Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I'm just back in Celbridge, some 3 hours after that thunderstorm. There are still piles of hail along the bases of the walls, etc, and I've just measured some surviving hail stones at up to 12 mm in diameter.

Here's the GFS forecast sounding for here at that time, showing decent SBCAPE and MLCAPE, and equilibrium temperature of below -35 °C - a good combination for hail and thunder. :)

Hail to the north, anvils to east, twisters to the south and downpours to the west.

7mm of rain in a 7 hour snizzle of total meh here last night (under cover of darkness) :(

Someone here must be spraying the place with weather-repellant.

Do you have a photo of a hailstone?
So I'd know what to look out for?

Some of the old folk here swear they saw one in June 1978......

Likewise. It's like the weather's teasing me recently. The Cb today basically gave me the finger as it passed agonisingly around my place in Belfield.

My video from earlier. Plane reports being hit by the lightning strike which my camera just about picks up the thunder from 4 mins onwards.

    Enjoy

Sferics just south of Mullingar ... Anyone there?! :)

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 18,150 Mod ✭✭✭✭DOCARCH

Hopefully we don't get a repeat of yesterday with everything slipping south to the west of Dublin! I am hoping showers building over Fermanagh have 'our' name on them! :)

Netweather picking up those seferics now. Hope there's more to come. http://www.netweather.tv/index.cgi?action=lightning;sess=

Great convection around today with Cumulonimbus clouds filling the skies in all directions. Just had a brief Hail shower but no thunder. That little bit of extra heat is helping with convection.

Sferic over Waterford City... radar not picking up any strong echoes in that direction though :/

I think tomorrow is the day for storms in the south and east.

Some good CAPE tomorrow, be interested to see what the 12z shows :D

My initial thoughts would be some storms particularly in the southeast

Still yet to catch any storms here in Cork. A few hail showers and some impressive towering clouds about. Caught a nice snap of a system moving past the east of the city about 2 hours ago.

Greater Dublin region would have done well had these moved this far east 2 hours ago, but the heat is dying and the CBs will start decaying very soon.

    BOOM! :D

Finally showers have arrived! No thunder though (yet).

Can see your little storm on radar - popped up out of nowhere - obviously Wicklow Mtn influence.

A few more showers still seem to be building to the NW of Dublin.

yeah its out to sea now rumbling but there's a trail of precip connected to it over lug following.
Its connected by a dark vein about 10 miles
    wide.
More hail now from under the vein

Looks similar on Radar grab to what the radar looked like for the waterspout the other morning.

Interesting shower to my north on radar.

I took a flight out over Co. Meath this evening and counted 5 separate showers in view at one stage. Airliners on frequency were requesting turns to avoid these showers. It was nice flying around and between them, a bit like walking in a forest with huge towering trees either side. Didn't have my camera with me so missed out on a nice photo opportunity.

A few sferics were picked up in Dublin and east Meath earlier. Glad I landed when I did! Nothing in the Dublin or Casement reports though.

That one to south Dublin is from the shower that escaped to the south of me earlier.

    *shakes fist (at sky)*

This is what I felt like doing today. Absolutely zilch here apart from a few drops. The most annoying thing is my parents back in Meath have taken a battering over the last few days.

From Weston. I only went to 2,000 ft, around 500 ft below cloud base, so no chance of seeing any overshooting tops from that angle!!
