Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    I've also heard similar rumours.

I believe the race for President will have more participants than the 09/10 election where 5 people ran. Right now, I'd believe Rockett, Kelly O'Brien, Canning to be certs. I'd feel that Kenny is still up in the air between running for re-election either as President/Education or finishing her degree. I had heard previously that Lily Carroll was considering running for CSO. Now that the position is defunct I wonder will she run for another? I did overhear several students on Thursday say that Adam Moursey was considering running for a position, though I doubt it with him being in 3rd year although I barely know him only through C&S dealings so I could be wrong. Would Enda Gallery run again? He ran a cheap campaign last year from the pictures I saw (I was on Erasmus) but he pulled in a huge amount of support. He could be a strong candidate if he chose to run. I firmly believe that Deirdre Wilson will run for something, probably welfare. If she does, I think she'll do a terrific job.

There will always be a few curveballs though that barely anyone was expeting.

With all that competition there is bound to be a lot of showing off going on and I hope that there will be a few blogs keeping up with the action like www.ulsuelect.com last year.

    That was great reading...

I heard Aoife Kenny is definitely running and Kelly O'Brien is definitely not. Who knows though? have to wait til close of nominations to tell for sure.

I think either have the skills and experience to be great president.

I remember Kelly posting on FB that she was looking for jobs for when she's done. Obviously that's not exactly a confirmation either way, but I doubt she'll run. Shame, I honestly think she'd make a great president.

to be honest i dont think kelly would be suited to the role

as president you have to be a lot more restrained than what she has been
no doubt she would be capable work wise

if comms was still around and she was running i would vote for her no question

Granted the whole Paddy Rockett-Facebook shíte wasn't exactly her crowning glory this year, and her posts on this forum in particular were less than helpful, I believe she must have learned from these mistakes. And I don't think anyone could argue that she's probably achieved the most of her manifesto promises of any sabbat this year. She'd be a cert for my vote if CO was still around, and she'd be definitely up there among the serious contenders if she were to go for President.

(Obviously, this is just my own view, and should not be construed as that of ULFM, Newslunch, ULSU, or any other such shíte as that)

Seeing as nominations are soon to open, has anyone actually heard any rumours about who is running? Usually by this time there are about twenty different names floating about. This year seams to be a bit on the light side.

Here is what I have heard through the grapevine:

President - Aoife Kenny, Adam Moursy

Welfare - Eamonn Boland, Tighearnan Noonan

    Education - Paddy Rockett

Tighearnan Noonan would be wasted as Welfare Officer. He should run for president. He would win by a landslide, only man for the job in many peoples eyes

David Hartery took out a form for ULSU President and has been collecting signatures all afternoon.

I really hope everyone wears Silly Hats through Week 9, regardless of the motion being passed or not :D May have to come up for the week and wear one for utter laugh of it anyway :P

Heard dave hartery, aoife Kenny and Adam Moursey are all going for president.

Think Moursey would be a great president, big clubs and socs vote behind him as well, would be some battle between him and kenny of them. i'd say moursey would edge it.
have to admit i have had only a handful of dealings with dave but don't think he'd be up the job. not much by way of a personality, reminds me of the ginger lad from last yr, very introverted not very sociable.

Not much news on the other two seats, heard deirdre wilson is definitely going for welfare and paddy rockett for education. wilson picked up her application form today according to sources in the SU.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 102 ✭✭johnryano

Leaoj can you declare any allegiance? Moursey seems like bit of a jack the lad character don't know if he'd be suitable for the professional rigeurs of president.

Aoife kenny on the other hand is little miss professional I would have no doubts about her suitabity. Probably the only sabbatical officer not to disgrace themselves this year.

I would also say that Tara did a fantastic job this year, and I most certainly would not say she was in any way, shape or form a 'disgrace'

On a side not - Over heard today that Lily Carroll took a form out!

Isn't she the one who made false accusations against Patrick Rockett?

If so, she certainly did disgrace herself.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 102 ✭✭johnryano

No I don't think kenny was on record saying anything about rockett. I won't comment on the welfare officer

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 61 ✭✭leaoj

I may have a horse in the welfare race. If/when that person makes the decision to run I will declare my allegiance. My candidate is not deirdre wilson I can state.

I have no affiliation or allegiance to any of the proposed education or presidential candidates.

Can't comment on this years sabbat team, engaged with kenny a handful of times; little mrs professional she may be but can't say she struck me as little mrs personality.

Moursey is very competent I gather from grapevine word boomeranging from clubs and socs and ul rugby society. studying law as well i gather so perhaps he may have a bit more decorum and self restraint than some of the other lot that held office this year.

wonder has hartery much of a team put together. can't see him having much backing. he's up against two powerhouses in kenny and moursey who will have serious su and c&s backing.

all in all, a good two weeks lined up ahead of us.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 102 ✭✭johnryano

Well at least with kenny you can be guaranteed she'll look the part. She always dresses impeccably. Politics is like the restaurant business presentation is 90% of it. Always wears designer broga too

I saw Paddy Rockett and David Hartery with a form today. I know Dave is running for President (as I signed his form), but am I right to assume that Paddy's running for the same thing?

  • Registered Users Posts: 31 bambismom

Pretty sure the Election and Referendum Board will have something to say about the fact Kony's campaign started a week ago. Name is everywhere by now.... other contenders should just bow out really.

So you said you knew that Wilson wasn't in the SU. That would be because you are the person in question. That's what you did there.

I have too much spare time on my hands.......

I reckon Moursey will beat Kenny. Lot of bad sentiment towards the SU team this year. People won't forget that when it comes to voting time.

    leaoj wrote: »

I can confirm that I am not running. After a lot of time and consideration, I have decided it is not the path I want to take in life.

I have great admiration for the people who have put their lives and souls into the SU over the years. I have been honoured to call some of them friends and think they all did the best they could do regardless of criticism. The sabbatical positions are tough roles to fill and I think it will be even more difficult next year with only three positions. I wish the people about to step into those roles all the best.

That said, I am willing to campaign for someone and have a lot of ideas that I am willing to share. I did write a manifesto in first year and sadly many of the issues are the same. So if any budding welfare candidates want a hand just let me know. :)

Now that I've upset the apple cart ever so slightly leaoj, can you tell us who your rumoured candidate is?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 102 ✭✭johnryano

jesus bambi you'd swear it is the rose of tralee you're running for.

if you think you can do it better why don't you do it? why you waiting for someone else?

if not you who? if not now when?
