I don't see the problem with Aldi/Lidl food like some people here. Most of it as the same quality as tesco/branded products. Everything in there is grand! Keep in mind I don't eat meat...

Exactly, that's why I shop in supervalue. Superior products, good prices and Irish!!

^ all the same to me. That being said I usually go to dunnes, because it's only down the road!

I couldn´t give a monkeys where the stuff is from.

If it´s a reasonable price and of a quality acceptable to me, it´s going in my trolley.

    Buy most things in aldi

    Except

Mayo, ketchup, conditioner, dishwasher tabs. They all have to be branded!

For some reason I only like the toothpaste out of lidl so I always go there just for that.

I buy the cheap loo roll and I've never felt the desire for the soft stuff!

The Aldi dishwasher tabs have won awards and since I've tried them I'm not using anything else.

For me it's shoes, toothpaste, clothes and tyres

Yes, proven by they're own team..

I judge a person and their home by what washing up liquid sits by their sink. If it ain't Fairy, i'm out of there. God only knows what else they skimped on.

I don't think I've ever found a superior product in Supervalu than Aldi or Lidl. And Aldi and Supervalu would both be supermarkets I'd go to regularly (live close to both). A basket of groceries costs much more in Supervalu and the quality is either equal or worse than Aldi.

I'm sure you'll say your standards are higher like you did up-thread, but that would be quite arrogant, don't you think?

Meat and fish. Neither are actually cheaper in a supermarket, so I can't for-the-life-of-me understand why people don't go to a good butchers or fishmongers and get a much better product for the same price.

    Coffee, bread, shoes, jeans.

No offence but the people saying super-processed foods and cleaning products are just responding to marketing imo. Sometimes the brand name is better, sometimes Lidl or Aldi are better, more often there's no difference.

Most people would agree that in terms of clothes, brand names are always best. Dunnes and Penneys clothes look nice on the shelf but after one or two washes, they go quite raggy. Those shoes you get in Penneys never last longer than a month. In contrast, I have a pair of Dubarrys that were €100 four years ago and are still going strong today.

Also, sports gear. The faux stuff they sell in Aldi is crap.

There are a few things that I refuse to budget on and it annoys the crap out of me when my housemates don't.

Toilet paper - Why budget? The cheaper stuff doesn't last as long, you need to use more and it feels terrible.
Dish Washing Liquid - just buy fairy. It lasts forever.
Aluminium Foil - Just buy the big 30m heavy duty stuff.

parachutes... no point in buying factory seconds... a bit like going for a budget a heart by-pass

    You think I should upgrade?

Think what you want and enjoy your pound shop products but I won't even shop in tesco never mind aldi and lidl. Supervalue is by far and away the best supermarket in this country they have quality, good prices and are a proper irish supermarket supporting local jobs, people and suppliers.

So much of the Lidl/Aldi snobbery is just plain ridiculous.

Lidl's bakery isn't bad, it's a lot better than Tesco's, and the less sad about the crap that's sold as bread in Dunne's the better. MnS's is much better again though.

Lidl also has better fruit and veg then either Dunne's or Tesco's. Anything that is in season in Ireland is actually from Ireland. I've seen Spanish strawberry's on sale in Tesco's in summer! Tropical fruit is usually pretty good in Aldi/Lidl and total crap in Dunne's/Tescos. Supervalu beats the lot though. MnS too, but the prices are feckin extortionate.

Also I love the people arguing for the superiority of branded sliced pan, washing-liquid and in one case; potato waffles.

It's not even close to the best. Carries quite a limited range, for starters. Have been amazed at the things I can't find there. You can't get everything you want to Aldi/Lidl, but you really, really can't get everything you want in Supervalu. It's the worst of the supermarkets for having a decent selection of even commonplace ethnic foods - I'm not talking about specialist stuff here.

And the quality of its produce is nothing special. I'd go to butchers for meat, or failing that, Aldi.

I'm not paying stupid prices for something I stick up may arse.

But, I will admit, I don't "budget" on my computer equipment. Better stuff really does last longer there. IMHO.
