OK, I was thinking it might give you the genuine mileage of the car as it is plugged in the system.

Anything would be cheaper than running this focus anyway. Although we've never had any hassle with any of the other diesels and my parents have had a lot. I'm actually dreading the doe tomorrow and what kind of a list they could hand me tomorrow I can think of about 10 things they could pull it up on so I'll see how strict the new rules are tomorrow. At this stage theres no point in worrying about it until I see the result tomorrow. It really makes the 54mpg just not worth it.

If you want a Mazda 3 or 6 I think you would be better of going with a petrol one because I wouldn't touch any of the diesel version there offered in even with a warranty. I try to stay positive but everywhere you look someone is having issues with a 1.6hdi engine. Anyway it will be interesting to see what the tester makes of it tomorrow. Anyway if I was buying a diesel tomorrow it would be a 1.7cdti Opel any 1.9,1.6,2.0 tdi vag stuff or a 1.4 d4d Toyota. I can't really think of any others I'd have confidence I'm talking about newer diesel stuff though.

No, the milage on the cert is what the tester wrote down!
Ive had the wrong milage (and I mean proper wrong) on 2 nct certs.

It doesn't get plugged into any sort of system. Everything is as close to manual as can be.

Tester writes down numbers, engine temp is checked with an IR gun, the only thing computer related is measuring revs in emissions/smoke tests.

Found a decent van in Kerry.:)
Collected it yesterday.

I saved a good bit by buying privately so paid the €300 for the aa vehicle
inspection and have to say he really was very thorough, l think it was worth it.

I thought this was interesting, while looking at the NCT site I came across stats which say the item which people fail most on during an NCT test was front suspension, I think its about time we get rid of speed bumps.

Which engine is the best to go for in a Panda? 1.1, or 1.2? Talking about 04/05 gen cars. And is there anything else I should look out for?

Thinking of changing the motor to something more exciting.

Any reason to avoid the 1.1? The 1.2 is the same that was in the Punto for years, which I presume is prone to headgasket failure, which really means that there's something funky with the cooling on them? I don't know if I'm right in saying that just have it in my head for some reason.

I think HGF is most likely down to poor maintenance on them. They aren't difficult or hard to repair as I understand it. The 1.1 is best avoided as it's simply to underpowered for the car. They're a funny thing to drive. The love to be chucked around the place and revved hard so they feel far more exciting than they are. Lots of space and comfortable too. Easy to drive and generally reliable.

Just to emphasise a point, the cooling system must be strictly maintained. Thermostat change is a must, coolant change with Paraflu blue every 2 years, make sure the fan works when it should, no air pockets in the system.

Too many people complain of hg failure and when asked these simple q's they either go silent or get pissy. Laziness and/or lack of education most of the time

As for the power difference, there's only 5bhp between the 2. But then again I've not driven either so I don't know how they compare.

Apart from the engines in these, is there anything else I should keep in mind if I go to look at any?

1.1 won't be overly happy in the Panda body, best go for the 1.2 same engine block only bored out .9 of a mm and stroked about 7mm (yeah I've spent too much of my time with these engines.....)

Clean the tb regurarly, keep the sensors around it clean and dirt free. Timing belt breaks it's freewheeling so no piston to valve abuse :pac:

A friend had one and the only issue he ever mentioned was ECU problems that seemed to cause a misfire. I don't recall it ever being a massive issue or him ever getting to the bottom of it.

For what you pay I think they're great value.

I agree. They're a fantastic car to sit in for the money. Quite a high seating position makes them good around town. Just looking for something cheap, reliable and frugal for around town. And the Panda was what my mate suggested, and I thought it was bang on to be honest. A Clio could be a decent shout, but I'd be wary of the french car in this instance.
