Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I tried to run serious Sam last night but upon starting it it said it couldn't verify my drivers. I continued anyway to horrendous play back. I had my graphics card turned on but i didn't optirun the game. Could this be the issue?

It's a bit awkard to run using optirun. You have to start steam then add the steam libraries to the LD path. Look at the steam forum for details

Setting up games to run with optirun is the biggest issue so far for me. Every game is slightly different.

Anyone tried prime / primus instead of optirun? Have heard the performance is much better

    the year of linux gaming
    http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTI2Mzk
In 2013 we will see Valve Software bring their other popular titles to Linux like Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Half-Life 2, etc. We'll also see other advancements to the Steam Linux client and Source Engine. It's also not a pipe-dream to think that for future Valve games (Half-Life 3?) that there will be same-day (or near same-day) Linux support and that their new game engine is being designed with Linux in mind

Does phornoix know something we dont?
they have in the past and openly said we cant say more.

I tried doing what was suggested. Didn't work. Kept saying the sam3 executable could not be found even thought I was in the directory.

Also installed primus but I'm having problems with it and using the experimental 310 driver.

I'll keep an eye out for your driver there a site that I was linked to that gave them As .deb
    What OS are you running
Can't link till tomorrow , on phone and can't remember it's name

I had to previously alter the optirun config to get it to work with 310 but I haven't found a similar tutorial regarding primusrun so I just altered a file to try direct it towards "nvidia-experimental-310" instead of "nvidia-current".

    Using ubuntu 12.10

In an exchange on Twitter between Ryan Gordon (Ported The killing floor and Red Orchestra 1 to linux ( under unreal 2.5)) and John Gibson, the President of Tripwire Interactive, there's now hope for seeing a Linux port of Red Orchestra 2. Gibson congratulated Gordon on getting Unreal Engine 3 to work on Linux and says that "we should talk" after Gordon mentioned "RO2."

It had better be ubuntu for android. I keep getting miffed when I check the page and see that they haven't released a release date yet!

it raised just over $3800 of its $950,000 goal. Dont expect it that soon

plus from what i can read, it seams to be something 'new' not adding to an existing product design - could be wrong though

EDIT: I Thinks its a smartphone design - why?

    pun on touch ?

    EDIT 2: deffently phone

Ah Ubuntu for Android is different to that. I wouldn't see the reason to shell out for an unknown brand when Ubuntu have told me that my HTC will run it some time "in 2012". :)

I think you're right with the "touch" thing though. I'll tell you what though...if it's ubuntu for android, my holiday time suddenly became zero. :)

Yeah, I don't know if the linux console idea will happen, it may be too soon to have a console released that will have far far less games than the competition..

Huge growth over January 2012 - a couple month ago it was ZERO!

If steam goes ahead with linux based console the stats might change in very short time.

Picked up Serious Sam a few days ago. Co-op is a blast (pardon the pun), especially with the kamikaze onslaught in the first level! I'm tempted to pick up Superbrothers: Swords and Sorcery EP too at some stage, looks v interesting.

Has anybody found any bugs yet? Steam chat has been a bit buggy for me - occasional window focusing issues causing strange keyboard shortcut conflicts. Otherwise it seems fine so far :)

Well I've been a linux user for a while now, Steam is new for me though :) I'm hoping for some ports of classic Valve games, rather than go through the bother of running them on Wine. Have they released any news on Half Life / Portal etc? Or do you think they'll only support new games?

The Only news i have on portal was that offical beta testers of the limited beta, including myeslf , were given portal 1 , however it does not work on linux , nor is there any betas of any description available

Steam Hardware & Software Survey: December 2012

Here is how things looked like for December 2012 on Steam, in order of biggest to smallest share:

    Windows 7: 70.47 percent
    Windows XP: 10.44 percent
    Windows vista: 6.96 percent
    Windows 8: 6.93 percent
    OS X: 3.72 percent
    Ubuntu: 0.8 percent

Breaking down the numbers even more, here is how each operating system version fared:

    steam_december_2012.png

While it may not be immediately clear, Windows 8 was the only version of Microsoft’s desktop operating system to gain share, as gamers spent the holiday season ditching Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP for the latest and greatest. At the same time, many chose to go with OS X as well as Ubuntu.

Don't mind me if already posted.

ive found it ussaly takes a month till people get pissed off and format windows 8 - next month i think this will be different. - imo

small jump in windows 7 32 bit though

Good chance now that I will buy one of these. Hell...I might even replace my HTPC with it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,028 ✭✭✭d31b0y

I wouldn't be throwing out my HTPC just yet.

If this is to be good enough to play the newest games and have a half decent shelf life, then I can see these being on the pricey side.

Valve might be able to absord some of the price, much like Sony and Microsoft do with there consoles. The difference is, the MS and Sony consoles are completely closed hardware and can only run approved software.

If this is as open as they say it will be, and I see no reason to think otherwise, there is no way valve will be able to absorb anywhere near as much as the closed competitors hardware.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,506 ✭✭✭shizz

I'm not too sure what to think of it to be honest. I think I'll only really be able to understand what they're trying to do and maybe see their idea when it gets nearer to coming out because at the moment I can't really see what they are going for.
