I saw that too a few weeks ago (outside Arnotts side entrance).
It's a "softride" frame albeit a very poor quality one!!!.
These were popular ish for a while in the early 90's especially among those less fortunate than ourselves (ie triathletes).

They were supposed to make a smoother ride but simply made for a very "bouncy" one....

    Something like this

Yup, outside arnotts, that's the one!

10k from home my muguard tried to eat my panniers. Rear wheel locked up coming out of a roundabout, luckily the traffic was light.

I thought the SKS mudgaurds were ****ed, they were in a contorted shape, but true to their indestructible nature I was able to bend them back to shape by hand.

It would have been a long 10k walking at the end of the day when tired :o

Saw an epic commuter race in progress last evening on the way home from work. If you ride for Orwell and were heading over harolds cross bridge circa 17:45 then I applaud you, you won the intermediate sprint.

Driving up to the bridge, traffic unusually light, in the mirror I see a chap in a red and black jersey giving it some gas on a race bike. A guy comes around him in an orwell jersey wearing a shoulder bag by the looks of it, down in the drops and going for the breakaway. Red and black rider puts the hammer down and gives chase. At this point I was going up and over the bridge and the two flew past me in full on race mode. I saw it up until the nursing home and orwell was still leading out...

There's inter-club commuting league points for that.

Commuter racing in your club jersey. The shame.

If that person is identified, they'll be getting some Cowboy of the Year points for that.

    Question.
Is there any way of adjusting the 'tension' (for want of a better word) on a LH 6700 Ultegra shifter?
It was always a bit 'heavy' but I'm finding it hard changing to the big ring now since breaking the wrist...really have to push hard.
The 6600 shifter on my other bike is much easier, can change easily with minimum force.

Has it always been like that?

Yeah, just finding it harder now since breaking the left wrist.
The 6600 is a breeze in comparison, can shift the lever with two fingers.

Its really more to do with the front mech spring rather than the shifter, unbolt the cable from the mech and then try it,just keep a bit of tension on the inner cable with your fingers so the cable barrell stays where it should in the shifter.

Whats the best position to keep your feet at when going down hills? Ive had a few scary moments hopping off the saddle on a fast descent

Keep your legs straight and your feet behind you.:D

Seriously though if on a really fast descent and it's straight I'll have my peddles levels. I tend to stand up every so slightly when doing this so I have my weight on the peddles and my arse just inch or two off the saddle.
Keeps you from getting a jolt if you hit a rough patch or bumps. It means my legs are acting as shock absorbers for my body. If I'm familiar enough with the road and it's smooth I'll just sit and enjoy the ride.
The other obvious thing is corning, turn left>left pedal up\turn right>right pedal up.

Ardennes1944, Oh, and are you clipped into your pedals? Sounds like you're not...

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,238 ✭✭✭Ardennes1944

i am clipped in. tonight was my first spin with spd-sl set up although it happened before them and happened once tonight

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,718 ✭✭✭AstraMonti

If you are going fast then some bumps are inevitable as the roads are by far not perfect, just be prepared and act accordingly if needed. I actually enjoy them in a strange masochistic way.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,238 ✭✭✭Ardennes1944

i do always expect the bumps as most of my spins are back roads anyway but if there was a way of minimising the impact through pedal position/technique i wished to know :)
i also always thought my bike was a little too big for me but tonight it seemed to fit much better with the shoes. general set up of my body on it was much more comfortable!

I've read that because the cables on 6700 are hidden under your handlebar tape they go through tighter bends resulting in more friction and poorer shifts. Dunno if it's bull or not.

The Clontarf cycle path is so much more enjoyable when there are no dog walkers, joggers, kids on scooters... Must get out before sunrise in future!

I did a search and don't think this has been posted yet: Mario Cipollini advises his women's cycling team. Some nice photos.
