Actually, the obvious glaring weakness that hasn't been replaced in anyway there is Torres's goals.

Lucas and this season, Adam have filled in, though as you say, Alonso is irreplaceable.

The team aren't playing badly, creating chances, that isn't in dispute by anybody, or well, I hope so?

I suppose it's either a 4-5-1 type formation, but Suarez doesn't suit that, it's grand against United or City at home or playing Away or the 4-4-2 with Suarez and Carroll.

I'd have more confidence in a 4-4-2 with Suarez and Kuyt up front but the RM is weak, unless you go Downing right and Bellamy/Maxi left.

It seemed a lot like 4-1-4-1 today! Formations are actually starting to become a bit outdated. There maybe a standard basis as to how you defend, but i think football these days is becoming more and more fluid.

For example, does anyone have an opinion on the exact position Jordan Henderson played today?

You have a point. I think with Suarez, forget 4-4-2, it's a 4-4-1-1, but Kuyt or Carroll should be the striker, otherwise it's a bit of a waste.

I do agree yep, sometimes I can't see any formations depending on the type of play. Under pressure, formations go out the window, it's as many back as possible. That's were a Lucas type player come in handy. He gets the ball, simple pass or keeps possession, giving the team a chance to get numbers forward.

I suppose the point is, there'll be periods of play formation isn't obvious or adhered to, then you see managers giving instructions!

The reason being he is getting absolutely no service.
I read a stat yesterday, could have been on the BBC website, that he has touched the ball on avg 24 times a game. The least amount by any player.

I think the general understanding of "formations" has always been more for the spectator's benefit than the players/coaches/teams. As you say, it's a basic starting point for each player, but beyond that football is too fluid for them to be set in stone during a game.

Messi and Ronaldo would struggle with McLeish as thier manager. He is awful. This is a manager who is making exciting players like N'zogbia and Agbonlahor look boring. A manager who plays Heskey. Enough said really.

Bent is a good player and would score goals with any team. But he would prosper in an attacking team like Liverpool. He wouldn't be my number one suggestion for a buy but don't blame him for Aston Villa's current perdicament.

While I see the logic in what you are saying, if Liverpool were to buy another striker in January and keep Carroll, then the potential is there for Carroll to get even less game time if the new player starts scoring, and there would be even less chance of Carroll coming good and an even greater chance of him losing more value.

I think that it may come down to which way the owners think will lose them the least money on Carroll.

If they bought another striker, they would have a total of 4 natural strikers. Don't forget that Bellamy is 32 aswell.

There is no harm in having 4 strikers. What if saurez broke down tomorrow the way Lucas has? Besides, Liverpool are supposed to be on the up. If you are in 4 competitions you need to have a squad to deal with it.

Buying Carroll may have been a misstep, but selling him so soon would be a bigger one.

Kuyt is 31 and on the downgrade as well. I think a case can be made for a striker.

I think its pretty obvious we need another striker. But who though? There arent many available at the minute.

Llorente and Cavani are the two that spring to mind for me, but both would cost over 30 million.

A suarez + cavani partnership would be :pac::pac::pac::pac::pac:

Forget the money. Players of that reputation would have their pick of suitors if they wanted a move. Untill Liverpool get champions league football again, these type of players are non runners. And it looks like it will be spurs, not liverpool who might break the top4 this year. Better off plucking a talent from weaker clubs with the lure of premier league football and players who will buy into a rebuilding project.

I think he would flourish in this Liverpool side too it's obvious that Bellamy and Kuyt are more wide forwards than out and out strikers

In the medium term, Kuyt and Bellamy need to be replaced.

I don't see us buying an established striker, because we have spent over 50m in that position already, and need to spend big money on a CM and a winger.

We saw in the summer how close we were to signing Wickham from Ipswich, and I think that is the kind of signing we will go for.
Bent would be a bad signing given his age and the price he would cost.

Although I think Kuyt has gone a little backwards this season, we still have enough quality up front in Suarez, Carroll, Dirk and Bellamy. This enables us to do what Man United have done so successfully over the last 5 years - buy real quality young players and give them a couple of years to bed into the squad.

I think we're kidding ourselves if we're expecting big money to be spent on a centre-forward. I could be wrong though.

they have to be the priorities. we're pretty stacked in every other position, bar CF, where the owners have just spent £57m last January. they won't want to spend more there without giving Andy Carroll a longer crack of the whip.

As said, the owners didnt pay 50 mil for Suaez and Carroll.....thats was funded by the Torres sale

They bought the club, of which Torres was an asset. Selling selling Torres was selling their asset, and so the Suarez and Carroll purchases were funded by the sale of their asset

It was good to get the three points yesterday but we are still a far cry away from where we want to be. We should have by three or four yesterday.

Positives:
- We looked solid defensively, the Agger and Skrtel partnership is working really well. Agger is a top class defender IF he can stay fit.

- We controlled the game well and QPR's midfield was non existent. Adam and Henderson looked very composed in the centre.

- Downing played very well and seems to do most of his best work on the right wing.

- Kuyt and Suarez worked hard up top which didn't give QPR time on the ball.

Negatives
- We were very poor in the first half.

- We need a winger of the ilk of Nani or Mata who provides a constant threat from the wings. We really lack a spark of creativity from the wings.

- We need a finisher. Carroll might do the job if he was giving a decent run of games. Suarez's shooting lets him down alot, and he can be very selfish with ball at times when he should be passing the ball across the goal instead of shooting from ridiculous angles.

- We didn't create enough clear cut chances considering the amount of possession we had.

Two quality wingers, a back up midfielder and maybe a striker needed in January.

Out of all the years I have been watching the league I can't remember a season were the quality of goal keeping against us has been better.

In some games it has been us against keeper .
Games that spring to mind was against Vorm , de Gea , Hart ,Fulham and yesterday against QPR.

There have been some WC saves pulled off against us .
That along with the amount of times we have hit the woodwork pans out to be a pretty unlucky return in goals seen to date .

I still think someone is gonna be on the receiving end of a hiding from us when our luck changes .

The case for a new striker is very strong. But we dont just want to buy in haste (ala Carroll) , I would imagine Comoli has been eyeing up some candidates for the past couple of months. I guess its up to him and Kenny to make that case to the owners, if indeed they do want a new CF
