Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Probably not a "bargain" as such. but handy to pick up; Tesco have a 20m coil of galvanised wire in with their gardening section at the moment for €2.99.

    I got this yesterday
    It's awesome
You can set the angle its stable and the results are perfect
Set of spare stones is 6 euros
I have a lot of knives and can use an Indian oil stone pretty well but this system is simply foolproof

Aldi this Thursday March 21st "Happy Camping" promotion.

Nothing to get that excited about but still some handy cheap camping stuff. I'll be taking a look at the one man tent (€26) and will probably buy one of the 3W CREE LED torches. I probably don't need another dry bag (44l €14) but might get one if the quality is good.

One thing I will take a look at is the folding BBQ (€13) to see if it will make a handy wood stove for cooking with dry drift wood off the beach. I think I looked at the same one in the UK (probably branded Gelert or Mountain/Peak something) and thought it was just a bit too thin.

The dry bags are usually good quality alright, I've got a few knocking about and never been let down.

I thought the same thing about the bbq, looks very thin

So get it pitched and let us know what you think.:)

The main things I want to know are a) does it have a separate fly sheet and if it does b) can it be pitched fly sheet first.

    Thanks

Would also be interested in opinions on that tent please, thanks.

    Thanks

I spent last night in the tent got few showers of rain and no leaks.
It has a separate flysheet but you have to put up inner first then attach fly on top. Has a single fibreglass hoop system.
Seems well cut, drapes well and stitching is ok in general but in places looks a bit rushed but I have issues with webbing loops for the tent pegs. The webbing only extends to depth of hem which is only half inch .inner tent web loops only single line of stitching. I only saw this when it was hanging up to dry this afternoon.I don't think these will last frankly. Should be ok for occasional use but not for extended trip unless you are a seamstress!
On other hand its really light and it looks very well.inner tent is mainly black mesh so easy to see out off with main flap open.
All in all its a pity they tried to scrimp on the webbing otherwise it would be a great bargain.
    Hope this helps

Thanks. Was it comfortable in there? Could you lie out straight/turn over/sit up/lie on your front and read a book etc?

I had no problem lying out straight. I'm 180 cm and I had room behind my head for binos books some food etc. No prob either turning over or leaning up against pillow to read. Did not sit up cross legged if that's what you mean so don't know about that. I had the aldi self inflation matress under me( which was very comfortable) with room to spare .there is room for small day sack say 30l inside the tent i think .there is not much room in vestibule.
Only issue was foot room . I take size 11 boots (I took them off) and found the lower end of tent a bit tight. Cut your toenails you will need the clearance!
Getting in and out is awkward. I should have brought a plastic bag to crawl in and out on.

    Thanks for that.

Big enough, must throw mine up when the weather improves. I cant get mine to weigh more than 1.2 KG on any scale no matter how I balance it, even standing straight up in a saucepan directly on both scales, all parts and packaging present.

How much do the pegs weigh? Often you can trim a good bit of weight replacing steel pegs with aluminium ones.

sorry, yeah pole, it's better to have a metal pole rather than fibreglass. I'm wondering if it would be worth getting a pole from another tent and using it instead.

It looks fine if it did the job and is light enough it would be great

An update video on the Aldi tent, the stitching is poor as are a few of the other bits. For that price, what do you expect though (and it can be modded).

    Looks tempting.
    German site has more info
    Lidl.de
Seems it rated to +5.5c Minimum
    +9.7 comfortable
At least its same price here as in Germany.
Unlike some of other offers - strange that (Schatzinzel?)

I use a sleeping bag on the ferry forward and back to uk. Saves me the £40 for a cabin. I saw that attachment on fb during the week. Makes sense

Irish ferries on the Pembroke Dock to Rosslare run I've never been cold enough to need a sleeping bag. I sleep better laid out across three seats than I do at home. Normally use the drivers lounge but never noticed anywhere else on the "boat" is any colder.

If anyone is looking for one of those Aldi camping 40l rolling water barrels it might be worth checking Aldi's reduced section as had reduced the last few in my local one. Final sale price was €17 and their might be some left in some stores still.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,764 ✭✭✭my3cents

If anyone spots the one man tents reduced can they post asap? I don't really need one but if they reduce them a bit I'll be forced to buy one and I'd noticed that there are still a lot left in my local Aldi (15 -20) so they might just end up reduced?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,764 ✭✭✭my3cents

Still 15 tents in the local Aldi. Lets hope no one buys them :)

I did buy the Lidl sleeping bag liners today. They are quite thick and bulky so should add a bit of warmth to a sleeping bag. Handy on their own in really hot weather when you just want something to cover you but not much. Most of the cheap sleeping bags are rated at 2-3 seasons use and with one of these liners I think you could safely make that 3 seasons. Not really a bargain but still a useful item.

Picked up a few in Tesco today for 1.99 euro.
Labeled as 1.99 and scanned at that price.

    Same ones amazon 8.01 stg.

So could be worth checking your local Tesco .

Thats a good deal. I know that particular head torch turns up on special offer every now and again €3.49 is the cheapest I've ever seen them.

If you use them a lot the elastic eventually goes in the head band and I find them easy to switch on in your pocket but still one of the best head torches around for the price.

Yeah could not go wrong at that price.
Mine will be thrown into the BOBS.
Probably better to only put batteries in the headlight when going use it ,if it comes on in pocket easily.

Regarding a previous post of yours, still 10 plus one man tents in my local aldi.Interesting to see if will be discounted.

    Great idea for a thread!
Two obvious ones to keep an eye on are the Lidl, Aldi offer pages for anything coming up that may be useful. Another place to check out is DealExtreme. Quality can vary, but they have a huge range of products and shipping is free on everything I've looked at on the site. Especially check out the outdoor activities/camping sections, and there are plenty of torches, paracord, collapsible water bottles, fire steels etc.

I had ordered some button cell batteries and a high mAh USB battery from DealExtreme. The cheaper button cells arrived but I am yet to see the USB backup battery and some not so cheap button cell batteries for medical equipment! I was caught out for over €60.00 and change... This is a site that should be black-listed every where!! Good luck if you place an order with DealExtreme!!! :-(

I can not remember as it was quite a while ago! I did try to run it down, but I had no success. All the emails said that they were shipping my stuff, and even on the account page said it was being processed. But I think they were processing the lithium for the batteries!
They had even told me that the shipping company refused to send anything with lithium batteries, BUT! The very same company had just delivered 150 lithium button cell batteries a week or so before! Can't quite figure that one out!!! :-/

Lidl have work gloves at mo for 6.99 for anyone that's interested. very well made and fits like the proverbial. Bought them last year used em for cycling, garden chainsawing, metalwork woodwork, bushcraft. Still going strong, bought 2 more pair this morning.

  • Registered Users Posts: 496 ✭✭lostboy75

have to say i do like the gloves as well for that price. don't know if its my hands or what, but i burst them at the finger tips usually. so don't get too long out of them. have one set of more expensive work gloves. (little over 20 IIRC) bought them as there was a deal and you got a "free" cap with them. could not resist!
they are better gloves, but not 3 times better so will be back to Aldi to stock up again this time.

My problem is the opposite . Hands are small so most cheap gloves too big. Lidl do size 7 and 8 which fit me well.

Looks like final reductions in Aldi on the one man tents now €14 and sleeping bag liners now €4. Don't bother with the mini 2 for a euro key chain LED torches all the stock is ancient and all the batteries are flat.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,764 ✭✭✭my3cents

Still 10 tents (€14.50) and some sleeping bag liners in Dungarvan Aldi today.

Found Lemons in Lidl only 49cents for a net of three today (normally 75c) don't think I'll get them any cheaper so bought 10 nets to give preserving lemons a go as a follow up to my pickled eggs.

Also in Lidl and a handy item to have for an emergency is their repair putty (by pattex) €2.99 for metal, I've seen it successfully used on all manner of things from pipe work to fuel tanks. Just cut off a bit the size you need work it (wear disposable gloves) and mold it around the area to be repaired. Not a long term repair but a good get out of jail item. Not sure how long it lasts but I've kept it over a year before and it was still usable. Just put a tube of it in my household emergency grab box.

Husqvarna are doing good deals with money off some off their chainsaws. Picked up a Husqvarna 435 today with 135 euro off the retail price. Has something to do with the National Ploughing Championships. So if you're looking for a new chainsaw then pop into a Husqvarna store and see what they have.
