Just out of interest Laoisman, why are Mayo below Kerry, is it the loss to Galway?

Because that's just the way life is Bartlett.

Just as we will always be above the inferior Rossie, Kerry will always be ahead of us :)

Interesting stats, we are led to believe that Ulster is the hardest provincial title to win, but with 4 teams in the top 9 would it not point towards Munster?
Connaught and Leinster, well the less we say about that the better!!!

There's something in that, but again you could pick a different arbitrary number and say there's 6 Ulster teams in the top 15 making it the strongest in terms of strength in depth.

Tipp and Clare's emergence has certainly spiced up Munster though and Cork would really want to mind themselves if they don't want to be pushed aside by Tipp in the long run.

I still think that most of the top 5 ulster teams would beat Clare in a given day so I wouldn't be OTT about their high placement.

It could be argued that for the majority of counties involved, Leinster is the hardest title to win in both codes ;).

Any argument of "the hardest province" is always very selective and arbitrary. Like for over 10 years Tyrone and Armagh swapped the Ulster title between them but people still went on about how anyone could win it, citing draws and qualifiers and all sorts .

This year was unusually poor for Ulster teams by the usual standard. Between the 9 counties, they only amassed 6 wins between them outside of the Ulster Championship (Derry vs Louth, Meath and Cavan. Fermanagh vs Wexford. Cavan vs Carlow, and Donegal vs Cork).

NFL 2017 is just around the corner, so I had a go at ranking teams in each division based on their rating points. This has been previously shown to give some indication of whether a team will finish in relegation/promotion territory.

    2017 NFL
    Div 1| Rating| Div 2| Rating| Div 3| Rating| Div 4| Rating
    Dublin | 111 | Clare | 91| Tipperary | 92| Westmeath | 84
    Kerry | 103 | Galway | 89 | Longford | 80| Wexford | 72
    Mayo | 103 | Cork | 88| Laois | 78| Limerick | 71
    Tyrone | 97 | Derry| 85 | Offaly | 77| Carlow | 64
    Donegal | 96| Kildare | 84 | Sligo | 75| Leitrim | 63
    Monaghan | 84| Fermanagh| 84| Armagh | 74 | Wicklow | 59
    Roscommon | 83 | Meath | 82| Louth | 73 | London | 58
    Cavan| 83 | Down | 73|Antrim | 68 | Waterford | 57

Tipperary are the obvious outliers here, with Westmeath not far behind. Can they turn last year's championship form into a promotion bid?

Previous year's finishes: tables are sorted by ranking position prior to start of the league, colour indicate top 2 finish (green) or bottom 2 finish (red)

Last year, I had remarked on the high number of Leinster teams in the red compared to other provinces, but that seems to be correcting itself. What is more remarkable, is that over the last 5 seasons, Connacht teams appear to be quite happy in their respective divisions, with the exception of Roscommon.

    Finishes per province (2013-2016 combined)

    Province| Top 2 | Bottom 2
    Leinster | 10 | 17
    Ulster | 13 | 9
    Connacht | 2 | 3*
    Munster | 7 | 2
*Connacht's 3 bottom 2 finishes are London finishing last in Div 4.

The ranking tables are back! Just when you thought that you had enough to worry about, you can now pile on the agony as you watch your team drop through the rankings and become the laughing stock of the country….…...or is that just me???

Highlights from Round 1 of the NFL:
    • Louth are the big winners, gaining 3.44 rating points and jumping 5 places following a big win in Portlaoise
    • Laois, on the otherhand, drop 4 places
    • All other changes were minimal enough with no team moving more than 2 places except for Waterford who gain 3 places
    • Down dropped to their lowest ranking since June 2002 after their home loss to Fermanagh
    • (Some eagle-eyed observers might notice a minor difference in rating points (generally around 0.02 or 0.03) which I can only assume is due to rounding errors)

    Roscommon didn't get any points?

They went up because Westmeath went down for drawinf with Carlow.

Clare actually lose points for drawing with Derry in Derry, interesting times we live in!

I thought when I looked at it yesterday they had .25 or something extra and assumed it was from recalculated numbers. Looked at it wrong but was only joking anyway.

Plenty of minor upsets the weekend gone by to keep the table moving:
    • Sligo gained the most rating points (3) and climbed 2 places in the rankings with an excellent away win over Tipperary
    • Others to gain rating points with good away wins were London (2.75), Meath (2.67), Mayo (2.22) and Galway (2.20)
    • Clare moved to 6th, their highest ever ranking, primarily due to Tipperary dropping 2 places
    • Wicklow hit their lowest ever ranking and now sit forlornly at the bottom of the table
    • Armagh slip back to 1975 levels after losing at home to Laois

Nothing between Mayo and Kerry now in points and that reflects reality too. I'd say in a championship semi final there'd be nothing more than a point or two between them.

Round 3 of the NFL threw up another slew of shocks (as the results of our guesses in the NFL pools thread will surely show!). The big winners this week were:
    • Monaghan, who gained 3 rating points with a hard fought win in Killarney, and who move up 2 places into the top (super?) 8.
    • Armagh, gaining 2.42 rating points and jumping 3 places in the table
    • Louth are also worth a mention here; while they gained another 1.67 rating points this weekend, their net balance since the start of the league is +6.75.

    • A few more shocks the weekend gone by, and none moreso than Down's big win away to Derry, the result of which means 4.22 rating points are exchanged between the sides. Down move up 5 ranking places and Derry drop 5
    • Meath also fared well from their win over Galway, gaining 2.45 rating points and climbing 3 places in the rankings
    • Other big movers were Clare (up 3 places) and Laois (down 3 places)

Please note that the changes below take into account last weekend's Round 5 games plus the 2 rescheduled games played on the weekend previous.

    In summary:
    • Armagh were the big winners this weekend, gaining 3.12 rating points and jumping 3 places after a big win in Drogheda
    • Cavan also did well, gaining 3 rating points following their victory in Castlebar
    • Clare dropped 4 places after their loss to Fermanagh and lost 2.20 rating points
    • Cork drop to 12th after their draw with Meath, their lowest rank since February 2005
    • Donegal bump Tyrone out of the top 4 for the first time since August 2015

When is the last time Laois were that low? Bit strange to see division 3 Tipperary in 6th ahead of all the division 2 teams.

    And Monaghan from Division 1.

    And Monaghan from Division 1.

Monaghans early exit in 2016 and Tipps SF appearance would have a lot to do with it.

Hi Laoisman - loving the work as always and look forward to the updates!!

Can I query - we lost points after our victory over Louth whilst they gained points? Just seems a wee bit strange.

Good spot, and my fault.....scores given on Hoganstand are nearly always given as winner vs loser, and not home team against away team, and I sometimes fall into the trap! Table updated......

    • Order has been restored to the top 3 after last weekend's results, due to Mayo's win in Omagh and the stalemates in Cavan and Ballyshannon
    • The big winner though was Louth, who gain 3 rating points and jump 3 places after beating Tipperary in Thurles; Tipp drop 3 places as a result
    • The other notable winner was Offaly, achieving 2.02 rating points for their away win over Sligo
    • Derry are now at their lowest ranking since February 2013

How many points would Cavan have gained if they had beaten Kerry?
