Hi May79. Thanks for your reply. No i didnt go private. I have VHI hospital plan b which didnt cover it so i had waited a while for the appointment. I actually got a cancellation appointment as i wasnt due to be see until June. My gyno told me that getting pregnant wasnt off the cards, just a little more difficult with PCOS, and that when the time came he would put me on clomid. He also put it to me that within 6 months if he cant do anything for the fertility issues he would not be wasting my time or his and that he would just tell me to seek fertility treatment. TBH i was happy he was upfront and honest about it. You should ask them for a cancellation as thats what i did. Only called in two months earlier but better than nothing. Good luck with it all. Keep me posted. baby dust to you...

    Hi girls,

its been a long time since Ive posted on this thread. i was watching sybill and marting there in tv3 and there was a lady on it saying that dianette is great - from reading the thread however it seems it infact doesnt work for people. WTF!!! it really aggravates me that we are constantly been messed about.. doctors literally dont seem to know!

but girls, we do know one thing, that a low gi diet and exercise works!! its worked for me in the past, and has worked for maple too..

I was going to the gym before xmas and had cut out the crap were supposed to - and my frame shrank an unbelievable amount. then xmas came.......

now, im in the right frame of mind to start again. i cant afford the gym at the moment though but will walk and maybe go once a week to the gym and swim.

I was thinking we could all do it together? It could be like a "boards operation transformation".

i think the key is consistancy and motivation!!

we could write up our profiles with our weight and measurements and keep a diary of what were eating, what exercise were doing and could measure and weigh ourselves weekly or whatever. .and post it here. we can support each other.

ive tried this before, and its great - its just i feel out of the zone on the food diary thread as people without pcos, tend to say oh 'cut out ... dont do this... do that...' not understanding, hrough no fault of their own of course, what infact us ladies can and cant eat.

is anyone with me??? would anyone have any other ideas???

I hope some of you will be on for it :)

    Hey Alovera,

While I love your enthusiasm sometimes people don't want to post their weight etc especially seen as it's so much harder for people with PCOS.

Guys for anyone out there thinking of coming off their meds/pill etc, I say do it. I've been off my over a month now and have lost 10lbs and feel much better in myself the first couple of weeks I felt awful but after that it was great x

I'd be happy to do this, just in middle of exams this week, moving house and starting a new job next week!! Perhaps we could do it at some stage maybe on a seperate thread so this one is just for general PCOS discussion? Like a group of food diaries?

    Hi alovera,

You can count me in! I've only recently been diagnosed and im just starting off a low GI Diet. I think it's definately a lot easier to stay motivated when you have people supporting you/ other people to support! :)

It's to do with how insulin etc is absorbed/processed in the body and the fact that low GI foods release insulin more slowly and keep you fuller for longer. Loads of info on the net.

I went for a consultation (edit) for lazer hair removal where the woman explained that because of the PCOS my hair growth is a hormonal thing not the usual hair growth. She claimed that while it would work I wouldn't experience the same success as those without PCOS.

So i'm just wondering anyone used it?

Lol, yes they are right in what they are saying that because the hair growth is hormonal it may be less effective, however i've been getting it done for well over 2 years (I only go every 3 months or less now) and I never looked back, it's the best money I ever spent. Plus the girls where I go are really lovely and very helpful. Feel free to PM me if you need to know anything else x

    Hi girls,
hope you dont mind me looking for a bit of advice. I'm 28, have never had a regular menstrual cycle (except when on the pill but i know thats only a false cycle) and have had excess facial hair since my early teens. have a lot on the sides of my face, under my chin etc. some on top lip although i know thats very common. tha hair on my face grows very fast and i have to pluck every day which is wreaking havoc on my skin. hair also on lower back & grows fast on legs/bikini etc. had laser when i was 21 but didnt really work & when i came off pill half way through it it all came back. since then have been on dianette on advice of the laser clinic doc. beacuse of the hair & irregular periods i've had a scan & bloods twice to check for pcos, i think first when i was around 17 then at around 22/23. all came back clear & stayed on dianette since until last year. i didnt feel it made a diff but it must have bit cos the hair is impossible to keep up with since i came off it, plus the hair seems darker and thicker & i get alot of in grown hairs.
also have been suffering with bumps (sometimes painful) under the skin on my labia (sorry if thats tmi!) on and off or years. STI check was clear and when i have gone to the female doc at my gps she has been very dismissive and first said it was 'just like a spot you get on your face' and the second time said it was a complication of thrush! i didnt even think i had thrush and had never heard of this before. i spoke to a girl with pcos who said things like this could be linked to it but cant find info online at at all that says this.
anyway sorry for the long rambling post, my main question is is it possible that i could have pcos and that it hadn't developed or could have been missed on the scans i had years ago? i know i sound paranoid but if i do have it would prefer to know sooner rather than later! Thanks for reading!

Hey all, Id def be interested in a support group / forum where up put up details of weight etc thos maybe we could have code for that :D Since my last message, i was back at gyno. Didnt ovulate last month they told me. Have started on Metformin for the next three months to see if that kick starts things. Just upped my dose of it yesterday and feeling quite sick since tho they told me to expect that. Has anyone else been put on this for PCOS? , how did you get on while on it and did it help? any advice appreciated. Thanks

Yep, i've been on it. It made me quite sick for about two weeks until I got used to it. But it definitely helped once used in conjunction with low GI diet.

Hi girls, g*d I'm so pleased to find this thread! I've had pcos for years but luckily for me seems to be a v mild version esp after i managed to lose about 4 stone a few years ago, tk g*d.

The single worst thing with this for me is hair loss. Am practically bald in patches, scalp is sore, red, blister etc etc. Hairy chin and neck too. Oh also still quite fat despite the weight loss mentioned above, have a stubborn stone and half hanging around my belly and waist :(

I used to go to the consultant out in Blanchardstown (can't recall his name) but it was a useless clinic, gave it up in despair when one of his interns (or whatever) asked me how many times a day did I take dianette!!! He was lucky I didn't whack him one to be honest. Never went back.

I'm going to ask my GP for a referral to a specialist next time I'm with him and I'm wondering who would be good? I've never had any treatment apart from laser (def helped, got rid of the black wiry hairs at least!) and being on dianette for years (doesn't seem to help much with hair issues tbh) Some of them know nothing and care less and I don't want to maste my time or money.

I'd love to hear about your own experiences with the medical profession, pm if that's more appropriate.

Also any natural remedies you have used and found good, saw palmetto for example - is it any use?

    Many thanks,

    ellee :)

ps what is this metformin i keep hearing so much about? Is it a new development?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,416 ✭✭✭Danniboo

    Hey guys,

Any words of wisdom, came off my pill a few months ago, since the weight has fallen, my moods are still a bit up and down but generally I feel an improvement. Question, i'm back up in the hospital next month for the first time in a year, should I consider going on Metformin or just steer clear of everything.

i think metformin works for some ppl and not for others. no harm on going on it for a few months to see how you get on.

I have pcos, although im not overweight, im 8'7ibs. I was on dianette for 12yrs, came off it 8 months ago, my periods are now all over the place. I have high LH , high testosterone and loads of small cysts on my ovaries. My doctor put me on metformin on 8th May this yr - i got a period on 28th May and not had another one since so im not sure if the metformin is working for me:( im going back to the doctor next week as ill be on the metformin 3 months then, she said she will put me on clomid along with the metformin. Has anyone else been on metformin for a number of months and still not got a period??
p.s im trying to conceive since coming off the dianette last november

Metformin is a diabetic drug for ppl who are Insulin resistant. Women with PCOS frequently have "insulin resistance", Metformin (Glucophage) helps your body to transport glucose with relatively less insulin, thus lowering your insulin levels. high levels of either glucose or insulin in your blood contributes to obesity, heart disease, infertility, as well as the development of diabetes.

I have been on Metformin for 3 months now. It didn't induce af for me. I then had to take provera and it brought on af (none for 8 months previously) The next month af arrived without assistance. However, i am piling on weight. Gi or not it doesn't seem to be helping. Middle is worst affected. I shouldn't complain esp if medication is helping me with the internal problems but it's a girl thing to worry about weight...

i was at my doctor last nite to tell her that i still havent had a period even with the metformin/glucophage, she said the metformin should have regulated my periods by now. i asked her about putting me on clomid and she said not until i get a period. i asked her about the provera to bring on a period and she said no, that i should wait to naturally have a period.

Anyway, she gave me a referral letter for the subfertility clinic in Clane Hosital. Has anyone else been to Clane with PCOS, im wondering what procedures they carry out and the costs. I would appreciate any advise/feedback

I think consultant fees are 180e for your first visit and 120e after I think.

Anytime i've looked for an appointment with an endocrinologist it's only been a couple of weeks, never went though. Not sure for the other clinic but think they're quite quick. Would you let me know if you find them helpful, I am thinking of going private myself.

Hi Danniboo, just got a call from Clane, she said waiting list is 7-8 weeks at the moment (which i think is great, i was expect months not weeks), also - consultation is €180. if the doctor takes ultasound that day its an extra €110, lucky enough i just got one done in Tallaght hosp few weeks ago so she said i could bring them results along.
wat are you taking for ur pcos to date?
