Update on Daniel Bryan in the Observer:

Bryan wrote, “Can WWE clear me already,” which some believe to be in response to the news that Shinsuke Nakamura was coming. My impression is it’s more an overriding thing of just wanting to wrestle after being off for so long. Bryan has talked about dream matches in his own mind including possible matches with Lesnar and Nakamura. Regarding his situation, what we know is that as of today there are no plans for him to make a secret return at the Rumble or Mania and it’s not like they are holding him off until a certain date. It’s all an issue of being cleared by Dr. Joseph Maroon, who is WWE’s head of medical and that hasn’t happened yet, and then it being okayed by Vince McMahon. While obviously the issues are a lot more complicated, at the end of the day, that’s where it stands today. If Maroon gives the okay, Vince McMahon likely would as well but the idea is that there’s some hidden story that they are either punishing him, or afraid to use him because he’ll get over more than Roman Reigns, right now neither is true. It is unlikely he will be cleared at this point, although the door is not shut on it happening.

But there is no conspiracy theory on this one.

I wouldn't get your hopes up, unfortunately lads.

I hope he never wrestles again for his own sake. Though Id love him to eliminate Brock at the rumble and build up a WM match with him

There's a BS story doing the rounds on Reddit at the minute, that a "HR Insider" in WWE leaked. Basically saying that Bryan will be given his release this coming Monday, 18th January

Obligatory "What's Bryan Daniel doing in the Impact Zone?!" comment

He's a complex man. He wants to keep on doing something where he's almost guaranteed to get an even worse injury next time (changing his style clearly didn't work last go) no matter where he's wrestling. Then you have him writing a pretty depressing last page of his autobiography that makes you feel a bit guilty as a fan. Kinda get the feeling his punishing himself. It's a really sad situation too when fans are probably constantly on to him about hoping he's back soon. Bigger picture needs to be seen from all sides here.

Sure that's WWE named him anyway from Bryan Danielson. So his Impact name is already done for them :)

Could well see him ending up there in the summer of 2018. Real possibility.

If Daniel is left go from the WWE due to his problems wrestling in Japan will only makes things worse.

Yeah but his attitude doesn't seem to be one of caring about whether or not he gets worse now.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,929 ✭✭✭Monokne

Exactly. I don't advocate it, but if he's determined to work, NJPW will probably be his best money option. That combined with ROH.

Perhap Global Force will be on Spike doing 3 million viewers a week by then and they can pay him a million bucks a year. Or perhaps not.

I think his father's passing was still very recent when he wrote that. Grief tends to make you ask what the hell is the point of it all, to the stage where you even see the negatives in the hobbies that you were so passionate about before.

You snap out of it eventually though, like I'm sure Bryan has now. Seeing him say that he still wrestles because it's all he knows doesn't fly with the person I've watched for years.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,929 ✭✭✭Monokne

The book was put together in the second half of 2014, so what he wrote was not a snap judgement. Bryan doesn't strike me as exceptionally emotional, he seems quite grounded and centred. So I can well believe those are still his true feelings. I didn't personally interpret it as a downer, mind you. I suppose it depends on your circumstances in life, but speaking as someone who works part time purely so I can spend more time at home with my family, I can absolutely understand why Bryan regrets missing so much time with his father. At the same time, I wouldn't feel guilty about it as a fan. He's a grown man and he made his own choices.

Apparently Bryan was this week cleared by another non WWE doctor, this time a concussion specialist at UCLA. If that will change anything or not who knows

I think he could even open up his own wrestling school that way he is still doing something wrestling related after he retires from business.

He talked about in his book how much he hated teaching wrestling to people, he didn't think he was very good at it and seemed to get bored by it easily.

It's all down to Vince not the wwe doctor. They need Bryan back really but he could he take there precious roman's spotlight.

Aj styles vs bryan would be epic

It's not about Roman, it's about the string of concussions Bryan has had. He's had what, seven now? That'd be enough to end an NFL players career. It's great that he's still healthy and wants to wrestle, but Vince not wanting to risk turning a lad into a vegetable in the middle of his ring is understandable. Following conservative medical advice is probably not a bad idea. Unless he's 100% sure he's clear, the benefits of pleasing some fans is outweighed by the negative PR that would be associated with a brain damaged employee.

I really struggle to comprehend how there are still people with such an extraordinarily uninformed take on the situation.

WWE is being sued by multiple people claiming they have been negligent toward talent with concussions. They are desperately trying to avoid a huge payout like the $1 billion one that the NFL amongst others was forced to hand out a couple years back.

Meanwhile, they have a talent who by his own admission has suffered more than ten concussions, and their head of medical on public record having said he doesn't think said talent should ever work again.

It's not an exaggeration to say there are potentially tens of millions of dollars on the line in that lawsuit and publicly ignoring their own doctor and putting Bryan back in the ring exposes the company massively.

But of course - OF COURSE - it's all that stinky Vince McMahon protecting Roman Reigns. I read it on the internet. So that must be it.

    SMDH.

Long term health > Short term fix for WWE in bringing Bryan back..

Could you imagine the the absolute hell that would reign down on the company, not to mention their stock dropping quicker than a *(insert own choice of potty mouth language here) IF the company allowed Bryan back and he checked out in the ring, mid match with a live audience WITH KIDS in said audience with their parents, not to mention the audiences watching at home around the world in the different time zones, hell you wouldn't even have to watch the show if you've a Twitter account, said hypothetical situation would be spreading around the world like the click of a finger/hashtag.

It's not about protecting a wrestler.

I for one applaud Vince and the WWE medical staff for holding Bryan back.

Seconded. These guys have to be protected from themselves.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,166 ✭✭✭Stereomaniac

If they were able to have him in the ring making them money they would be doing that by now.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,478 ✭✭✭brianregan09

It'd never be a work now would it ?

  • Registered Users Posts: 908 ✭✭✭Palo Alto

He's not going to "check out in the middle of the ring with kids watching" , any damage he's done or is likely to do won't effect him for quite some time if ever. It's not an acute-type of presentation like a stroke.

I know that, I was being hypothetical, hence the IF in caps lock.

  • Registered Users Posts: 908 ✭✭✭Palo Alto

It seems rather moot to raise a hypothetical that unlikely. He's more chance of being hit by a bus, so it rather undermines your point.

I hope he's not just kept on contract and not wrestling, that'd be the worst of both worlds.
