80,000 pro-lifers turned out to protest that it went too far. The govt didn't hold a referendum because they knew the bill to legalise abortion would be spectacularly annihilated.

That's absolutely crap, and you know it is. The myth of these huge pro life crowds have been well and truly debunked.

Indo says up to 50k, Examiner said up to 40k, but keep making up figures if you want.

Some more bollo*ology here. YD claim 8k turned up to a venue that has a maximum capacity of 5k. I'm sure there's a forum for lies.

(oops cant post links - search Rabble and Humiliating Turnout for YD in Belfast, or just search the venue's specs and YD's claims)

    We are a varied bunch.

However the majority of boards is still made up of male nerds ~15-40 years old.

    Myself included

Why do people keep thinking I'm a man?

No its not. I was there myself. 2 sides of Merrion Sq were absolutely packed on May 3rd last. And I'm getting those figures from the Guards. Of course, do you think RTE showed this? Of course not. But they showed the (probably inflated figure) of the 5000 pro-choicers crowd outside the Dail. Anyway, why are you getting so upset?

Shinners - rarely get above 15% at electoral events. On boards you'd think they were about to sieze power in a coup!
Athiests - 84% of Irish people identify as Catholic. This is a FACT, bourne out in the last census. On Boards, you'd think 84% of people were atheist.
LGBT - Homosexuality, tattoos, piercings etc. seem to be commonplace on Boards. In real life, these things are still well-and-truly in the "weirdo" category. (Maybe not so much the tattoos nowadays, they're seen as more "waster" than "weird" [not MY view, just my observation])
Computer Nerds - Nerds in general, are a rarity in society. They are obviously going to congregate more on the internet than they would in real life, so maybe that is the truest bit of representation on Boards. Still though, they are on the margain of the margains of society offline.

I'll add another stat to that. Views on abortion. On Boards (and in the Irish media in general), you'd think people were about to bring down the government with the overwhelming demand to legalise abortion up to full term. The reality is, when the govt. were enacting the recent legislation, 5,000 pre-choicers turned out to protest that it didn't go far enough. 80,000 pro-lifers turned out to protest that it went too far. The govt didn't hold a referendum because they knew the bill to legalise abortion would be spectacularly annihilated.

Chill FFS! The question asked was "Is boards rep. of Irish Society"? OBVIOUSLY its not! Just because you are not getting the answer you want to hear doesn't mean you have to get upset!

3 exclamation marks from you says otherwise.

Anyhow, you're wrong in your 'facts'. The majority of people do not fit your description. It's kinda laughable how desperately you'd love that to be face, though.

Well is it? Personally I wonder is it at all. The large number of dole threads and threads aimed at poorer section of society can't be Representative of the population. I don't hear conversations like this in real life from people from any section of society. Then again I may be wrong and people might keep their thoughts to themselves on the issue. So I'm wondering are the threads on Boards representative of the feelings of society on all issues or do we make up a small part of society?

If you consider all the Irish boards available, sports, politics, art, message boards, local community, etc

And possibly e-mail groups, meet up groups, you are talking about an ever imcreasing web.

The list is endless,I assume the guy who reffered to the Sunday Indo is joking or s stirring.

I'm actually a right wing Nazi in many ways, so that balances out some of the pinko Bolsheviks about the place.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

A lot of dangerous pro abortion liberals seem to populate boards also.

    Frightening if that represents Ireland!

Even ignoring the totally bizarre assertion that any of the above are in the weirdo category, how is homosexuality in any way similar to tattoos or piercings that it could be lumped in with them in the same sweeping statement?

Why would it be representative of Irish society no more than anything is reprehensive of Irish society, Irish society is diverse like any society is.

Afterhours does seem to attract a lot of people with an axe to grind about a diverse range of subject, but I would not totally dismiss it as reprehensive of broad general opinions on important topics in Irish society.

Are they dangerous because they're pro-abortion? Or because they're liberal? Or do they specifically have to be both to be dangerous? And in what way are they dangerous? Do they go around in mobs with flaming torches or something?

I could be totally wrong here, but I seem to recall the pro-life groups get the money from somewhere to provide an absolute ton of free buses to ship people up to Dublin for those. A huge amount of fierce professional looking posters and whatnot too.

That being said, I've no doubt that if it went to a referendum right now that I'd be a bit embarrassed by the amount of people opposed to it. Unsure which way it'd swing, mind.

Everyone's forgetting the pro-Brit faction who congregate here. I can honestly say I've never met anyone in Ireland who is pro-British or ever boasted about been ex-British soldiers. They even moderate here...bizarre

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,565 ✭✭✭losthorizon

Its definitely not. Its mainly right wing, under 30s as far as I can see.

Ironically the football forum is populated by by people who dont go to Football games. I reckon AH is populated by students who have never paid taxes or worked (nothing wrong with that of course - its just not representative).

But all forums on here are mainly male.

I referred to the Sindo. I'm not shít stirring. The Sunday Independent is the largest selling paper in the country because it represents the viewpoints of a whole swathe of the population who really don't bother getting into endless debates with some dweeb on a message board. Mark and Mary Middleclass have better things to be doing than dancing on the head of a pin about complex social and politicial issues with some student who recently discovered the works of Marx, and who now thinks he has all the answers to all the questions.
