Grea seats in them too. Those alloys mus be standard on them, a friend of mine has them and I always thought that the were aftermarket.

another thing about them is the good Ncap rating, 4 Stars!

People forget about this when buying a cheap car, all grand till you get T-Boned by a SCANIA!

    Front suspension/setup looks iffy

This seems to be the same car posted twice. One in Dublin and the other in WestMeath. What's the thinking behind this?

Some of it is in Dublin, some in Westmeath.

Bulletproof motoring for under 1k. Really handy car to have with that liftback too.

would this have any life left at this mileage?

looks local to me, i might go and turn up with 600 if i thought it would last.

If it's gotten oil changes frequently there could be loads of use left in her.

Got to disagree. If thats a genuine FBMWSH then it could be good money.
Overheating can be quickly diagnosed so can make for a huge bargaining tool.
Once there is no sign of serious engine damage from being driven in the red for long.

They're not as bullet proof as you'd think. it 1.3 is the bulletproof one.

Well I have the saloon version with the same engine. Apart from much over hyped oil burning issues with some engines they are a solid car. Or is there something (very possible) else that I don't know about it?

My old man ran a 4e-fe (dizzy starlet I gave him) almost bone dry for God knows how long, fill her up and she's tickedyboo. They're a very resilient engine.

Nope, but the amount of oil they burn is enough to crack anyone. More that the Golf of the same era that people hate so much.

I believe the Golf was much worse with the problems not just related to oil burning, while Toyota replaced engines with the oil burning problem under a special warranty extension or if it was under a certain amount of miles once the issue was confirmed. It is also a problem that becomes apparent around the 80-100k miles mark or earlier, so any of them over that should either have the problem and be manageable or just not have it at all.

I think I've read up too much on it because I own one :pac:

A 00 Golf is a ten times nicer place to be than a 00 Corrolla.

if you buy a Golf without electric windows, you won't have much more hassle than any other Corolla.

Never said anything about how nice a place it was to be, Corolla is fine for me.

I'll quote a few on this forum regarding the 1.4 golf.

A mk4 golf had vaguely interesting headlights and blue lit dials when it came out...aside from that was as dull as cars come, especially in basic paddy spec and was pretty widely renowned as the low point in the golfs history.

The 1.4 Golf has a reputation for being "soft" i.e. giving trouble after 100,000 miles for no apparent reason. Plus the gearboxes can give trouble on them as well. The 1.6 16 valve is just a larger version of the 1.4 so suffers from all the same issues. Not many of them around (thankfully)....

...If you want a reliable 1.4 then your options are either the Focus or the Corolla, both are bulletproof, the Corolla is mind-numbingly boring but is well able to move given its engine size (since it has 97 bhp)...
    billbond4 wrote: »
Keep away from 1.4 golf, i.e. besides drinking oil etc.
I had lots of silly things break in it,
like the rear seat latch broke,
    glovebox latch broke,
    door sensor for lights broke,
    Coolant Temp Sensor broke...
And the worst is its really underpowered, its really slow to pull off from dead stop
Save yourself the hassle and get something else. !!

So for me (not just based on above) 00 Corolla 1.4 > 00 Golf 1.4.

Here's another lovely example of a 00 Corolla that's been kept excellently well to keep it on topic.

Furry smurf - but the original point was about the 1.4 v the 1.3 and bomproofability.

The 4e-fe is the winner by a long shot and can do over 40mpg.

Yes, true. I was addressing the golf and oil burning points as he mentioned them. What's "furry smurf"?

I recently bought a 99 1.3 corolla with 120000 miles, I put a new clutch into it and gave it a service, I have done over 1000 miles in it since and the oil is a clean as the day I poured it in and last week I got 200 miles out of €30 of petrol, dont know how many mpg's that is ? Its comfortable and reliable and boring but what do you want for €900 with 3 months tax and four months nct ?
    Proper bangernomics ?

You spent €900 knowing you had to do the clutch and service it? Not that cheap in my book. But indeed, you got yourself just about the most reliable bangernomics car you can get :)

Volvo S40 T4 with a years test, taxed til June, leather etc (and a suspicious looking pair of gloves in the back :) )

    €1,250

Windey windows in the back, thought a t4 was a high spec

With the black leather gloves and the message "Call me 12-midnight." in his ad, I'd bring a few heavies with me going to see that! :pac:

Lot's of that €900 is for the reliability reputation, it doesn't seem great value considering the clutch was needed to be done.

In fairness I suppose the tax covered your clutch :)
