My local exchange, MRO1_E01, goes live on the 10th Aug, although we're to far away for efibre hopefully the ADSL rack will be transferred over from radio to fibre backhaul in the process and remove the congestion that currently exists.

I would hope they do. It would certainly make their packages more attractive if you can get faster speeds than the local WISPs, especially if you are not in the first 100,000 homes for FTTH or open eir's 2017-2020 rollout.

    Congrats neighbourino :p.

Our exchange (Rearcross) is still down for "Autumn 2016". Unless they provide ADSL2+ as well as eVDSL, then even that won't matter a sh1te to me cos I'm a gnats pube over 2KM from the exchange. :(

Looks like they have done some updates to the FibreRollout map.

My local exchange to get activated on the 10th of August :)

Is it wirth ringing Vodafone to put in an order now or should I wait until the 10th?

Me too and I can't wait, it's over two years late at this stage. I've been living with these speeds for far too long

hopefully Eir can start focusing more on the FTTH rollout soon, that was a huge total of FTTC cabinets during one week. The amount of remaining cabinets is starting to look alot lower now all of a sudden.

61 cabinets totalling 10.6k people in one week really is staggering.

111 exchange cabs left to do, a good few of which are small/don't serve too many people so may be long fingered.

There's also plenty of villages where the main E01 exchange cabinet has been enabled and now there are 1/2 cabs to be done.

Then it's on to the first 100k homes as part of the rural FTTH rollout (which I'll begin progress work on shortly)

Yeah - the Attenuation shows 60 is possible, but are you connecting to an exchange rather than a cab, maybe? If so, the lower result may be due to the fact there's no vectoring on yet.

and 43 of those 111 cabs earmarked for completion over the next 5 weeks or so. They should be completed within a few months with the exception of cabs that having planning issues.

Hopefully this is already enough for Eir to start making more progress on FTTH during August.

Is there only 111 left to do though? From a quick look at the map around Cork city there's 16 cabs left to go live, some of which aren't on the above list at all.

Hopefully none of the remaining ones will be long fingered, the exchange I'm on in Rushbrooke serves 400 houses and is fairly scandalous to be one of the last to be done.

There are still cabs around Lucan that have not been enabled and I'm constantly perplexed as to where you guys get the info that ye quote as I can never see any of this.

The cabinet nearest my house is LCN1_024.
All I ever see is it "planned". Am I missing something?

LCN1_025 and LCN1_036 which are behind my house are live and have been for ages. Is there any reason that that one cabinet would have been left out?

The KN guys have been out to my local exchange a couple of times and Eircom have told us over the phone that we should have it by the end of the summer but I'm very sceptical as we are quite rural.

One more question - I'm about 500m away from the cabinet (and about 260m away as the crow flies) as per the map and I'm also on a blue line. Will I be (virtually) guaranteed to benefit from fibre speeds if/when the cabinet becomes active?

Would you be able to say what exchange it is Paully D, even by PM?

It might bring you some good news after another bad day as a Sunderland fan.

Yeah. We've had open eir lads at our exchange regularly over the last year. There was some problem with the racks (I couldn't get more than that) but the scuttlebutt is that the exchange will get it by September.

If you are on a 500m line from a cab, then you could get 80-90Mbps (lucky-ducky). Have you any form of ADSL at the moment? If so, can you post the line stats (Downstream Attenuation in particular). We can approximate your line length with that.

If you did get eirFibre at those speeds, then I'm not sure the Blue line will mean too much to you in the immediate future, but might do in 3-5 years.

No point asking for ADSL stats unless you know the distance from cab to exch.

I'm on about exchange cabinets only, the E01 ones where there are villages/areas with no access at all as of yet.

There's plenty of cabs, even in Cork city and Dublin city that aren't done yet.

I presume eir will finish most of these exchanges, then move onto the FTTH rollout and finish the remaining cabs/exchanges/cabs that have issues.

Can someone in the know tell me if they are installing VDSL units in the exchange areas picked for FTTH in addition to the FTTH rollout?

As far as I've heard there aren't any plans outside areas already listed for eVDSL. For rural POTS only exchamges it doesn't make financial sense to purchase the service unit or encourage coppers continuation.

That is a good question. If we are to go by the map, in my own county, Meath, there are two exchanges listed on the first FTTH phase that also have blue dots indicating that the exchange would receive VDSL. They are Dunderry (DDY1_E01) and Tara (TAA1_E01).

Interestingly there is another small exchange area in between them Robinstown which is in the FTTH phase one but has no blue dot.

From a financial point of view I cannot see a business case for installing a VDSL unit in an exchange that is soon to get FTTH, unless the units are already paid for and cannot be sold.

My local exchange CGL1_E01 (Caragh Lake) .. supposedly a fibre cabinet planned ... we are also on the FTTH blue line (expected Mid/late 2016) .. not seen any work going around close to the exchange though ....

You see, here's the thing - while that might make financial sense, it doesn't make any sense practically or legislate for the NBP.

For example, in my county, there are exchanges being enabled for eFibre where there was never any wired broadband (except dial up) available before. Now, some of these areas have blue lines and covered in their "up to 1000MB 2017-2020 rollout"........but.......there are other areas where the exchange is being enabled for eFibre BUT this is only available in a very small area beside the exchange.

Looking at the map, I can see a couple of villages where the exchange is being enabled but when you link it to the NBP map, the only area that will be covered is the main village itself which would make up around 10% or less of the total population of the area.

So, my question is, what happens to the people in cases like this (i.e. where their local exchange is enabled but they are too far away to avail of Fibre)? Do they have to sit tight and wait to see what the NBP brings or will Eir be able to upgrade these exchanges pretty handy and be able to offer FTTH?

In cases like this, I would imagine that the villages who are only being scheduled for FTTC/Exchange are praying that the Government go with the FTTH option for the NBP or else they will be left behind yet again and we'll back here in a few years time in a different thread talking about more rollouts and yet another NBP.....

Or maybe I've just got the whole thing wrong???

  • Registered Users Posts: 36,166 ✭✭✭✭ED E

The exchange boundaries dont matter, only people within the 30Mb radius of the exchange are excluded from the NBP. If theres a village with 100 homes within 1km and 700 within 8km they'll still do it as it secures them a reasonable number just for them. But if the village only has 40 homes within 1km then they probably won't.

There are many more factors at play but they arent public so we cant fully second guess their decisions.

Same with the Headford exchange near me. When I was doing the updates on the rollout above I was wondering because there seemed to be new E01 cabinets located where the exchanges had gone Fibre Build Commenced for FTTH.

We'll have to wait and see I guess. Although Headford from what I know, whilst it has over 600 lines connected to it, they are all dispersed as there is no settlement near to the exchange with a population density satisfying the requirement for FTTC.

    Today's question, tomorrow's answer.

No Probs Marno;), the exchange is somewhere in Kells, at the moment backhaul from it is via radio.
