9

Carbury will be wondering how they left that one after them in the second half. Terry Rossiter hit the post from a penalty and had a goal disallowed while Eoghan O'Flaherty missed a free with the last kick to earn them a draw. Sarsfields will need a lot more from their main men to go all the way this year.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,088 ✭✭✭Nib

Safe to say Ballymore will be playing intermediate football next year.

Looking forward to Athy v Moorefield tonight, should be a cracker.

    Moorefield 0-10 Athy 1-7

Not a great game, in fairness the conditions were awful. Moores hit the last 4 points. Replay Wednesday evening, probably in Hawkfield.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,147 ✭✭✭✭paulie21

Celbridge 0-11 St Laurences 1-7. Larries were 4 up with about 15 minutes left probably left it behind them lacking a forward other than Fogarty

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,101 ✭✭✭klairondavis

It's shaping up to be a very open championship. No team has really stood out yet. The extra game might stand to Athy and Moorefield.

Ballymore look odds on favourites for the drop. They are really struggling without James Kavanagh.

There was a big crowd there tonight, will hawkfield be able for a similar sized crowd? I have never been but there's no stand AFAIK

There is a small stand on one side of the main pitch. Sarsfields beat Larries in a semi final held there in 2012 so it should be fine.

True enough. They should open up the greyhound track where there's loads of parking and have a minibus going over the road and back.

Agree Fogarty best Laurence's player by far - but Larry's goal was a gift. But Celbridge evidently a far better team with the county players Lyons, Brophy,Conway & McGrillen plus Harte really dominating in 2nd half.

    Intermediate Round 3
    Eadestown 1-13 Ellistown 0-12
    Nurney 2-8 Castledermot 1-11
    Clogherinkoe 0-12 Ballyteague 0-9
Two Mile House 2-11 Raheens 2-11

Two Mile House v Raheens was a cracking game, TMH will be kicking themselves though, they really should have won. They shot for goal during the last play of the game when all they needed to do was fist it over the bar. Made the Castledermot-Nurney game yesterday in Athy. Good game as well. Nurney hit 1-1 in the last minute to snatch a draw. Willie Heffernan was immense in midfield. Clogherinkoe going well, they could be dark horses.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,101 ✭✭✭klairondavis

It's crazy how competitive the IFC has been in recent years. Almost impossible to predict the outcome of games. Looking forward to the replays on Wednesday night.

Tough ask for Kill now to avoid playing JFC next year. I thought Caragh were beatable so it's a disappointing result although Bobtown will probably be thinking the same after their defeat to Sallins.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,088 ✭✭✭Nib

Kill-Robertstown is very hard to call. I watched Kill against Castledermot a few weeks ago and they were dire. They threw in the towel completely when Castledermot scored a goal to go 1-9 to 0-6 up. Bobtown are no world beaters either.

Maybe the drop would do Kill good, badly in need of a regroup. They have done nothing in the IFC in recent time.

Possibly although it's no formality getting back out of the junior championship. Kill had a good run in the Keogh Cup but it has been a struggle since.

I'll go with Moorefield to beat Naas, Maynooth to beat Kevin's and Confey to beat Allenwood.

Carbury v Larries is a very difficult one to call. They will both feel like they left it behind them the last day out against Sarsfields and Celbridge. It could come down to who has the better day on the frees between O'Flaherty and Fogarty.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,088 ✭✭✭Nib

Should be a decent weekend of action.

I think Moorefield will beat Naas but it won't be as easy as some might think. Naas are a decent side. The Moores are too dependent on Ronan Sweeney for scores in tight matches IMO.

Confey to pip Allenwood. Johnny Byrne has been in fine form for Allenwood. He should be on the Kildare panel for 2015.

The Maynooth v St Kevin's game is a tough one to call, particularly after 'Kevin's shocked Clane. However, there's every chance 'Kevin's will take theri foot off the gas now that they're safe. Maynooth by 1 or 2.

Carbury to beat Larries. Larries way too dependent on Podge Fogarty for scores. Carbury are an all round better team IMO.

In the Intermediate replays tomorrow night, I think Raheens will knock out Two Mile House. The House had their chance on Sunday but they blew it. Castledermot should beat Nurney. Should..

Milltown to beat Rathcoffey in the JFC QF replay. A bit pointless really as neither have a hope of winning it. Straffan are by far the best team in it. Seen a tweet after their demolition of Kilcullen (who would be considered their nearest rivals for the title) that said they could repeat what TMH did last year in winning an All Ireland and it wouldn't be a surprise to many in Kildare GAA circles.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,101 ✭✭✭klairondavis

Johnny Byrne was on the Kildare panel this year. He had an operation early on in the year and it took him a long while to get fully fit after. He's probably reaping the benefits of that freshness now.

I think the Moorefield forwards are actually a bit more potent than they were in years gone by. Tyrrell is a good source of scores for them in the half forward line and Éanna O'Connor looks like a very accurate player. Their backs and midfield don't look the dominant force that they once were. A lot of them are getting on a bit now and the mileage is beginning to tell. Daryl Flynn has barely got a look in with Kildare for a good while now and he would have been considered one of our most important players three or four years ago. Guys like Glavin and Naughton seem to have lost a bit of pace and David Whyte is a huge loss. It wouldn't surprise me if they still went all the way in Kildare this year but their chance to add another Leinster title has probably passed.

Straffan have some serious attacking talent for a junior club. Most of the senior clubs in Kildare would kill to have Austin Allen and Rob Kelly in their forward lines.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,088 ✭✭✭Nib

He looks in great shape. He has a huge engine on him and he can play ball too, could be a decent option at wing back.

I actually forgot about O'Connor he has been a huge addition alright. Flynn will be missing for the Naas game if I'm not mistaken. Was it a straight red he got v Athy? Would make that game a bit tougher. Naas are no mugs.

Any prediction on the IFC Relegation Final? Tough one to call. If Kill can stop Bobtown scoring goals, they'll have a chance. I actually enjoy watching relegation finals, both teams fighting for their lives.

Hard to see Ballymore avoiding the drop from Senior.
