Just looking at the M9 on maps. Seems inefficient the way that both the M7 and M9 have a bridge over the Liffey near Newbridge.

Most railways/roads dont split until after the crossing. Anyone up on their history of this?

Has anyone else noticed that the subsidence outside Kilkenny on the northbound lane has returned? Each lane was closed off a few years ago to remedy this at the exact spot where it is occurring again. I hope that this too will be sorted under warranty

Anyone got any idea what they're doing just before the Mullinavat exit (J11) northbound? It looks like they're putting in some sort of camera.

i dont go that far but if it looks like a camera its probably a weather station, one that the NRA use.

I've had a few more chances to look at it over the past few days, and I reckon you're right. There is what looks like a camera at the top, but there are other instruments underneath which can only be temperature and wind gauges.

I think they're re-painting the road markings so makes sense to close the road and complete the work at night.

A Garda checkpoint on a motorway?

That's what was on the M9 yesterday around lunchtime north of Carlow. Chaos. Loads of Garda cars, armed response, one lane coned off, trucks pulled into lay by.

I wonder what that was about?

its done alot, on all the motorways.
its well controlled, well signposted, and they do it to check, tax, insurance, nct, social, potential thieves, the rsa work with them to check road safety of trucks vans and green diesel.

It's not just safety checks. It's also revenue and customs exercises, stopping those driving commercial vehicles to determine if they're also on the dole or those illegally using non taxed tractor (green) diesel.

    Reported in the Indo today.

32 on the spot fines? That was worth the manpower then.

Including two armed response units to control those dangerous vrt-dogers.

Aside from a suspicion that doing this is illegal, it's totally heavy-handed, police-state, and a waste of resources.

Not to mention discommoding all of us who were using the motorway to try to get somewhere in good time by causing a huge tailback - itself dangerous.

Yep pulled in there a few weeks ago, and was amazed at the size of the place, and the amount of places to eat. But I still don't think it's being signposted great. There's so many people I talk to, who don't even know about it. Is there a reason why there's not as much advertising about this on the motorway?

Didn't notice much either but wasn't looking to be fair as I knew about it. Agree lots of places to eat!

There are brown tourist signs on both M9 approaches to the junction but they show the cup of tea, knife and fork, WC etc. Erecting private signs (i.e. AG) on the national road network is not legally permitted.

They could use bwck of lorry in a feild near by loke another company is on the route.

AG have done it at other locations.

They certainly could but a lot of those "lorry signs" have been legally challenged by both local and national authorities as they have no planning permission.

Challenged but ultimately allowed to remain. They don't need planning permission.

Motorway closed northbound just short of J10 (Knocktopher) on account of a crash. Couldn't see much without rubbernecking (was heading for Waterford myself), but both lanes were blocked and the carriageway was at a standstill. Hopefully no injuries or worse.

They said on kilkennypeople.com that it was a tractor and a lorry in the accident.

Wasn't aware of the problems with Kilcullen services, appears Topaz got the contract to run 3 services from TII however AppleGreen and Top has dragged the tender info a long running legal dispute.

Lucky if any building work starts in 2017 at this rate.

Really, taught this was shelved since AppleGreen had once at J7, no way is there room for 3 so close. J5 was Topaz as well.

Agreed. I think Paulstown is least viable of the 3 but of course it's been established first. J5 has the N80 which is an extremely busy road and the halfway point between WD and Dublin on the M9.
Business for all 3 within 55km of each other?? Seems crazy to me anyhow.

One at J5 seems to be the best location seeing as it's also on the N80 and is well placed for a Waterford-Dublin trip.

The one at Kilcullen would want to be opening soon, so too the M6 and M11 ones. Some waste of space and money lying idle for a few years.

I don't think 3 services is viable on the M9 motorway. The traffic volumes are not staggering (similar to the other MIUs actually) and you can do Waterford to Dublin in under an hour and a half. Stopping is not even a necessity. Two strategically placed services are all that's warranted or needed.

Those costs are infuriating. The legal system here is a bloody joke. The only winners here will be the legal profession and as usual the taxpayer will be clobbered. The loosing tenders should be told to do one. Why have a tender process if they can't abide by the outcome.

Apparently the services at Junction 5 will be open next month, I wonder will TII reconsider the Kilcullen services at this stage, surely better for all concerned if they were to pull the plug on it now?

After spending a fortune building the overpass I don't think so but it's crazey to have services at J2,5 & 7, yet nothing near the end especially for those who are coming off N24/25 and don't want to go into Waterford.

AppleGreen would only be delighted to operate J2 and current J7 with Topaz in between.

The section between Kilkenny and Waterford is the quietest part of the M9.

It's a pity they wouldn't open J2 fairly rapidly considering the money spent on the overpass and the overall poor services on the N9 route.

Well actually North to South Kilkenny (J8-9) however 3 services almost on top of one another after you strip out typical commuter traffic and if they can survive, one could further South.

What's with all the traffic cones anyway, think there near Paulstown for a considerable distance on the Dublin side.

3 services within 30 mins of each other is nuts alright. Waterford to Dublin is a 90 min journey...you can comfortably do it without stopping at all, 2 strategically place services on the M9 would be more than sufficient. Paulstown/Carlow are virtually on top of another as they're only 10 mins apart.
A better idea (in my opinion) would have been one between Kilkenny and Waterford and then one at J4 Carlow North/Castledermot or J3.
Granted of course the one at J5 will pick up a lot of N80 traffic as well which is very busy route in itself.

I would say most of the traffic for this site would be from the N80. I live on this route and there is a fairly big volume on it all day long.

Very nasty crash last night between J11 Mullinavat and J10 Knocktopher, near where the motorway passes over the old N9 at Lukeswell.

It looks like a northbound car went over the barrier and landed on its roof on the southbound carriageway, and another northbound car also ended up on its roof on the northbound carriageway.

I reckon I got there about 15-20 minutes after it happened, as there were still emergency vehicles arriving. Ended up sitting there for about half an hour until things got moving again. I saw nothing at all about it on any news sources, except a brief mention on KCLR, so hopefully any injuries were superficial. Looking at it though, I'm very surprised there wasn't loss of life.

Has there ever been talk of an M9 extension from Newbridge to M4 at Kilcock, onwards to M3 at Bracetown and then to M2 at ashbourne and possibly M1 at Blakes cross?

I'm no expert, but surely this would take a lot of pressure off the M50 & N7?

that'd be the DOOR (Dublin outer orbital route) which is not on the cards any time soon.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outer_Orbital_Route

the nearest you have is the N80-N52 corridor which aside from the M9 traffic is actually a great alternative between Portlaoise and Mullingar to avoid the M50 if looking to go from the M7/ M8 to N4 or that north midlands area in general.
(north of Mullingar the road isnt great, but theres works ongoing and planned)
