Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Thinking of signing up to this, just to save myself scrawling the last 64 pages, can someone tell me is it possible to stay on the network after you hit 23? Are they clamping down on the age rule?

  • Registered Users Posts: 266 ✭✭mickey1985

No clamping down yet anyway. Id say just make sure to remember your new date of birth. Id imagine after the 4years are up(if they are still there then) they'l want you to switch to o2

When the 4 years are up surely there'll be nothing to stop us re-registering once we use a different email address?

If 48 is still around at that stage.

There was a similar yoof network called Blyk in UK, when people turned 25 they weren't thrown off the network, but if they left they couldn't re-join: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blyk

Who knows what the state of play will be then?

I would think you would have to port the number off 48 for a few days and then port back in under your new persona in order to continue receiving the benefits of 48.

They do the odd random spot check, asking you to send them a copy of your passport to activate the sim card.

How'd you know that? I doubt they can do that either. And anyway, even if they did ask you a passport copy, say no, cancel, and start again.

I seriously doubt that any real age restriction exists. It's an elaborate marketing ploy. Money is money at the end of the day, no matter the age of the person spending it!

I've definitely seen (very few) people receive letters in the post asking for a scan. They might keep your name/address on file. You could always doctor a photocopy.

Very true Schorpio, thats also the reason O2 weren’t bothering competing with other operators. They're letting 48Months and Tesco Mobile (O2 joint venture) offer cheaper rates on their network instead. It's similar to GiffGaff in UK, runs on the O2 UK network but sells cheaper calls, texts and data bundles using SIM only. That looks like a great little outfit, pity 48 Months isn't more like it .....

You can buy roaming add ons for calls and texts. Look at the website, that has the answer to all these questions.

Just wondering if a 48 SIM will work in a Tesco branded phone? Or would it need to be unlocked? I'm under the impression that Tesco / 48 are the same network-ish?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,473 ✭✭✭✭Our man in Havana

Nope. Phone needs to be unlocked.

Tesco/48/o2/Lycra sims are all different even though they use the o2 network.

Just noticing the VIP deal they do now... What's the general feedback on this? Is the internet speed up to scratch? 20e a month all in seems too good to be true!

Tempted to give it a try though, do they take long to port over your number?

I'm considering signing up. I'm not an expert at all on mobile contracts(I'm a PAYG User) so forgive me for any dumbass questions...

Can I use the 48 sim card on a Meteor mobile phone I have lying around(samsung toco) or do I have to unlock it first.

    Is this correct?
When registering for the first time I will receive a free sim.
I then register the sim and am assigned a new mobile number for it. I DO NOT want to port my current meteor number over.
I then top up online by €10 and I can start using the service.

You have to unlock it first. 48 do not do their own phones.

I know that some people have mentioned it before and it was covered earlier in this thread but does everybody on 48 see the "R" for roaming on the signal bars? Is this normal? I get this on mine and don't see 48 in the network list when I scan for mobile operators. Now I realise that they are a virtual operator using the O2 network but when I asked about this on the 48 forum they said (a) this was just a display issue and could be ignored or (b) I could get a new SIM and this would fix the problem (which I took to mean would get rid of the "R" and also list 48 as a network so I would be 100% sure that I was on the appropriate network and not at risk of being hit with additional charges). I tried (b) but the new SIM is the same. If (a) is correct then how do I know that I am on the "correct" network? And should that be O2?

    Hope that's clear. I have a feeling that I'm making a dog's dinner of asking a simple question! :o

Thanks CM. Not sure why 48 gave the impression that a new SIM would address these issues ("R" on signal bar and no "48" in network list)... I was holding off on porting my existing number over until I got further clarification.

Does it matter which network I select? Presumably I should (must?) choose O2?

Thanks again for the quick reply.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,473 ✭✭✭✭Our man in Havana

Yes. O2 is the network it must use.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,168 ✭✭✭TM

    OK-thanks.

I'm on a Vodafone Smart 858/Huawei U8160 running CyanogenMod 7.2. I can't see how to set O2 as the network to use "normally". Do I need to do this explicitly or just select it once and it will try to use that from then on?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,473 ✭✭✭✭Our man in Havana

You should be able to tell it to select the network automatically.

Had a look on the site and found this:
Where you have selected the VIP membership option you will also receive an allowance of 3GB of mobile internet. Your 3GB internet allowance will expire when your active monthly membership expires or when you have used your inclusive allowance, whichever should occur first.

Should you use your internet allowance before your active membership has expired we will notify you and you will be able to purchase additional internet add-ons.
    and:
18.1 It is important that all eligible 48 customers are able to access our services. This fair use policy applies where your use of the 48 Services is deemed by us to be excessive or unreasonable. The Charges are subject to a fair use threshold currently set at 3,000 minutes and 5,000 text messages for every monthly period that applies. Your use may also be considered by us to be excessive where you call more than 100 different phone numbers or text more than 200 different numbers over the course of any monthly period that applies.

The thresholds for the 48 internet options are:
VIP Membership - 3GB per calendar month
Weekly Internet Add On - 750MB per week.
Our internet options are available for use with your 48 SIM Card in your 48 handset only. Tethering or use of the 48 handset as, or the sim in conjunction with, a modem is not allowed and may be disabled.

If, 48 is of the opinion, at its absolute discretion, that your usage of the Service materially exceeds the Threshold over the applicable period, 48 may contact you to advise you that your usage exceeds its fair usage policy. If such excessive usage continues to exceed the Threshold after receipt of a request to desist from or alter the nature of such usage, 48 reserves the right at its absolute discretion, to suspend, modify or restrict your use of the Service or to withdraw your access to the Offer.

I am using CM10 on a SGS2. Data was working on Vodafone, but can't get it working on 48.:confused:

Apologies if I'm labouring the point here but ...

48 (via their discussion/support forum) say that I should see 48 as a separate network and should select that, that I should NOT select O2 and that their SIMs will not allow connection to anything but the 48 network. They also say that they're NOT and MVNO and that not all users will see the roaming "R". Some or all of this seems incorrect but the conflicting info is causing me confusion... I don't see 48 listed as a separate network. I can see Vodafone, O2, Meteor and Hutchinson and the only one that I can connect to/register with is O2 and thereafter I can receive calls and texts - albeit with the roaming "R" on the signal bars. I still haven't paid membership so can't make calls yet. Might just pay the tenner and try it out with the 089 number. Sure if it works I guess I can then port my 087 number...

I also got a text from them saying that they could not push settings for MMS/internet to my phone and that I need to configure these manually. Is this because I'm on a Vodafone Smart 858/Huawei U8160 running CyanogenMod 7.2 or something?
