SAORVIEW RE-SCAN OCT 21ST 2013

Due to technical enhancements to the SAORVIEW service, as part of the ongoing process of expanding the platform, viewers are required to carry out a rescan of their SAORVIEW television or set-top box from Monday 21st October. Failure to re-scan will result in eventual loss of service.

Re-tuning is simple, go to the menu on your tv or set top box and find the option to re-tune, scan or search for channels.

Guide to Re-Scanning SAORVIEW APPROVED Equipment.

I presume your "clover" receiving aerial pattern was 2 x 2 aerials arranged as a vertical square or rectangle, like the receiving array on the relay transmitter here or maybe it was a cross shape?

Ours were never that far apart and they were wisi, each aerial perhaps three times the size of those, we then had four more behind those but slightly further apart.
That is how they worked best and succeeded in pulling it in from Wales. Good quality for most of the time.
Of course we had diplexers and duplexers and quad plexers etc in their little aluminium pods.

8 aerials altogether. A fair bit of fiddling to get all signals adding in-phase, I would think.

Took a lot, it was trial and error but it worked and worked well....most of the time. There was no net to consult then, just hard graft and huge aerials.
So time and energy consuming and frustrating that I go near an aerial now only when I have to even though there is no skill or trial and error required now.
Same with building computers, all plug and play now ,not like the time of windows 3.1 when It could take hours just to get a modem recognised,

No skill? The internet won't set up the aerial for you. You can arm yourself with all the information you want but the results depend on your own real-life implementation. Does that not count as skill?

And how can you completely eliminate trial & error?

Nothing at all has changed in the actual setting up of the hardware, apart from the easier availability of half-decent signal measuring devices. (Though for analogue signals, the TV set itself was probably as good as anything.)

And as for pre-internet days: surely someone in your Wisi-rigging group had gained a bit of technical knowledge of the subject & knew that the object was to get the contributions from each aerial to add rather than cancel each other. You wouldn't head into something like that with no idea at all of how the best possible TV picture would be received.

I assembled, built programmed computers for yonks and it was hard work getting those modems to work on windows 3.1, 3.11 and to a lesser extent windows 95. A lot of times you had to resort to dos to communicate with the modem. Ghost was a good addition for duplicating hard drives when building several computers.

You will have a computer up and running in an hour or so now.

None of us had any great experience at pulling in signals. We read a bit and tried a bit and read a bit more. We did not have signal finders just relied on the portable telly to see when we had a signal.
I am sure that we pulled in signals from caradon hill, that I think is in Cornwall.
We really kept going adding aerials and removing aerials and pulling them further apart and pushing them closer together. We also made a few large mesh dishes.
It was something new at the time and it was fun while it lasted.

It's no easier or harder to rig an aerial now than it ever was, given some knowledge of radio communications.

Even a mobile phone will tell you exactly where Caradon Hill is now and even point you in the right direction.
If we went up a different hill we would have to do it at the same time of day as we were up the other hill because we were using the sun to get our bearings, not to mention a cloudy day:cool:

Actually we did have one compass between us. It was very unsteady but one of the guys did a lot of sailing and he had a sextant so if we went up a different hill we had to do it at midday. We soon got tired of that but there was only a couple of viable hills so we had a good idea of the direction for those as in if you stand behind the rock with the arrow on it and line it up with the fir tree that was hit by lightening you were well on your way.
I enjoyed the fun, others were fanatics and the rest were just out for some fresh air. There were twelve to fourteen of us in all depending on the weather

Just sticking your head & shoulders through the attic door might have got things working too, by affecting the reflected signals in the attic. You would have to stay standing there though, to keep it working.

Test channel 15 now showing a caption saying this instance of this service is closing please rescan your saorview receiver to continue to view. Also they seem to be playing around with the test card. It was showing colour bars a few minutes ago but is now back on a philips test card.

Channel 15 is a circle test card with a part os the Saorview logo on the bottom left of the screen. Rnag is on the soundtrack.

LCN 15 is a hidden channel so they may be testing the shutdown message for the duplicate/simulcast channels 11, 17 and 18 there first.

Last week, I did a full digital & analogue re-tune on my Dad's Samsung Unapproved Saorview TV and it found 20 digital and 1 analogue - S40 (letter S, Forty) from Three Rock

Any ideas?

S40 would be a hyperband cable TV channel: vision carrier 455.25 mHz, audio on 460.75.

In the national radio frequency plan that part of the spectrum is allocated to Land mobile: PMR UHF Band.

We were referring to the 1 analogue channel on Ch.S40, what's on it - audio or video?

Edit: I wonder if the "analogue channel" is actually a clear digital channel on that frequency, with the others encrypted?

There was just fuss/white noise on the channel itself

The Gardai had duplex repeaters on either 450 or 455 MHz in 25 Khz steps. It just possible this is still on with just noise now.

Anyone know if when all the work associated with the RTE1 HD launch his done if all the Soarview output will be on the one Mux or will they still have Mux 1 and Mux 2?

I'm asking as based in Derry and picking up Moville signal and I am picking up the 2 mux's. This means that on my box RTE2hd is channel 801 while RTE1Hd is up around 816. There are numerous channels in between and after so it looks like my box is listing mux1 channels and then mux 2 channels. Don't mind the fact that the channel numbers are in the 800's, but it would be good to have rte1hd and rte2hd beside each other, just the way rte1sd was beside rte2hd previously when there was one mux.

There won't be a return to only 1 mux. The extra bandwidth is needed to allow more HD services.

If your receiver won't order the channels correctly or allow you to edit the channel list, you will just have to put up with things the way they are. (Or get a more accommodating receiver.)

Which are the 'numerous channels in between' RTE2 & RTE1?
